We might as well fuck the academy off. Pointless unless you are in the Premier League. All we are doing is producing kids for top sides to pay us 700k for. Might as well look in non league for the odd gem.

The thing is, we've had several goalkeepers over the last few years that have had great potential that hasn't been realised. Jake Eastwood, George Willis and George Long have all featured in the England youth set-ups, and the view of most academy watchers was that Willis would overtake Long – that never happened.

I really hope Ramsdale becomes an excellent keeper for us. But currently can anyone say with any certainty that he will become a first team keeper in one of the top two divisions?

Eastwood was on loan at Mickleover Sports, but doesn't seem to have played the last few games. Has he been brought back? How does he compare to the others mentioned above, Willis, Long, Ramsdale?

It wouldn't be the Blades if we didn't sell someone in the transfer window. Long as back-up it is.

We should put clauses in every academy prospects first professional contract whereby the club have the right to keep the player for a set period of time. 5 years I'd say. Similar to a long term contract but without the financially binding nature so if we choose to release the player he's not entitled to a 5 year pay off, but that of the rest of his 1 year contract (or whatever it may be).

No idea – I've never seen a minute of him playing. But the fact that's where he is highlights the promise-to-results point.

In other news of keepers that never quite lived up to the early promising reports, the wonder keeper we were linked with Dean Brill has just joined Colchester on a free from Motherwell...

Unfortunately and in my humble opinion, Long is not the answer, especially when the question is: who should be a capable, trusted and confident back up keeper for Moore?

Yep but what you going to do about it. Get on his back? Coutts was allowed a fair crack and he might be returning to 'form'

Unlike some, I don't get on any of our players backs. I support them, but thanks for asking

I have an opinion about all our players good and bad, but don't abuse any of our own when at the match and I do my best to behind our lot. Regards the opposition however, now that's a different matter

Wasn't aimed at your in particular pal, sorry. Just in general it's the bladey way for some to have a go at their own

No probs. My reply was a bit strong anyway, so apologies from me also

I always say that when the day comes that I boo my own, I will stop going

I get frustrated, I whine and whinge when things aren't going our way, but I don't and won't shout abuse at our players. I just see it as pointless and counter productive

Why produce young players, to never use them. Might as well bin the academy if that's what we're going to do.

We've thrown away a great opportunity to get serious money for him by not offering him a contract good enough to sign.

And the same might happen with Brooks and Whiteman.

We might as well just not bother. None of them get to the first team and the ones who are sold don't even go for good money. It's a fucking waste of time.

The academy is effectively there just to fund itself and we get no benefit from it in between.

More evidence - not that it was needed - that we will go nowhere under McCabe.

He was out of contract in the summer. We cant guarantee him first team football. We either lose him.for a pittance in 6 months or get circa 2 million in now - its not like he is a 1st team regular.

Not sure what we could have done really on this one.

Can't see the point of The Academy anymore might as well mothball it and use the money to try and win a promotion or two.

I don't get that. The kid refused to sign a new contract. He or his agent aren't daft. He knows his worth and if he doesn't sign a new contract he is more attractive to other clubs as they can take him at the end of the season and we are left with a tribunal imposed fee. We are between a rock and a hard place with someone like Ramsdale and I can't blame the club for getting 700k now rather than 170k in 5 months.

Now no doubt you will possibly argue that the reason he refused to sign a new contract was that we didn't offer enough. Any evidence?

Only if we don't have a senior player. Long is a senior player.

Really? Any link to that rule as I don't think that's correct unless something has changed.

And to add to that, it's not going to get any better as long as the big clubs can cherry pick whoever they like for a pittance.
