Can't belive its 20 years ago next week that the blades fan ran on the pitch at fratton park at knocked the linesman unconscious. I know he got jailed and lived down south but it caused major outcry and akot of trouble after the game . I must have been to fratton park fifteen times since 80s and always dodgy as hell but Pompey weren't taking prisoners after the game. I remember jumping a taxi back to my hotel in southsea p*ssed as a fart and fell asleep and woke up next morning not even knowing the score until I bought a paper next day and the lit cane back to me. Mad mad mad scenes.

And think it's 30 years since Bassetts first game there.

Never felt so ill at a game, made up with flu, the journey home was never ending, and we lost!

Only ever been to one away game at Portsmouth tbh, which I remember virtually nowt of except that Reg Brealey was there with us on the away terrace. Apart from that, I recall it being an intimidating place, but can't remember if we won, drew or lost! Must have been in a similar state to what Derby described in the O/P.

Really like Portsmouth as a football club though, see them in a way as "a northern club down south".

Agree with all of that alfreton . very passionate fiercely loyal fans and city itself . A night out there is as rough as it comes but an abiding memory is the 87 game when we beat them at there's 2.1 last game of the season .they only had to beat us to win the league but lost and derby won it. Over 28_000 there with 1500 blades all penned in a little corner . Pompey fans must have invaded the pitch a dozen times that day and I'm talking half the crowd trying to get at blades fans ..it was only a moat and high fence that separated .

I don't know who the blade was but if my memory serves me right he was a butcher from Brighton way and the headlines for weeks again if I'm right were stuff like he should butchered . chop him up . all I know is apparently he had a previous bad rep.

He was from Eastbourne if I can remember rightly.

I was there that day, surreal scene, and it was my fourth visit to Fratton Park and far and away the worst. Coming out of the ground after the match the locals were all braying for blood. It was genuinely fucking scary.

Does anyone know the bloke who did it, or if he has shown his face again at United matches.

He got jail and a life ban but in all honestly can you imagine his first week in jail he asks new cell mates what was there crime and you get armed robbery murderers . drug Lords and they ask him his crime and he says errrr I knocked a football linesman out.

I was there and it looked like he more or less tripped up in front of the lino and caught him with a flailing arm.

Been to pompey many times and was at that game with a few southern blades. To be honest apart from the bits of madness on the pitch I can't remember the game much as the mad stuff overshadowed it. Remember it all kicking off in the streets outside the away end after and fans of both sides running in all directions, we ended up re grouping at a pub miles away with a few bumps and bruises.

I have no problems recalling his name - it’s the same as mine and we’re the same age! I’d not long since moved to Manchester and my new colleagues knew that I was a Blade, so some were surprised when I turned up for work on the Monday morning.

Remember my first visit there I think it was 85 we won 3 nil Steve Foley got two , we had won at Oldham 5.1 week before and in a week we had beaten the top two away from home . Pompey had played 7 at home won all 7 scored 18 and let none in. We had over two thousand there .before the game I was told don't go in the milton/barn pubs but lije an idiot I did but had ni hassle altho I later found out a blade had come thru the windows there many years earlier. The trouble at Pompey was never before but always after usually down that alley .

I've been to Portsmouth 3 times and I remember the guy knocking the linesman out. Something I'd never thought I'd see. The match in 87 was funny seeing them fail to win the title because of a blades win. The men's toilets were crap and usually ended up pissing against a wall. Utb

When I lived down south I went there several times to see United. The ground was rough but don’t recall any trouble.

They air conditioned our mini bus for the trip home.

They did the same to us ST but after a different game.
I was chased on foot before the game and by thugs in a car after the game.
They were still chasing our mini bus 30 miles North of Portsmouth
They kept coming along side us and swiping at the van with a crow bar.
I'd rather hoped we'd just make a quiet exit after the game....didn't help having 'Sheffield Auto Hire' on the side of the mini bus I suppose!
Lost 4-0 as well. A bad, bad day supporting the Blades that was :(

Could be those that made a couple of trips in a mini bus in the 80s driving round pond street attacking pubs tooled up

Work in Portsmouth now and it is like a northern city, just a bit warmer
true.. i used to live there as well.. (just off Elm Grove) it's pretty rough in places like Somers Town and near the Navy base.. it's very un-southern. even the folks there are half decent tbh
some people in Austria were asking me about who i supported etc. when i told them one Greek guy says 'aren't you the team that ran on the pitch and knocked the linesman out'? :D
went to one of the games i think it would be around 86.. we won 3-0 i think

Been numerous times including the 'linesman game'. I was also at the game where i think we won 2-1 when Peter Withe and Phil Thompson were in the team. Saw us play a midweek FA Cup tie there many years ago too. One of the scarier away grounds with memories of bricks being lobbed from the alley way behind the away game and dangerous walks back to the station.

Was that first game of the season ,Conroy had a mare ,Garner was the first player ever sent off for a professional foul ,and we went on the football special. Lets say the walk to the ground was a bit tasty.
