RS doesn't do itself any favours sometimes. It flatly denies any bias whatsoever yet the contrast between how it handles the big headlines for each Sheffield club is so ridiculously clear.
Just this week they have allowed Paul Walker to go on air and essentially tell Blades that he would be 'seriously concerned' if he was a supporter following Wilder's rant and the ongoing boardroom battle. Yet just as SWFC publish the most horrendous accounts imaginable, accounts which pretty much spell out how much trouble they could be in next season, RS despatch Staton to speak to the EFL about FFP and then wheel him out on air to dispense reassuring platitudes. All along the lines of 'none of us really know what figure will be declared to the EFL' 'it's all very complicated and these accounts don't tell us the real picture' or my particular favourite 'FFP isn't really very fair at all because it stops really rich people just spending what they want on their football clubs' wtf?!
We have had other examples of course:
The coverage and narrative around Ched, with Tubby Foster's disgraceful phone in and ultimately with no sense of contrition when he was found not guilty vs the coverage of Madine which was in fact largely glossed over.
The Prince taking over SUFC and the morale crusade against Saudi money [Tubby Foster phone in part 2] vs absolute silence on the issue of human rights when that Mamadov chap had taken over SWFC, the same chap who had [allegedly] made a fortune from cosy government contracts with a regime that had the worse human rights record in Eurasia.
There have no doubt been countless other examples over the years, before I used to listen regularly, and there's the catch for despite its faults I do think we are lucky to have such a dedicated Football outlet on our local radio. The individual presenters are all quite good and whilst Staton clearly has an affection for SWFC, I don't think he is anti us, quite the opposite in fact. I just think he likes them more.
Editorially though, the whole station [not necessarily the Sports team] loves to have a dig.
