When we get the ball down on the floor and pass it around, he's a valuable asset to the team. When we insist on booting it through the air, he's not much use - but that's hardly an accusation that can just be leveled at him.
Sorry, I have to disagree with you there matth.
I have repeatedly seen Brian Howard hide behind the biggest opposition player he can find and point towards his nearest team mate, suggesting that under no circumstances should anyone pass the ball to him.
If one of his team mates does decide that maybe Brian ought to earn some wages this week by doing something useful, Brian does one of a few things from his footballing repertoire:
* Knocks the ball out of play under minimal pressure and blames one of his team mates for it.
* Loses the ball to his nearest opposition player and blames one of his team mates for it.
* Completely ignores the ball, letting it run free and blames one of his team mates for it.
* Points at the ball, insinuating that perhaps one of his team mates should be occupying the space the ball is currently in and runs away.
When receiving a pass along the floor, he does not do what we were told he would do and run at defenders, splaying intelligent forward passes for his team mates.
He gets shut of the ball to the nearest person in red and white and goes back to playing hide and seek. It's particularly annoying when he does this away from home, and we aren't playing in red and white
QPR away is a prime example. On our corners and freekicks, Brian decided he was going to be marked by the biggest of QPR's big donkeys and promptly went and stood behind him.
I would perhaps be more forgiving of him if he put a shift in every now and again and wasn't hailed as the next coming of the Messiah when he signed. Just like Cotterill, Blackwell was told he was a fool for not "just paying anything to get him".
Cotterill, with a bit of confidence, has come good. The jury is still out for Brian Howard.
He looked a class player for Barnsley at times, and they aren't exactly known for sexy, free-flowing, pitch-level football
EDIT: Derrywan's text at the QPR game also comes to mind... t'was along the lines of "I don't mean the lad any harm, but Brian Howard is shite."
As harsh as it perhaps was, that day, he was crap. The only game I've seen Howard really put a shift in was Charlton away and against a side as poor as Charlton was that day, it wasn't really that hard to look impressive.
Even if he just ran forward and shot a bit like the Dingles said he could... at least he'd be doing something!
