Wise Investment Vs 'Spunkin-it'

Then you end up with a player that you didn't want and a player that isn't good enough...= bad season

To borrow your term, in 'modern football' you can never be sure of getting your target and for that reason you always have a Plan B. You may even have Plans C & D as well, if your scouting network knows all about what is available.

I can however see the advantage of your 'plan'. Cough up whatever stupid amount the selling club wants and have done with it and no more hassle. That is always easier when it's not your money.

It's a fine balancing act bettering the squad vs fucking up the wage structure , easiest way to break squad morale is bring in one or two high earners. Causes dischord and then at the time of contract renewals average Joe wants wage parity with champagne Charlie .
I don't believe in this throw money at it and instant success there's a lot of clubs throwing cash at it but only 3 will go up , investors get bored and then want the cash back out of there loans to the club .. yes they loan money they don't give it away !! Look at Forest under the Fawaz-Al -Hawasi they were all saying new dawn , new investment , he soon got bored & they've had 2 flirts with relegation .. is that what we want ? . A successful club is built over time , I'm sure most of us over 30 don't want to return to the boom or bust approach , because ultimately dumped us in the shitsville league for 6 years.
I took us 6 years under Warnock to take us from the worst side I've seen in a Utd shirt ( Adrian Heath ) to promotion . Bought & sold well , developed the academy that's doing us proud now .
We're a million miles better than where Warnock started from so I see a bright future for the patient . too many people buy into the Sky sign 10 internationals from Unknownarovia because it sells news better than a Young player coming through the ranks , too many crave instant success / failure now.
I just wonder how many on here would be shouting for CW's head if we didn't win in our first 6 games for example ?
My fucking pet hate is when 'fans' boo the team off at half time if its 0-0 , I think FFS there's 45 mins left get behind your team !!!!

Another example I'd use for the boom & bust approach .. QPR mega millions owner Tony Fernandez .. bought enough players for 4 clubs .. got promoted .. came down quicker than Jordan's knickers .. then stuck with a squad with population of China on money than the Sultan of Brunei would be embarrassed about & full of blood sucking mercenaries on 2/3 contracts thinking fuckit I'll sit my time out in the stiffs or on the treatment table .. fuck off on 'free' when my contracts up and look for the next QPR or Sheff Weds ... we've had too many of these wankers at the Lane .. let the S6 brigade fall for this one

Boom and bust? QPR have been in the Prem and Championship whilst we have spent 6 years in L1 - so even during their "bust" period they were above us.

They say, generally, where you finish is about how much you spend. I'd like to bet we punch above our spending budget and finish higher than a few big spenders.

Just playing devils advocate here but when talking about "wise investment and spunkin it", how would most fans have felt if we'd signed Phil Jagielka when we were heavily linked with him a few weeks ago?

Like many I'd have loved to have seen him back at BDTBL but his wages would have surely been far in excess of others in the squad.

Would fans view the huge outlay in wages as a wise investor or spunkin it?

I would have only been happy with signing Jags if it was on a year deal and it was heavily incentified around appearances and staying up. I doubt he'd sign such a deal and another team would likely match his current wages.

I think the club would be stupid to break the wage structure. I doubt the signings of Leonard or Holmes would do that.

On the face of it, we comfortably (in the end) won the league. We've got almost the same set of players. You wouldn't want to change it around too much, especially in the beginning.

The areas of possible concern for me are GK cover, CB (It's a huge ask to rely on Wright to step up again), MD cover and upfront (I don't think Hanson, Clarke or Lavery are good enough to start - Jury's out on Evans.)

We can use the loan market (no problem with that whatsoever) to plug some of this, but I'd like to see a 'starting' striker and CB brought in before the end of the month, at least.

Not after last season. If it was looking very bad in December, then maybe then. It would have to be very bad though. He's earned a season at least, and he'd probably be the best man to get us back up again if the worst happened.

As much as I don't feel we need too yet. Sooner or later if we want to be successful in the championship we're going to have to 'break' our wage structure.

That wasn't the case when we went up with Bassett and Warnock. We just need a certain set of players plus the manager who are up for it with the fans who are behind them. It's a simple game, all this money talk is a fucking joke.

They were completely different times, the money in football has gone onto another level, if not ten. To think we can compete with the likes of villa, middesborough, dare I say even Wednesday on the budget of a top end league one team is very naive

That's the point SUFC I'm trying to make we can't compete financially with them at present and maybe not for a year or 2 hence why this has to done in stages ,Re- that was a different era ,yes it was different numbers but same principles apply , when we went for it under Kendall era & Robson it didn't work and we ended up having a fire sale getting players offf the wage bill , there's always been clubs more financial clout yes over a time period you to buy to compete but as I said in my first post that's a fine balancing act when we don't have the finances they have

Agreed, if we were talking a player at a Championship club for £2m or signing Jags, I could understand it dragging on.

But these are League One players, I know they aren't going to give them away but I'd like to think now we're a Championship club we could get the deal done without too much fuss.

You've got to remember these two players are the best at their clubs, and they do not want to sell.

Southend have a very stubborn stance on Ryan Leonard, even though he wants to leave.

Charlton would rather eat metaphorical sh*t before letting us sign another one of their players/targets.

There's some real shit on this thread.

Facts.

We are spending what we can afford to lose.
We won't get to the end of August without signing a keeper and a couple more
We won't have the smallest budget in the league...or even the lowest 5.
Huddersfield got promoted with good management and recruitment, not spending the most money.

You can argue, have a go at the club, McCabe, the prince.....but those are facts. I don't give a toss what others are doing, or how much they are spending. Clubs like the pigs, villa, Sunderland will be losing figures that are beyond comprehension.
I'm happy to let them get on with it.

totally agree with your post. We've all seen the silly amounts of cash that have been flying around in the last couple of years . Money doesn't always guarantee success!. I trust wilder with his approach!!!. It's working so far. We'll strengthen again in January if wilder thinks it's needed.

A lot has been said about us wasting money, we are brainwashed and programmed into a belief that spending money is not the way to achieve success

But failing to spend money is a sure fire way to failure

Of all the supposed millions we have supposedly wasted, how many times have United signed a player that made United fans sit up and say WOW !

Very very very few times because they spent money on crap.

This is not the same as spending money on good players

It just seems to me that because we have signed too much shit for too much money in the past we are no longer prepared to spend decent money on anybody.

The trick is to get the RIGHT players, and if an excellent manager has identified these players, and these players are not ridiculously overpriced they have to be signed

The manager has identified two players who he seriously believes can play in the Championship and seriously believes can improve our first team, and the club won't spend £700,000 on Leonard (reportedly) and probably a similar amount on Holmes.

Wilder is the Chairman's dream, he's told we will not overspend on anybody and he accepts it and pretends to agree with it

If the board released a bit more cash Leonard and Holmes would be signed by now regardless of what Wilder says

The relatively pathetic amounts we are talking about to try to get two LEAGUE ONE players in is worrying me now, it has nothing to do with Wilder's stance and more to do with the boardrooms knowledge that they can get a stress free and cheap season without too much abuse as long as we just hover above the relegation zone, preferring to put their faith in Wilder's motivational skills than do something positive themselves.

Seriously though a lot of that is just made up.
