Wilder said it would take time this summer.

Wages are the issue so we’re offering big signing on fees. I wouldn’t break the structure for players who might not be that much better than what we have.

What everyone seems to be missing is that football is a boom industry and it's performers are on their way to earning similar money to pop stars and American footballers If we want to progress we are going to have to get used to this as the wage structure is going to get broken by our current players never mind ones we want to bring in.

Just like quarterbacks are the biggest earners in American Football, goalscorers are the biggest earners in football and if we want to sign a decent one we need to be prepared to pay them the going rate, irrespective of what Basham at al earn. Does anyone think Ringo Starr earned the same as Paul McCartney ?

Everyone needs to relax. Signings take plenty of time. It’s easy to sign shit player but we trying to get best ones we have plenty of time.

Hang on - you're saying that Sam Gallagher (22 years old with 17 goals at Championship level in 76 appearances for two struggling teams) and Scott Hogan (26 years old with 28 goals in 83 Championship appearances) aren't good enough but John Marquis (26 years old with 5 Championship goals in 42 appearances) is?

There's a reason that Marquis has made the majority of his appearances at League 1/2 level and the others are established second tier players.

Yeah but he hears John Marquis mentioned on Radio Sheffield a lot so he must be good.

A loan would be quite underwhelming.

Need to get someone like him permanently.

Very underwhelming and risky, knowing our luck he will bang them in and then his price will rocket and he will sign for Forrest or some other club splashing the cash.

Do we?

By this point last season we had already signed Evans, Stevens, Baldock, Thomas and Stearman, and that was with a deadline window of 31st August.

We currently have 1 loan in with the deadline for permanent deals being much earlier on 9th August...

Yes we do have plenty of time. Just like we completed our squad before the deadline last year and the year before that.

We have some time still. I’m not sure I’d describe that as plenty. Wilder likes to get his business done early – it’s a much earlier window, and if we want players to actually have a pre-season of preparation (getting to know our system, team-mates etc before Swansea) then we do need to move on this fairly soon. If all we needed was squad fillers to add to an XI we don’t need to improve on, then by all means we can leave it as late as allowed. I would like us to sign at least some players that we want to start from the first game – for those, it’s important that they have a few weeks with us.

The problem with it taking this long is the fear of other clubs realising we're running out of time and could try to bully us into a higher fee to meet deadlines.

We are paying the price for the boardroom split in the NY and the eternity it took to get 'clear direction' .... my guess is this meant we couldn't contact our targets early/late in to the new/old season to get them lined up...

Most clubs are in the same boat as us. Yes there’s some teams who’ve got mental with signing players like Forrest.

But large majority of teams are similar to us have 1-2 through the door and are working on 3-4 more.

From the interviews CW been putting out I get the impression we are only after 3-4 players anyway. I’m sure we are down the way with 1-2 so patience is key. Especially in negotiating circumstances if your very keen you pay over the odds.

I trust CW doing the right things and when he panics I’ll panic too.

Wilder has constantly said that he wants to get quality in and this is never going to be easy given our tight budget and with the shortening of the transfer window. If we're trying to get players in from a higher level I think we're hampered because the Premiership still has its eyes on the World Cup at the moment. Additionally, those clubs are reluctant to diminish their squad and can afford to bring in a replacement first (g.g. Ings in before Gallagher can leave). This even applies to us, as Ched won't be loaned out unless we get 2 new strikers in. If we're trying to get in players from Championship clubs struggling to meet FFP rules I think there's lots of to-and-froing involved, as those clubs are trying to minimise their losses in both transfer fees an wages. Look at the price tag the pigs have put on a Jordan Rhodes loan - I imagine other clubs are trying it on with their players. However, if they really want to get shut, the demands will fall as the deadline gets nearer.

I think we'll get what we want but it willl go a lot closer to the wire than people would like.

Christ, reading the type of panic that I've sadly become familiar with...why can't some posters try and add a little perspective and balance to their view of how the Blades do their business?

It is what it is, and apart from Wilder, Knill, and a few other figures involved in negotiating transfers, how on earth does anyone else know the exact nature of what's going on? Wilder's record has been to announce deals only when they're over the line. Which seems perfectly acceptable and professional to me, but I doubt it will stop the type of unreasonable speculation from rearing it's head. It seems that the only thing that will pacify this head of steam is the announcement of new signings, so off you go guys, don't let anything get in the way of your panic and uninformed speculation. Suggesting the most pointless rumours seems to be the only thing that will satisfy your need to know, apart from that I'm happy to let Chris Wilder get the best deal he can for whoever wants to come and play for the Blades, after all, that's what matters, isn't it?

Exactly. Wilder's got it covered. Relax.

just over a month and pretty certain our budget is hampering us

If we had a huge budget then it's obviously easier but that brings its own problems because teams add more to the transfer fee then would normally. It's frustrating at the minute but we can only judge at the end of the window and as others have said not many teams have signed lots of players either. Still almost a full month to go to the end of the window when inevitably that's when things hot up.

Right.

Let me get this straight.

Southampton have said they want £x for a transfer and £y for a loan.

The player has said he wants £z in wages.

We seem to be fannying about.

On the basis this is the blockbuster transfer saga of the Summer, IS THERE A QUE OF CLUBS WAITING IN THE WINGS TO SIGN THE NEXT JAMES BEATTIE, thus beating us to the punch ??

Thought not.

Sign him, sharpish or move on to other targets.

Could be tho that we are waiting for Saints to sign the striker they are interested in before allowing him to leave (Danny Ings) as alluded to in this mornings rag and hence CW stating how deals may take longer to get done this summer unlike last summer

Only United could have the sort of budget they've dreamed of for years then not be able to do anything with it.

Because...... wages.

I'm not totally convinced that wages are a problem as such. Yes, I think that we are probably wanting to offer a lesser weekly wage than some of the other clubs in the division and we won't want to upset the apple cart as we try and increase the wages across the squad a bit at a time, but as far as a potential new signing is concerned, if we give them a substantial signing on fee, a competitive basic wage, and further bonuses linked to performance etc and maybe other one off payments for targets hit, then it shouldn't be a problem or an issue. I think the issue is that we are taking out time in trying to get more bang for our buck and agents and other clubs are doing the same. We just need to hold our nerve.

Signing Danny Ings will have no impact whatsoever on whether we sign Gallagher or not. One would be a nailed on starter for the saints and the other doesn’t even make cups of tea for the ball boys.

True, but sometimes it's all about numbers

One in, one out

Gallagher is in China at the moment with Saints....pretty good reason for the delay
