The John Brayford Debate

Interesting one but Brayford played well as a centre back (right sided) I believe in a three for Burton. Is he better than what we have? Not sure but I he is proven at this level and we keep saying we need a proven Champ defende/centre back and I would rather we had him around than subsidised his wages and let him to Burton or another Champ team for last year of his contract. Yes he may be on a decent wage but to sign an equally proven defender would cost us a decent amount in wages anyway.

Interesting one re comments with Freeman. He has never played regularly for anyone till last season and certainly never been at Champ level playing. He had a great season at League One levle but I feel there are still some questions defensively against good Champ wingers. I have a nagging feeling we may have a different opinion of Freeman come Xmas time. Might be wrong but he is one everyone is saying will be a regular and make step up. I am not so sure.

I would try and bring Brayford back in the fold. If it does not work out sure Clough will come back in end of August again. Means then we may only need one centre back/defender with Freeman, Brayford, O'Connell, Basham, Wright, Lafferty and Stevens across backline. Those 7 and 1 more gives us deccent competition throughout. Assuming we signed one of Holmes/Leonard - seems inevitable one may come - then I think a back up keeper to add to the centre back and maybe another pacy winger/forward and Wilder may be happy with what we have and see where we are at end of August like he did last year.

Would Brayford and Coutts benefit each other in playing in the same team . Who knows we may already have that championship defender on the books .

The question to be answered is as stated by Fulwood . Would Brayford fit in and be a benefit to the team . Brayford has a very important interview when back at work after his holidays meeting Wilder .

I can't believe you read my post and thought I said Brayford wouldn't be good enough for our squad.

Wasn't aiming it at you directly, just using your post to pin mine on to. There's plenty out there who do though.

Some really silly comments on here. Brayfords issue is that he had a very serious injury that he almost certainly back too soon from.

Did we pay too much for him? Yes but he wasn't the only one around that time.

Is he good enough still for The Championship? Yes as he has proved last season.

Should we bring him back? Entirely up to the manager.

Doses he only want to play for Clough? Of course not, don't be ridiculous he's a professional.

One sure way to survive in any business is to hitch yourself to those who look after you. Ask Dean Hammond!

Brayford will follow Clough like Mary's little lamb. It's not impossible he'll go elsewhere but Clough is moving on this summer. And I bet Brayford will follow him. Hence the deafening silence from the Lane about Brayford. You really don't have to be a genius to work that one out.

Totally agree on that one. Nowt else to be said on that summing up of the situation .

Thought when they arrived they were really good mates off the pitch and had a good time understanding of each other on it from their Derby days. I seemed to remember a few flashes when they both appeared for us together. That was before Coutts was transformed into the player we now know

I think Cloughy is a good manager, but he's a bit headstrong and cautious. It doesn't make for great entertainment but he'd have got us to where we want to be.

We've now got a bloke that understands us the fans and what we want. It's a good time to be a Blade.

My only concern is that he may be a bit too stringent in terms of paying a bit over the odds to make us successful.

But I'll hold my judgement on that because his principles are sound.

100% behind him as we all should be.

Very good post ..just on Cloughie , it pained me we sacked him at Derby (for obvious reasons ) but his over cautious approach , meant some dire Football , and he had to go ...not that things have improved much since !:(

As long as we get our money back. Personally I would love him to stay especially as the way he handled the multi billion Pig forward line and gave their fans some grief. Think it's a good point about Tufty being too careful with the budget, but we don't know that for sure. From what I can gather we had a good escape with the player going to Wolves.

JB was signed on a crest of cup euphoria; we over paid in wages and transfer fee , which became the hallmark of Clough's damaging reign.

However, Brayford was Burton's joint player of the year.
I fully get the wisdom of CW letting him go out on loan to free up wages.
But we would be absolutely insane to let him play for Burton again , they just scrapped staying up by the skin of their knackers (one goal/point),
If things get tough next season and we are in relegation battle, it would been shown to be the height of folly to have aided them this time..
With Bolton a car crash club who are losing money handover fist, winding up orders, transfer embargo etc the logic to me is you push Burton further down and that should take care of 2 relegation spots.

We would significantly weaken Burton by retaining JB
If he had to be sold/loaned so be it, but do it wisely.
I trust CW to see this too.

Personally I don't think we will struggle at all next season, but I don't see the point of letting some one else in the same division reap the benefit of a very good player we own.
Next season for me we've got to either use him or sell him no more pointless loan deals, and it would be great if CW could get him back to his best playing for us again

Weh tha wrong then! Simple as that.

It's bleedin obvious isn't it?

Had him at Burton, took him to Derby, took him to Sheff Utd, took him to Burton again. How much more proof do you need Inspector Clousseau?
Erm.... Billy Sharp and Nigel Adkins, anyone?

You're theorising, CB. Speculating. Posturing. Nothing more. Inspector Clousseau would need a bit more than that.

Blimey, this Thread had been taken over by imbeciles

I can't believe I'm saying this but...

John Brayford is no more Nigel Cloughs 'love child', than Jake Wright is Chris Wilders 'love child'
