Rotherham away in 1984. United needing the points near the end of the season for our promotion push. Bob Atkins pops up with a last minute winner. Mental scenes on the away end and on the 69 bus home (I was only 14). Fucking brill

Mental scenes on the home end as well, and down both sides

My Dad went to the first replay at the City Ground, but missed the other 2 games due to work commitments I think.

He said that the feeling at the time was that despite the double not having been done since the 19th Century United and Leicester were really just engaged in a playoff to decide who would lose to Tottenham in the final.

Fun fact: There have been 8 FA Cup semi finals that have gone to 3 or more games. United have been involved in 4 of those ties (1899 v Liverpool, 1902 v Derby, 1928 v Huddersfield, 1961 v Leicester). We won the first 2 ties and lost the last 2 ties.
Thanks - enjoyed reading that. I differed from your dad in 2 respects, both because I was only 13 at the time. I missed the replays because of school (my brother was in 6th form, and he went to both replays - serves him right, I got better A-levels than him); and as a naive kid, I thought we had a chance against Spurs, because we'd beaten them 3-0 three years earlier away in the 4th round.

It was November 1991, the Saturday after we beat Wendy 2-0. The away end reverberated to the sound of "We beat the Wednesday 2-0" to the tune of 'Blue Moon'.

I remember that, although in my version we were singing 'we beat the Scum 2-0'. Seem to recall our goal was a scuffed Deane effort.

I was too young for Darlington, and Leicester to attend. But MK away was something else. The party atmosphere. The 100 or so Blades in the home end. The half time party.

The party in the villages after, walking the streets and all you could here were echo's of Blades songs being sung down every street.

Singing Jack O'Connell in the curry house that night.

Truly, truly magical day out.

I think Darlington and Leicester should be taken out of the equation really. They are in Blades folklore and can never be surpassed.
Even if we got promoted this season I can’t ever see that many people being allowed to travel to Stoke in May.

Darlington could never be repeated in today's stadiums. We had the whole of the ground, I saw 5 Darlington fans that day.

Owls 1 Blades 3

what made it special - and it wasn't the football result, although the result was great - it was sat in Wednesdays North stand and being able to see just masses and masses of yellow balloons as we came out. It wasn't just one section - it was the whole area. From memory, didn't the club purchase boxes and boxes and dish them out to fans?

Magnifique and that single memory lives long :)

Any older blades on here go to this? Looks a reyt match.

My late dad was there. I was in the TV room at my boarding school, my heart sank when someone told me that we were losing 2-0 at half time and I believed that our Euro dream was over. During the 2nd half I got updates from a Blackpool fan who was listening to the latest scores from his transistor radio while we were watching wrestling on ITV. I went berserk when I was told that we got the winner! A Derby fan was pleased as Everton were challenging for the title

Appears my memory playing tricks .. hope I remember the next few highlights under CW reign at least ;)

All the previously mentioned , 3-1 at Hillsboro , 4-0 at Peterboro, play off semi v Forest , Darlington , Leicester 5-2 , and a couple more I remember fondly , West Ham in the cup 2-1 when Phil Cliff scored , and the 5-1 win over Cardiff that virtually clinched promotion, all happy memories!

Remember that game very well! it was under Furphy , & we were challenging for Europe for the first & only time, missed out in the last game at Birmingham where we needed to win but drew 0-0.

There have been so many classic away games to mention but my top 5 are:
1 Darlington away. Won 2-0
2 Leicester away won 5-2. What a day!!.
3 piggies away won 3-1. Yellow balloon fest.
4 Peterborough away won 4-0.
5 Ipswich away playoff semi final. 1-1??.
I also remember going to Newcastle for a league cup game and we lost 0-2 but didn’t matter as we won the home leg 3-0. They scored both goals in the first half??. That was the longest 45 mins of my life!!!.

peterboro away, parked in a car park, with blades whod travelled down in an ice cream van, playing the musical chime and eating ice creams, laughed me socks off

anyone remember oldham away when we were one down after a minute i recall, and that was the last kick they had as we battered them 5-1. then the old bill made us walk thriugh an absolute bog to get out the stadium

yep, was there for that one in Rotherhams "old" main stand - stood in the front bit.

really hot day - 2nd half, kicking towards the railway end where all the Blades were - Bob Atkins, about 12-14 yards out, took a ball on the chest with back to goal, swivelled right, turned 180 degrees and just leathered it with his left foot. Must have been the best timed shot Bob Atkins ever did - Me and the lad I went with just went bonkers - didn't really matter we were in the "home" terrace as it was full of Blades.

Remember it well. I had my mullet cut off the day before. The things you remember eh?

Also remember us singing every blades players names when ever they touched the ball. Arnott ran the show in what I always thought was his best game in a blades shirt.

I always loved that open away end without a roof. Don't know why.

I know it was a mid-season game but I enjoyed Bury away. The year ched got done and missed the last few games.

I remember walking up to the ground and the programme seller said buy your program show your support, even though we are out numbered.

I thought it was a joke but when I got in we had taken 3 sides of the ground. Plus a good victory too. 3-1 I think.

Southend away in Div 4 ,last minute Kevin Arnott winner ,virtually securing promotion ,Heffernan going bonkers and a top weekend in London to follow.

My major memories of the Ipswich playoff game, cribbed from a post I made 7 years ago(!)

- The build up to the game inside the ground was like an Ipswich victory party. I didn't know any Blades fan who thought we had any chance at all. We only sold half our tickets and Ipswich had us in 2 different sections of one of their stands, at each end with their fans in between.

- the hush that descended when Kachouro gave us the lead. It was not in the script. There was even a bit of a pause from the Blades fans as the ball bounced down and came out, but I was sitting in line with the goal, and there was no doubt it was in.

- time stopping when Sedgeley hit the post with the free kick in stoppage time. Luckily, the ball fell to Whitehouse and as he brought it clear the full time whistle went...

- Kelly limping around with great courage

- a United player getting booked every 30 seconds or so in extra time

- Blades fans banging on seats and on the back of the stand as the end of extra time approached.

- the euphoria of victory (well, sort of victory) over a team I despised at the time.

- got on the train back to London surrounded by disgruntled Ipswich fans. Some drunken local girls got on, and one of them started to make fun of their defeat. Without a word, two of them picked her up and threw her out through the open door (I hasten to add the train wasn't moving). After that, I don't think I looked up from my programme until we got to Stratford...

Colin Morris came off the bench & had a blinder , I think he scored 3?
