McCabe pop at Adkins

If every manager he's appointed has "mutually agreed" to the strategy that was followed, then each and everyone of them deserves to be out of work for the rest of their lives because I don't believe I've ever seen any business lurch from one direction to another as much as this one so I don't believe there has ever been a real strategy 0 you know, a 3-5 year strategy supported by annual plans on how it will be delivered.

Going by his woeful performance this last season, the only strategy Adkins would have been capable of delivering on would be the "take us down deeper into the mire" one.

Amazes me how many Blades (albeit a seeming dwindling minority now) would have been willing to let him wreck another season & set us back even further from the historic low point we're at now.

Spot on Tyler - And didn't he have a pop at the previous manager about the players he'd signed once he'd left?

Yeah, it's becoming a bit of a pattern isn't it? We bring in managers on high compensation, sack them and then the chairman comes out and says they were crap all along. It makes the club look incompetent and undignified.

The mistake could only be, as some think, was sacking Clough. At the time I recall the majority of Blades fans seemed to want him out

Two thirds were in favour of Clough being kept on, based on a large poll on here and another on BM. In fact, most Blades supporters have shown commendable patience and tolerance towards managers since relegation to Div 3. McCabe, rightly or wrongly, has, evidently, been far less patient.

I'll defend Adkins here, we don't actually know that Hammond would have been signed? The board might have blocked it anyway but if he did sign him then Adkins would know that Hammond would have to excel to prove people wrong and it would put Adkins and Hammond under imense pressure. I thought Adkins should have spared Hammond in the last game for that very reason.

Hammond has been signed. Adkins oversaw a one-year option being granted at the time of his extended loan deal. That's why we were continually being softened up to his "unseen" attributes and why Adkins had to play him in the final game. Given that its inconceivable he'll play again for us, we will be left with buying out his option.

McCabe's non too cryptic point about Adkins and Hammond is spot on:

“But if managers sign them then they play them. Sometimes, maybe managers should accept mistakes rather than try to paper over them. We all make mistakes but sometimes, if you admit them, it’s easier to correct them."

Hammond was a plausible enough signing, given his pedigree, he just couldn't deal with the pace and agility of younger, hungrier players. Instead of facing up to this, Adkins chose to keep digging, losing credibility along the way and eventually creating a hole big enough to bury himself.

That must be on a pre contract deal?

My son said to me yesterday "You know, a big hallmark of a manager who has lost the plot is playing players out of position all along, something they never did in their prime ( or in the upward curve of their career)".

In McCabe's words, it's better to have a manager who's on the right point of "the upward curve". I'm afraid Adkins, Wilson, Adams, Robson and Clough were all on the downward curve. Weir and Speed's curves hadn't even started. Blackwell's curve was more a wavy line that wandered without purpose.

Wilder is an interesting manager whose curve has been gently upwards until a sudden surge lifted the graph way off the chart last season. All those years of hard graft seem to have steadily taken him to a different level, which has given him the opportunity to manage exactly where he always dreamed he would manage.

The mix of experience, grounded character and the pent up energy and ambition he undoubtedly has will hopefully help him operate successfully now he is in S2. Wilder strikes me as a manager who knows a player who does his best and asks no more, knows a character and knows where to play players to get the best out of them; a man who knows what system he intends to play and won't compromise on it.

I sense that in Alan Knill we have the best No.2 we have ever had. Knill was a good manager whose all the better for the listening to. Not the best P.R. man but bucket loads of common sense and insight. Wilder is not our most polished manager ever, far from it, but don't you just get the sense he knows what he wants and how to get it. No, he's not the most eloquent bloke in front of the cameras but he'll say it as he sees it and if we play badly he'll say so and if we're not making enough progress he'll admit it. How refreshing will that be after this past year.

Whilst not knowing the full facts about who signed Sammon surely the club haven't made a similar cock up again?
You'd think the board would want a look at a player before agreeing to this irrespective of what the manager thinks?
I suppose it could have been part of the original loan deal but the same issue arises then.

Personally I could never understand those thinking of a player coach deal being acceptable or a bench player on decent money after watching him play.

Again though, questions have to be asked about the board regardless of Adkins crush on Hammond if he's signed.

Geoff Taylor and John Short are hard acts to follow.

You must be psychic!
Not sure what it proves (apart from we're not very good at choosing managers). Nine managers gone in nine years and a steady decline. I've not included Carver or Morgan (twice) as the sample size is too small. Memo to Wilder. Ring in sick between the 10th and 16th of the month.

More details here. The leaving dates are those shown.
..erm, I think there must be some kind of 'typo' on David Weir's 'win ratio'... ;)

I'd just like to hear McCabe say, for once, "I apologise to the fans. The investment in the first team playing staff hasn't been good and we don't have much to offer for the next twelve months. I don't have any plans to sack the manager because it isn't his fault. I admit our playing staff across the board is poor and our recruitment strategy on and off the pitch has reflected this. If the fans can keep supporting and understand or predicament I am optimistic and confident we can slowly turn this bad time into a better time with promotion to the Championship. I the meantime we will continue to do our best for Sheffield United, and more importantly, it's fans."

If he came out with that, instead of the chicanery, sophistry and barefaced lying through his fucking teeth whilst blaming someone he fucking recruited, over someone he recruited and blamed, over someone he recruited and blamed (etc) then maybe his critics would be quite so cynical. But the whole thing from us being relegated tice through the lies of Game Changing Investment makes me sick to the fucking core of this man.

I swear to god next May we will be in the same position with McCabe still issuing blame to the blameless who he has just sacked and supporters on here saying 'why didn't we give Adkins more time?' whilst missing one or two big grey, betrunked animals wandering round the room.

Nowhere with McCabe. Common denominator.

;)
No wonder that director bloke is making a boat load of dosh at Pyramid Carpets , Chesterfield Road , with all the rugs and carpets , blades have had in the last couple of years. As you say more competitive than John Lewis.

Wilder will finish up with Lino or mats from Home Base and still succeed.

UTB

Theyl take some Beating;)

I'd like to win the Euromillions jackpot but I'm not on their site day after day clutching my ticket waiting for the unlikely to happen.

We haven't been relegated since the game changing investment comments btw. We were in L1 then.

Adkins blameless? Really?

F
We shouldn't have sold some of the players we did and failed to invest the money in decent replacements over the course of 9 years.
Sometimes owners should admit their mistakes instead of deflecting them.
First rule of management. Find yourself a scapegoat. . . . .

The problem is that we allow every new manager to come in and bring their own players in, for stupid money and never live up to the praise given by the manager bringing them in. Then the new manager will move them on because their not his player. I hope wilder breaks this cycle and by the signs of him revisiting the released list, he just might.

Since he took over last week I have been looking at the 2nd division and there appears to be a lot of players who are up and coming who are available free or cheap. Hopefully the transfer committee will already be all over some of them and we then have the perfect boss to say yes or no as he's seen them first hand. As well as that, these players will know the boss and mostly be impressed.

For me it really does have a Bassett feel about this appointment in terms of picking up some gems (not the style) but I don't want to get too excited until I start seeing some transfers and young hungry players coming in.

We can blame McCabe all we want but in life sometimes you need to draw a line through the mistakes and move on. I really think this will be a successful transformation.

His interview actually pretty much says everything you've written to be fair to him.

Yup. But the inference on the day the Prince cam on board was one of upwards and onwards. I think 'Game Changing Investment'. cannot be understood in any other manner. We have remained in Division One ... and in fact finished at the lowest position for many, many years, despite that investment. If that investment meant paying off manager after manager when sacked, buying a new pitch and basically financing shit, underpowered signings, then no, it hasn't quite done what I expected it to do. Me and many others, in fact.

Adkins blameless? Really?[/QUOTE]

No. But not at all wholly blameful, as McCabe is now starting to allude.

The common denominator in our decline is McCabe. He can hire managers and sack them all he wants. We are going nowhere with him.

The problem I have with McCabe blaming Clough and Adkibs is that you wouldn't expect either of them to sign cheques. The last two managerial appointments seem to have been allowed to do what they want financially while the co -owners seemingly sat there eating belgian biscuits/ sheeps eyes while they did it. So it's either bs or incompetence.

Hey up Sean. When I say 'forever' it's for effect and I don't think ' should I think this through and work out whether it's forever and a day'. ;):)

Let's hope I'm absolutely strictly correct though and it's for ever and a day.

Mind you the Assistant Manager when we last won the F.A. Cup must have been really good. What? OK there were no Assistant Managers then. OK, the bucket and sponge man.

Take the point my friend. Wilder has a non-sexy very capable No.2.

OK sorry, I'm not "your friend"

Kev reminds me of a greasy businessman from the '80s. Nothing is ever his fault, he only employs yes men and he completely forgets that the internet exists when he changes his tune 3 times a year. He's likes a smug used car salesman who got lucky.

Silly comment, KM is a quality Blade, just not showing well at the moment. I have a Leicester fan and mate who was in favour of street protests 12 months ago, no exaggeration.

What will you do Blade if we achieve back to back promotions all of a sudden? Will you keep your pseudonym? Big deal, fellow Blade.

I'm talking about how he comes across. No doubt he's good at real estate and construction (and also using a football club to line his pockets and cement his reputation abroad) but he's a loyal, yet incompetent, football club chairman. He's been dire but he's propped us up. If we did get back to back promotions it certainly wouldn't have been down to him.

If Chris gets promotion it will be despite those fuckers above him, not because of them.

In fact didn't a poster on here say he'd been drinking with Wilder and he mentioned his distrust of the board a couple weeks ago?

Replace "investment hasn't been enough" with "allowed employee after employee to spunk vast resource on shite" and I'm with you all the way.

Sums up my thoughts exactly.

Can't sum it up much more than to say this one feels like a postivie move.

Was willing to give Clough a chance but he hadn't achieved a huge amount and derby improved after he left and Adkins didn't pull up any trees at reading and despite the best cv we could hope for never really got to grips with the side or showed any improvement - there seemed to be an air of the emperors new clothes with him.

Wilder is a Guy on an upward curve, who will be desperate to make things work at a club he's passionate about. Hes worked well with lower budgets and earned his stripes. We need someone to get the best out of the squad.

We'll have a manager that know a minimum we expect is effort and endeavour. Keith Edwards was right in saying as long as the players actually give it a go we'll forgive them mistakes.

Cant remember the last time it looked like these players left everything on the pitch.
