I don't like unsporting behaviour. I think it's poor form for any set of fans not to find the sporting nature in themselves to applaud a team who have finished champions. Bradford and Chesterfield showed great dignity and sportsmanship when we played them at the end of this season. They were a credit to themselves. If there were Coventry fans at that game who couldn't find it in themselves to applaud a young U18's team for becoming champions then they really ought to be questioning themselves as to why they are bothering to watch this game at all? Because they aren't doing it because it's a sport, that's for sure.

If you sit near to me at any football match, you'll hear me shout "well played" if an opposition player does something good - and you'll see me applaud if they score a good goal. I appreciate skill and I enjoy watching it. I'm not so biased towards my own team that I can't appreciate good football from others. I also don't think that every goal we concede was because we did something wrong - sometimes it's because the other team did something right. I'm disappointed when others score goals against us - but it doesn't make me jump up out of my seat and start swearing and trying to blame someone on our side - or scream "Sort it art Wilder!".

I would say that I'm in the minority though.

There's a "sort it art" bloke sits near me. Always on comped tickets as well.

I am the same - and I think this behaviour used to be a lot more common.

If you look, for example, at Le Tissier's famous goal v Blackburn in 1994-5 that won goal of the season, you will see most of the Blackburn fans behind the goal applauding it. I don't think so many people would do that today for a similar goal.

I also suspect (though have nothing to prove it) that going to games that don't involve your team is less common than it used to be (apart from doing this when you are abroad, which is much more common).

People are more partisan.

I would say it depends how the player celebrates, celebrations were a little more subtle back then whereas now players try to wind up opposition fans, I.E if someone scores a worldie then celebrates in front of the Kop going mad I'm gonna be shouting Fuck off!

I'm sure the likes of Doyle and Collins performed to the best of their abilities while they were with SUFC, but players of their ilk really epitomised why we were stuck down in Division 3 for so long.

To be fair, both Collins and Doyle were part of the team that amassed 91 points under Wilson which would win the league most seasons. Both also played in the team that made the semi final at Wembley under Clough and Doyle played in the following season when we made the semi final v Spurs. In my view the reason we were stuck down there for so long was because we kept selling our best assets and made poor/indifferent management appointments. Yes Doyle and Collo weren't the star players but they weren't weak links either, until Collo was in the last season or two when he was clearly past his best, which Clough realised but then brought nobody better - McEveley. Adkins persisted with Collo for half a season when he was past his best.

Doyle in particular could have given us another season, but Adkins released him and brought in Hammond! Doyle meanwhile went onto get the player of the season award at Pompey!

"Well Mr Mcabe I have released our hard working albeit limited ability captain who was in a side that got 90 points and got us to cup semi finals. I want to bring in a wonder player called Dean Hammond who is so good and works so hard that no one will see it "

Hammond was probably the worst signing we've ever made! It really didn't help Adkins cause that his signings, Billy aside, were actually worst than what we already had!

Our fans clapped the goals scored by John Mitchell (Fulham) and John Fashanu (Millwall) at the Lane. Derby fans clapped Woody's first goal at Baseball ground in December 1975

Wasn't there a bit of a kerfuffle on the pitch towards the end of match between the players?
Yes it was just frustration from the cov kids at the ball being held in the corner and them not getting a last minute penalty which could have gone either way but the utd kids deserved it and the refereeing was horrendous btw.
As for Doyle i loved him as a player no nonsense limited but new his limits and always gave his all. top lad! Nice for him to finish at a club close to his heart!

Yeah did a decent job for us

Are they really worse than Lundstram and Stearman?

Not in the slightest.

Whether people rated his football ability is opinion based but in my time we've had many worse players.

However my point was about his professionalism.

I regard professionalism as one's ability to do a job with competence.

In my opinion, Doyle's job was to captain the team to promotion - a job he failed.

He was a good player

Based on what? If he was any good it didnt reflect in our performances on the pitch.

He was a leader, put tackles in, protected the centre halves and did a proper captains job.

He can't have been a very good leader: we languished in league 1 for far too long and didn't look like returning until he left.

I was never his biggest fan, but compared to Hammond, Doyle was like Roy Keane in his pomp.

We should all sit down for 5 minutes and just reflect how shit things were in the 2 years BC (Before Chris). We had some shit players, under managers who couldn't inspire and no obvious pattern of play.

Whether we go up or don't even make the play offs, this season is a raving success compared to those dark days.

Thanks Alan and Chris for giving us our club back.

its a team game

I know it's a team game, I'm not saying he's solely responsible.

The fact is though that he captained that team, therefore had more influence than any other player. The job/expectation for the 11/12, 12/13 and 14/15 seasons was promotion - something which he failed to help deliver.

I give him credit for the FA cup run in the 13/14 season, but he's no different to Jose Baxter in that regard.

I'm sure he's a nice bloke, and he obviously talks the talk as numerous managers have picked him as captain. However, his performances for us came woefully short of the mark, as evidenced by one of the poorest periods of the club's history on the pitch.

I could just copy my comments from the previous page on Doyle! I'm a fan but for some he is was responsible for us going down - single handily and then responsible we didn't get promoted during his time again single handily, assisted by Collins of course. For me he was a sold League One player and was never going to be the man to change our fortunes in the Championship. You need someone alongside him who can create and score goals. Doyle played alongside McDonald who was a better version of what Doyle was.

Anyway, good luck to Doyler, and I hope County stay up - proper football club.
