Would you feel for Billy?

I think Leon and Clayton to start, and then it all depends on the scoreline with 20 minutes to go. If we are ahead, and if Donaldson is tiring, then Billy comes on, and hopefully, plunges the final dagger into the heart of the pig fans with a goal. The one man they would hate to score, and the one man who would love nothing more than to score against them.

OK, it's all a bit, "When Saturday Comes", but if ever I wanted someone to deliver the final, crushing, goal to that lot, it's Billy.

Me too, no question. As you rightly say or imply though It shouldn’t be any basis for real world team selection. Roy of the Rovers, perhaps.

I hope you’re all joking. If Billy starts he’ll score. Absolutely no doubt about it. He’ll be up for this more than any game. I’d absolutely start him in this game. Plus if he scores his confidence will be back immediately and he’ll be back on a roll
Confidence hasn't been the problem though has it ?

Admittedly harsh on The Don, who's been excellent recently. But how long ago was it that that goal went in off Billy's arse (or wherever) against Coventry? He'd been on a shocking run of form and, lo!, he was off & running again as if his poor form had never happened.

I just don't buy the "Billy's finished" subtext. He played well at the weekend & he'll be raring to go now. And the Bladeyness is an added ingredient on top, but an important one to add in to the mix - potent fuel to the already burning fire.

Unconvinced I’m afraid. Billy may well not be finished. I don’t suggest he is. He’s not in our best team at the moment though. CW has rightly made that very clear.

I’d be delighted if Billy got the winner. Absolutely delighted. Leon would be nearly as good. Ched’s not available. It has to be Leon and The Don at 7-45 though. I think you know that, deep down...:)

I'm assuming they'll be defensive and they're fairly solid at the back. I think Clarke and Donaldson are the obvious starting pair as they'll give them the most problems. It does negate our wingbacks a bit as Sharp is better getting on the end of crosses. Unless we're losing, I can see Sharp coming off the bench.

I’m afraid that, despite welcome common sense from most, there is a great deal of Bladey bollocks around.

The idea that the team will be more ‘up’ for a Sheffield derby in front of a sell-out crowd, fervent atmosphere and TV cameras if Billy is leading them is too daft to laugh at.

It’s professional football. When the whistle goes not one of the eleven will give an ounce of effort less because Sharp isn’t playing. Of course he shouldn’t start. You pick your best team. He isn’t in that right now. Let Leon and Clayton get at ‘em.
professional footballers don’t need motivation eh?
.. tell that to Carlos ;)

Billy will play some games not others , as will quite a few, We have strength in depth and can rest players for their and the teams benifit

But there is no doubt Billy will score some vital goals yet this season

billy to come on after an hour and get the winner when we're bangin the door down last ten minutes.
can see it now front of the kop.

Haha, I'd be more than happy with the two pensioners up top in honesty. Just got a feeling in me waters that William's going to come good again on Friday.

We'll see.

I have a confession to make. I have, from time to time, down the years, got things wrong. Sometimes badly wrong. This I know, because such is the devotion of my most fervent admirers, that they have my complete works at their fingertips. As fans, they are in the same class as those of the great Alan Partridge. I can pay them no higher compliment than that. I am truly blessed and I thank them from the bottom of my heart.

Of course my published works are extensive and voluminous. One must be selective. My devotees all have their favourites just as I have of my own inspiration; Dickens.

Unfortunately; and entirely inadvertently this personal selectivity can serve to mislead. Those who prefer my “got it wrong” efforts may disturb the balance of reality. Modesty forbids me from reciting at length from my multiple volumes of “got it bang on” so I won’t.

On a general note I offer this. The only people who never get anything wrong are those who neither do nor say anything worthwhile.

Heartfelt stuff Maude, almost as poignant as...

It's a big no from me to the little flecker. One good season and he's a must have. He hasn't the height or presence and his goal scoring record of 10 league goals in 9 years as a pro would put Montgomery to shame.

There's also the chance of Billy getting a little over-excited and getting himself sent off.

Exactly, we choose the team to do the job, and if Billy gets on and scores it is a bonus.

We’ve seen Billy get wound up and try too hard in the derby before; I don’t think he’s a red card risk, but in those games he was awful because he was too desperate to score.

We all want to see Billy score against them, including CW. He’ll pick the team he feels gives us the best chance of winning the game which may be with Billy, Wilson or Don alongside Leon, or even none of them and a similar lineup to the away game with Leonard or Evans coming into the midfield. I trust he will make footballing decisions on the lineup and give no thought to sentiment.

In the same way he won’t bring Billy on for his moment of glory if he thinks it could risk the result. No guarantees he’ll get on the pitch, but I hope he does in the right circumstances, I hope he gets his derby goal and I hope his maturity allows him to make good decisions in such a high pressure game.

Ultimately he will play a big part in the game; in the build up and during the game his experience and passion will be a hugely important influence on the squad.

you alright mate? :D
CW will sort it .. he can be ruthless when necessary but also understands the psychology of the game

Blades, who wouldn't get a tingle down their spine seeing Billy lead us out?
All this 'bladey' bollocks is saying that in football, you shouldn't be bias towards other Blades or romanticise players who play for clubs that mean more to them than money.
Football is entertainment, watching Billy shhhhhhh the snortbeasts after scoring against them would be me done for life.

Winner off the bench against Pigs ,,,,then a thankyou and good bye end of season ....every body happy

We’ve seen Billy get wound up and try too hard in the derby before; I don’t think he’s a red card risk, but in those games he was awful because he was too desperate to score.

I’m pretty sure Sharp was desperate to score at Elland Road, not only in a derby, but one vs his former employers. That didn’t go too badly.

He made the bench in the first game when he was injured!

Yes, that doesn’t really align with the “no sentimentality” approach. There’s also this snippet from his Sky interview ahead of Friday.

Wilder: "We dominated the first 20 minutes, got into so many good positions but then got in off a clearance. Great scenes. Our biggest doubt before the game was Billy Sharp. Speaking to the medical staff it was impossible for him to be involved but I knew how much it meant to him. I thought it was important to have him on the coach, in the changing room, in the dugout. My biggest disappointment is that I couldn't get him on the pitch. But Leon came steaming over to the bench and that was for the skipper."

I thought there was an outside chance Wilder would start Sharp Friday. After reading that I’d say it’s odds-on.

If he doesn't get a sniff on Friday night?

I mean truth be said, if it wasn't for Billy's heroics last season...We wouldn't be where we are now would we!

I remember the interview when we achieved promotion, one part in particular in which he said he couldn't wait to have a pop at Wendy. Obviously he wasn't able to do this in the first fixture through what was described as an injury, but now he has a chance of missing out again through recent form and falling down the pecking order a bit in recent weeks.

To an extent I do feel for Billy because he has come back to the club that he loves and despite being shit on from a great height in the past, he came back with a hidden agenda and delivered the goods.

You have to start any game with your strongest XI at the time I totally get that. But I would expect to see Billy make a cameo at some point in the game. He's had his fair share of grief from grunters in the past and has as much to prove them them as anyone else, if not a great deal more.

How do you approach this? Any room for sentiment?

I'd approach it the way Wilder approaches it. And he's clearly stated on several occasions that when it comes down to managing there is "no room for sentiment". And he's totally right. You cannot possibly, not even for a moment, manage people and allow sentiment to affect your judgement. You can feel sorry for them, you be can be gutted for them even, but the moment you start making decisions based on emotions like that is the moment you start to lose the ability to manage. It has to be based on current form and performance. Anything other than that and you create a huge problem for yourself with everyone else from thereon.

Billy still has something to offer, but he's also in the twilight of his career. He's done fantastic for us, in this, his third stint at the club. But it's only natural that as the club progresses Billy will fall down the pecking order and that's what's happening. If he does come on, for footballing reasons, I hope the lad gets a goal or two.

Here’s a novelty for quite a few of you then.

How’s about the gaffer selecting Sharp ON MERIT

You know? That fella who’s on for 200 career league goals !!

Form is temporary ........

Got SFA to do with sentiment, BladeyBladeBollocks or anything else for that matter.

MERIT.

In Tufty I trust.

Which is an encouraging sign of the maturity I alluded to.

Wednesday is a completely different beast though.

For me it’s Donaldson every time , but if Billy is going to play a part in this game he has to start because Donaldson’s pace in the last 30 that will be difference when their cart horses are fooked.

The way Wilder spoke after Ipswich i wouldn't be surprised if Billy starts on Friday.

Either way, i wouldn't be disappointed if we had Billy or Clayton alongside Leon.
I thought the opposite, will come on a a impact sub, they will have to make a big strategical change to him on the pitch disrupting their game and it will deny the pork the opportunity to boo him off if he's not performed to good. But as it has been proved indisputably I know nowt.
One thing is for sure old Lukyfuker (whatever he's called) will have watched the VT of the first derby over and over
