Do we not need to be careful about putting the cart before the horse? I keep reading about Pemberton being the next Mourinho but if I rememebr rightly we'd lost 2 of the last 3 games. I hope against hope some lads come through but it should be supplementary to the shaping of a new first team squad not the bedrock of it.

Absolutely. They said it would take 6 or 7 years for the academy to start showing it's worth and after 6 years the Kyle's appeared. There's a few more on the fringes of the squad this season so it looks like the conveyor belt may be starting to move forward a bit but yes, we shouldn't rely on it although it does have to be a start point. To me, Robson was never going to pick the kids and whilst Blackwell did, it was more necessity than choice, SO'D is more likely than most out there to give them a chance.

I'll give him time, but I think he'll have a couple of games before certain people start bandying around "knockers" and "clappers", Sean O'Dour or other hilarious pseudonyms and wheel out the usual..."the majority of fans think..."/"...All Blades agree" sweeping statements that we know and (sic) love.

Sean O'Dreadful was the name Donny fans gave him a few years ago although it seems to have been wiped from most of the memories !

We wern`t in the Relegation Zone when Robbo was Canned, we were 5 points above 3rd Bottom having just drawn away at WBA.

I suspect a 0 - 4 reversal at home would see the heat turned up on SOD, ala Speed

I know - I'm the only person on the planet who'd have given him a bit longer. :D

SOD will need plenty of time if people think he can get our current crop of players, playing the Donny way.

I'm sure a decent manager could get this lot playing decent football

The only people who wont give him time are the same old morons who never give any manager, or any player time at this club.

The sames ones who loved to boo Ifill, Tonge, Cotts, etc, the list goes on and on.

Nothing will change the way they act, they dont have the intelligence.

SOD would be a wonderful appointment for this club. Give him a 5 year contract and ignore the fans.

well some intresting views here.
personally i think so'd should be given every possible encouragement, this thread for eg, might be noticed and relayed, the fact that there are several other threads mostly pertaining people being pleased by the idea of sean managing our beloved blades, speaks volumes.
as for money, youth players and whatever if he signs, he will know where he stands im sure.
as a lifelong blade, i for one would be upset if we were relegated but if thats whats needed to turn the ship around, and head for waters new then fuck it, bring that on as well, we've survived a few relagations in my time, including the almost ultimate drop to old div 4 and came back stronger.
So'D might just be the one to take this team forward again and, as opposed to other recent managers KEEP us there, hes young(ish) tactically sound(ish) has ability to bring the best out in players (a real must at BDTBL) and is used to working within pretty strict financial guidelines.
id give the guy at least till end of 2011/2012 season then see if we have moved backwards, forwards or stood still,a few games or half a season is nothing in football and we should remember the blades are eternal ;)
for a change get behind birch n co and lets push this So'D forwards in the hope of a new dawn in SUFC fortunes, remember success breeds success and money :)

An honest mistake I'm sure, but you seem to have omitted Mongomery from that team.

You question peoples intelligence then quote ignore the fans. You couldnt make it up.

He's got 'till tommorrow night to sign.

We can't afford for Carver to win to many games [daft I know as we play for points] but too many wins will split the fans, the quicker SOD is signed up the better to avoid splitting the fan base. We already have muppets calling RS asking for Carver to be made manager after one fucking game in charge. Jesus.

I would give him all the time he needs. I have waited since John Harris' departure to get another manager who can spot real talent and make a good team to play attractive football. I am getting fed up with watching a team that is capable of not much more than giving 110%. I can see that on Sunday mornings at any park in the area. Let's not waste this opportunity to see something far better.

Come on Mr Birch/Mccabe write your names positively in United's history by doing the right thing and other fans to back him properly from the start and give him whatever time he needs, the end product will be so worth waiting for.

SoD's profile would then certainly fit with how Pembo is now running the Academy lads

From the Star, Pembo said at the AGM:

"Anyone who comes to watch us will see all of the teams we've got, right the way through the age groups, playing the same way. That's how it has to be."

At what age does it stop being 'the way to play'?

"What I want to do is put some more Sheffield lads out there on the pitch," Pemberton, who made over 60 league appearances for the club during his own playing career, admitted.

"When I first turned-up here there were people like Dane Whitehouse, Jamie Hoyland and Mitch Ward who, okay might not have been the most talented, but had hearts as big as buckets. They lived and breathed this place. It was part of them.

This part of Pemberton's quote is amusing because if you are creating a youth set up the last thing you want to do is go back to what it was like in the Bassett years. Bassett had many positive qualities but bringing on youth products was not one of them. Ward and Whitehouse were youth products, and good ones, but they were literally the only Bassett era players who came through the youth team and played more than a dozen or so games.

Hoyland, of course, was not a Blades youth teamer at all - despite his family connection to the club. We signed him from Bury after he'd started at Man City. Plus he wasn't very good...
