Hasn't Wilder said that the Striker we're after will only come to us once his club have got a replacement in. Southampton can no longer make any signings so you've got to assume we're not in for Gallagher?

Wasn’t the actual wording more that it depends on other business with the club involved? Southampton are still able to sell players outside the UK for the rest of the month – it might be if they are trying to do so that Gallagher then would actually be brought back into their squad. Equally they might be first seeing if anyone abroad wants to buy Gallagher outright before committing to a loan deal with no permanent fee arranged.

Not sure.

The Sky report on Norwood being 'shocked' at the move because he never realised it was perm in Jan...

I think he's seen it as Blades paying 10k of his 30k wages for the loan period... when in fact when it's made perm, it's 10k for duration of deal.
That's why he was panicking.

That's why who was panicking?

Joao continues to be mysteriously unavailable for Wednesday.

The latest Star article mentioned that we had revived our interest in Hogan.

if gallacher is a target man is that money wasted because we already got the undroppable Clarke & mcgoldrick as a targetman

Wasn’t your comment when Woodburn signs “Great. Now sign Gallagher”, at a time we hadn’t had any strong links with him?

Now some supposed in-the-knows are linking us with Gallagher, it’s “rather have Joao”. Are you deliberately shifting the bar of what you will judge to be a successful transfer window for us?

We've been strongly linked with Gallagher all summer.

We are now in a situation where we'll only be able to loan one striker, yet we still need pace AND height. Joao has both, Gallagher not so much.

I haven't suggested Gallagher instead of Joao would make it an unsuccessful window.

We could sign either of them and I wouldn't consider it a success if they weren't to be made permanent.

Can someone who's keyed up on his game explain how he'd solve either of the 'we need pace up front' and 'we need a goalscorer' problems?

Like yourself I really can't see the fuss about Gallagher he doesn't seem to excel at anything and about half his goals last season were lucky or just keep kicking it till it goes in sort.

I would take Hogan on a season long loan. I wouldn't like a permanent as he's unlikely to appreciate in value and could have a recurrence of a serious injury. I think his style is ideal for us, as he plays of the shoulder and likes the ball into feet.

Hogan has one string to his bow, the playing off the shoulder one and this becomes apparent if you watch his goal compilations! We would have to set up to play that way for him to be a success. Compare that to Sharp or Clarke (on his day) and realise how much we are struggling to get anybody who is a real improvement in.

It's showing up Shane Long for £6.3mil now on News24.
Hogan's been out for most if not all of last season and no pre-season, with knee problems and more recently a groin injury.
Villa backroom staff are taking a softly softly approach to get him match fit.
Chrissy please don't make a rash decision just to get someone in thinking of pace and hope for miracles goals.
Surely got to be another striker out there to try and get a season-long loan. With the same attributes of scoring goals. Surely.

We couldn't pay long for a week.

Having never watched Gallagher play, and getting 100% of my information about him from Wikipedia. It seems he is 6 ft 4 with a mediocre scoring record (about 1 in every 5 games).

So you are basing his height that he isn’t quick? To be fair to him he’s no slouch and isn’t like a Hanson etc.

No he was shocked because it ended up being a loan deal but was quickly relieved when his agent explained it would be made perm in Jan

I can't see any player and agent dropping a bollocks like that

This is what I don't get about this 'loan with a view to buy' stuff. What if - during the loan period - a player gets a career-ending injury? What if he gets arrested? What if he's just shit? What if he's so brilliant the 'parent' club want more money? I just think it's a way to get round the transfer window.

Not I how watched it.

Well how did you watch it?... he says that he didn’t realise it was a loan to perm but then states his relief when his agent explains that in the EFL that’s basically a perm... then finishes off by thanking his agent for working tirelessly and says he’ll leave him to enjoy his young family.

That’s exactly what it is... doesn’t matter what happens now It’s as if we’ve already signed him on a perm.
Which I’m happy about with Norwood by the way... thought I best add that bit

If the fee is agreed and the transfer just needs ratifying in January then presumably the two clubs will have discussed what happens if the player breaks his leg etc. I would guess the move still goes through but who knows.

The transfer window not closing till September is essentially a bit of a farce really and presumably FIFA are to blame and/or the PL. They voted to end the window early, which was great but the loan window still left which still leaves us in the same place - almost. Maybe the PL clubs couldn't vote to close it entirely early, I don't know to be honest. .

Aye, I know the rest, but he mentions panicking when it was made perm in Jan.

Why would he panic if it was just a loan deal?

Because he didn’t want a loan deal... he wanted to move somewhere permanently and get on with his career.
It was a nothing bit of journalism using the word ‘panic’ to add weight to the punchline that was his relief.
