This is an unofficial follow up to the Away Day Etiquette thread.

Living in the south means I struggle to get to games, home or away.

We've finally got a local game which I'd love to take my eldest to - he turns 8 in November. He's not been to one of our games yet. I've got visions of taking the train over, grabbing lunch, getting him in the thick of a Blades pub and really soaking up the experience.

My main concern is the reputation of the chav element in our away support along with the general reputation of pompey fans. While I'm sure my son would love the occasion, I'm a bit worried a bad experience could put him off as he can be a sensitive bugger!

Growing up I went to most if not all of the 90's/early 2000 games at Fratton Park with my dad. From Alan Knight, Gerry Creaney, Peter Crouch, Paul Merson etc, the amazing 2-1 win when Pompey were top but we had Michael Brown, even the day the linesman got whacked. I never experienced any trouble but I'm not sure if my dad was just good at avoiding it!

Does anyone regularly take a youngster to away games? Or is it a bad idea? Like I said, I'd love him to get the whole Blade experience (ideally at Bramall Lane but that's logistically/financially difficult) but not if there's a good chance it could go wrong and scar him for life! He's already asking for Messi/Mbappe/Yamal kits so I need to keep him on the straight and narrow with us!

I hope it goes well if you end up going. As a first timer (the other thread was me) I will report back after the weekend to give my thoughts on an away day.

I have 2 girls (6 and 4) neither would be ready for a home game let alone away as they get funny over loud noises! I did take them to a charity game though which they liked and planning to go and see the women's team. They also wear a blades scarf and hat to school in the winter, think they got a lot of comments last season from boys about supporting a rubbish team which probably went straight over their head and they didn't seem to mind!

How tall is your lad? Can he swing a kidney punch? 😂

You'll both be OK amongst blades fans, likewise Pompey lads, got family living in Pompey area, spent a lot of time down there. Where you living?

In response to both threads it will be absolutely fine at both Norwich for a first timer and Pompey for kids. I actually went to Portsmouth on my own for the first game of the 82-83 season as an 11 year old but things were probably different then.

Generally speaking at most away days if you want to go looking for trouble you will find it. Otherwise it’s easily avoidable.

As for our younger element we were all young once and at the end of the day they are spending money travelling to watch the team we all love just like everyone else and as long as you aren’t directly impacted then I’d say just get on with enjoying your day like they do

You'll be fine. Stop worrying.

Away days have cunts, so do home fixtures but you will only end up dealing with them if you join in.

I went last in about 2010 (the Nosworthy era 😖).

Stayed over for the night too and no signs of any trouble.

I'm in Totton, but back in the day I went to Portsmouth uni so know it quite well. Lived off Fawcett Road and then on Outram Road, loved it there!

Balham Jnr Snr will have his first away day at Pompey if I can get tickets. He’s pretty much the same age as yours Nedski (8 in March) but I should warn you that he’s got an awful record at United games.

As mentioned above, seating places can be 'more fluid'. So just sit where is best, with sensible types. There's only a tiny minority of cocks, and very easily avoided.

Assuming you mean a football banning order record? ;)

I’ve taken all my kids from about 7-8 years old to away games. Never had a problem. Even the chav element know when to draw a line.

Perfectly safe fella. 👍

Well, he did get kicked off the United Community Foundation summer camp two weeks back... o_O

(note: he's a really good kid but we maybe shouldn't have put him in a camp miles from home where he didn't know anyone. Thorncliffe/High Green is not Teddington)

If you can get up to Sheffield on the 26th of October and you want 2 tickets for you and your lad for the home game against Stoke, you can have ours. 2 adult tickets in the middle of John Street. Don't want anything for them, you just need to be registered with the club. I usually give them to a mate when we are on our hols, but you can have first dibs if you're interested?

You live and learn as a parent don't you!

Act sensibly and don't draw attention to yourselves and you should be fine with kids.

However, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a few Pompey out looking for a bit considering it's a while since they were at this level and had us down there (been a number of flashpoints over the years).

Relative lived in Jessie Rd, not far from you or Fratton park, grandad lived in TheRetreet, again not far away
