CW is a well known, long term admirer of LG
As he was of Leonard and Holmes

Here's a wacky thought: why don't we just play the striker already on our books who's scored 64 goals in the last 3 seasons rather than pursuing players who aren't demonstrably better than him but will cost a hell of a lot more?

Because 2 of those seasons were in League 1 and age is beginning to catch up with him.
I agree - it would be boring if we all thought the same.
I’d certainly support him if we brought him in and I know the millwall fans do really rate him. I’m just concerned with the potential outlay and that he’s the level of quality we need to progress.
I just had hoped given the money available (CW himself said we have touched the Brooks money yet) we have been able to sort it a definite improvement and long term solution.
I’d be happy if it was LG and a quality attacking midfielder however.
Yep, all relevant points BiL. However, as a reality check, it's probably worth remembering that we're currently unable to afford Martyn Waghorn. Therefore better options, especially younger ones, will also be beyond our means.
Assuming blowing the bank on someone is not a viable option, the only remaining alternatives appear to be:
- lower targets to strikers to the level of Gregory, Windass etc
- take a risk on a younger, unproven striker (Harrison, Eisa)
- opt for a loan.
Not an easy dilemma for CW and his team. and a challenge ahead to land someone by Thurs (ideally) or by the end of Aug if not given a new striker (or 2) has been the priority for some time now.
I’d be tempted by the resale value / potential of a younger player.
We know Gregory’s limit / celing. We don’t of an untapped youngster. If he’s a hit they propell us forward and or get sold for a huge profit. Look at the guy Brentford bought from Plymouth.... if there a miss we can still recoup some money selling on to a league one side someone willing to gamble.
What we'd have to pay now to get Gregory would be a fucking joke based on what he could reasonably achieve for us.
He won't make us a top 6 team or even top 12 team ahead of what we have, and we certainly don't need him to stave off relegation.
Stay well clear.
Realistically, who would you prefer Utd to sign Davalon given the ridiculous prices for players this summer, particularly strikers??

Rather than spend stupid money for the sake of it, I'd rather sign nobody. It will only put us in a worse position financially without any guarantee of improvement.
So play until Jan with 3 strikers, one of which being McGoldrick who has suffered a number of injuries over recent seasons?
Going back down to L1 will put the club in a far worse financial position than signing an additional striker
If you're just after the numbers, then again, there's far better options than signing another guy approaching the twilight of his career that's going to demand a decent fee and wages who I don't believe will do that much.
So, again, you'd prefer to play through to Jan with just 3 strikers? Gregory is 29 not 36. Hasn't a 33 year old just been transferred for €100m?
I didn't say I'd prefer it, I said I don't see the point in panic...
This may be amateur psychoanalysis, but do you ever get the feeling you just don’t fit in?
I don't think Gregory has the same global appeal as Ronaldo, so where that comparison comes from I've no idea.
I didn't say I'd prefer it, I said I don't see the point in panic buying players who I don't believe will add anything only numbers.
Sorry but I quote, "Rather than spend stupid money for the sake of it, I'd rather sign nobody".
You stated Gregory is approaching the "twilight of his career". I was simply highlighting the point that at 29 and barring serious injury, he will have plenty of football left in him. I used the example of Ronaldo being sold recently to demonstrate that the fee for Gregory won't necessarily be written off.
Again, who do you feel would be a '"far better option"?
I'd never settled for Amateur status Pinchy.
I understand, but suggesting ‘no panic’ on here is rather like telling a bunch of red necks their president is a buffoon.
I don't rate Gregory any better than what we have, it's really that simple. When they were a league 1 club and we were sniffing, they were wanting 3m for him. How much do you reckon that's going to be now?
I'd rather see us go in for Armstrong, who I believe will cost less and at 21 has a far greater potential re-sale value.
Is that the same Armstrong who has twice failed at Champ level?
No idea about Gregory's value - I think he's in the final year of his current deal but players, particularly strikers are at a premium now. If CW wants him he's going to have to pay over the odds given his inability to recruit a striker before now
