Hes not a robot.

Hes a human being with a young family.

Yes he is a shit footballer and has no place in our upwardly mobile squad going forwards, but I don't blame him. As I say, I would defy any Blades fan to put the long term financial interest and stability of his/her family below the interests of the football club. And no one would expect it.

Hammond isn't even a fan so who could blame him for not giving a shit.

The blame is with Adkins and anyone else responsible for what I will now refer to as the madness clause.

And the Dronfield golden gong goes to................

Hammond wasn't as bad as people are making out, not that he was good. He was appalling in the last match against Scunthorpe, but that match bore out the frustrations of the pathetiic nature of the whole season. We could take no more. He typifies the average ability in an average squad (middle of the league 11th), but he should not be singled out for sacrificial lamb status.

Totally the opposite for me Barney. Make his life unbearable, work him to the bone doing endless thankless tasks with the boundaries of his contract and give him the minimum time off allowed. He at least then may reconsider his position, even if it was out on loan. If we make life too easy he will sit on his arse forever. By signing he's already proved he doesn't give a fuck
You aware of the laws on constructive dismissal?

Sorry, but I don't want to see any of our players persecuted. This is a negative side note regarding Hammond on an otherwise outstanding bit of news that the majority of our useless squad are gone. The new regime have done what they can by transfer listing Hammond immediately so let's just see what happens with that and look forward to the new blades squad. Hopefully we can be proud of this one.

He's a footballer who plays for money, just like most people who go to work.
He didn't write his own contract, he's just taken up an option that was offered to him when he signed.

Most people don't have the kind of bargaining power to put a clause in a contract that keeps them in a year's work in a job where their work has been awful, the management think they're a waste of space, and all the customers despise them. And most people aren't just leaving a job on Premier League wages. So forgive me if my concern for Hammond is somewhat limited compared my concern for most people.

Not just at you, Bert, but also the others making similar points: I get that Hammond is looking after Hammond, and he's entitled to do that. A lot of the frustration being vented is because this isn't the first time a ridiculous clause in a contract has hurt the club. It seems like we put ourselves in the worst positions quite frequently on these matters. The fact that Hammond is a very wealthy man who would find other highly paying work (granted, maybe less than he's become accustomed to) if he waited a while only serves to make his position far less sympathetic.

Re Hammond, if he even has a modicum of professional pride, he'll have a good long look at himself over the coming days, decide its not worth the hassle and retire. Which he should have done after the last game after he got the run around off Scunthorpe.

Bert , some of us have morals . Hammond has none . I forgot that footballers just get the minimum wage .

Let's get real . Mercenary is too nicer word .

Anyone who agrees with Hammonds decision , well what more can one say .

Nice one Bert.
Why does how much money you have any effect on if it's moral or not?
Its got nothing to do with it and the "moral" outrage on here is hilarious plus I'd wager highly hypocritical of posters on here. If they were offered unemployment or a guaranteed 500k payout but they had to work at a place they weren't liked they wouldn't turn it down.

should be noted that Dean Hammond has decided to activate his option of a permanent Blades contract and George Long has been offered new terms.

Alex Baptiste, David Edgar and Conor Sammon have left the club following their loan deals.

These players have been released:

Mark Howard, Bob Harris, Callum McFadzean, Terry Kennedy, Harrison McGahey, Jay McEveley, Florent Cuvelier, Ryan Flynn, Jose Baxter and Jamal Campbell-Ryce.

Additionally, the following players have been notified that they have been transfer listed:

Kieron Freeman, Kieran Wallace, James Wallace, Dean Hammond, Paul Coutts, Martyn Woolford and Diego De Girolamo.

Club Retard strike again

Scum? Really? He's optioned a contract which he's quite entitled to do to ensure he gets paid probably about 500k. The club will have to pay him off if they cant move him on and he's certainly towards the backend of his career.
Most sensible people would activate the clause while you looked for a better offer, that not greed just plain sensible logic.
If he'd played a blinder all year and gone elsewhere in guessing he'd also be greedy scun?
Irrelevant as he ain't "played a blinder" for about 6 years probably . You must be his agent or one man fan club . After how's he been received any normal person wouldn't have signed a contract to stay in such an environment therefore yes he is a greedy scumbag cunt

What would you have done in his shoes? Walked away and signed for Boston United for 350 quid a week on a on a one year contract (which is about his only option) or taken up his contract option?

So happy with the list. Good riddance to most and I'm so glad we never have to see any of the losers in a Sheffield United shirt ever again. Been a long time coming this.

Just hope we can find someone to take Hammond off our hands. Surely he knows he has to go, if not he's going to have a very, very miserable time.

Now, time to build our promotion-winning side...

If it would affect your view of this situation his performances are quite clearly relevant.
I don't rate him, or think we should have signed him, but that's not the point. We did offer him the best deal and he took it as any sensible person would.

No I'd have waited for my puppet master to get a new job and live off the millions I'd earned over the last ten years

What really annoys me is:
- plays like a completely useless twat in the last game of the season
- sulks as Adkins hauls him off
- does not appear for the "lap of appreciation"
- next we hear about him, he's invoked a clause in his loan deal to take a full contract, god knows for how many years and on what wage packet

Let's face it he doesn't give a fuck about this club.

I am struggling to imagine a situation where allowing a footballer the option to activate a clause, that grants him an additional year on to his contract, could ever work in the clubs favour? It seems a bit like owning a shop and letting the customers set the prices?

But whatever, if any current employee of Sheffield United, was involved in the inclusion of this clause in Hammonds contract, he/she should be fired, immediately.

As for Hammond, it just illustrates what I said a few months ago, too many players were prioritising their own self interest above those of the club and going through the motions, for fear of getting promoted and being thrown off the gravy train.

Some posters disputed footballers would have such a mindset, well, if nothing else, Dean Hammonds actions will provide them with a much needed reality check :(

In another thread you thought it wasnt possible for a player to sign a pre-contract in January. It has been happening for a few years now!

Not sure how that is related to this silent. Who on earth would trigger an extra year on Wallace's contract? You would have thought the clause would be on our side?

What makes you think he's saved millions? Generally the more your earn the more you spend. I'm sure he's got a sensible pension but I doubt he's got millions stacked away, not so much that he can turn down a guaranteed 500k.

You were insistent that Wallace wasnt on a three year contract. Earlier today you said I was wrong about players signing pre-contracts as early as in January!

Seriously Barney ... If some mug offered you a contract like the one our board offered Hammond, would you turn it down?

Money for old rope...it's the board/whoever agreed to this needs looking at...and, I'm guessing they're long gone..

How can you blame the board?

They are ambitious and support their manager to bring the top targets to the club.

We took ages negotiated with Hammond joining the club. I remember many Blades saying "pay him what he wants" and "and there's no way well but a PL player because we're not ambitious enough".

Similar situation with McDonald. His demands were unreasonable but most Blades said "give him what he wants we must keep him", so he signs for us as long as we accept a £30K bid from another club.

I keep saying it over and over. We have the most ambitious board in league 1 and pay the highest wages and rightly so but many ages take the pi$$.

This explains why the board expect quick results from the manager and explains why Adkins was sacked.

.....and the club/fans don't give a fuck about him either so it seems to be all square in that regard.
I really hope he now wins the new manager over and becomes the driving force to promotion. I doubt it but we should all be hoping that is what happens.
Obviously we don't care for him having watched his performances.

I genuinely believe the phrase "his legs have gone" is appropriate. His disciplinary record also suggests he just cannot hack it in this division. He can't run, he doesn't get close enough to put in the tackles required which is why he hauls players down all the time and his distribution is nothing special. It's just not going to happen whether we wish for it or not.

Williams back.

I imagine Hammond activated his clause while Adkins was still in charge, all we can do is make so uncomfortable for the twat that he ends up begging to leave.

Yes, the board are ambitious, but they appear inept...or worse, disinterested.

The fact is they sanctioned this Hammond deal as if he were the saviour highlights their frailties for a lot of Blades.

It also goes a long way in explaining how clueless they are re: footballing matters...your 'argument' appears to be saying the board are basically doing what the average fan wants so can't be wrong...sorry, but I'd like some professionalism at the club rather than some rich blokes who have either been 'born into it' or are so convolutedly entrenched they don't know how to get out without 'losing millions'.

Hopefully we've now got a manager who can take the club by the scruff of the neck, who understands the club and how the board work/think and can actually lead the club and take us forwards....

The board alone simply don't have the wherewithal to do that...
