"Despite manager Danny Wilson travelling home just hours before kick-off to attend his daughter’s university graduation, he arrived in England confident that progress is being made"

What do people think about this? I'd have thought it's quite important that he sees the team playing as much as possible before the season starts. I'm not necessarily saying he should have missed his daughter's graduation but surely he must have known about this when the pre-season fixtures were being arranged.

Couldn't he have made sure we played on Sunday night or tonight instead? Do people think he should attend the match anyway when he's being paid handsomely to manage the club. Or is the graduation possibly a cover story and he's really flown home to seal a big hush-hush transfer?

I don't know anyone that has had to take off more than one day for a graduation ceremony. I know he has said he will watch the video of both games, but it seems a bit odd that he isn't returning for the 2nd match given it isn't till tomorrow.

I think it's only fair and reasonable that he attends his daughters grad ceremony.
Some family matters are more important and that is a special event - so well done to his daughter.

Malta is probably more about conditioning and getting into a pattern of play so Barlow is just as well equipped with Morgs to sort that.
No biggy in my book - not as though they are teams you can learn much from - unlike Donny and B'Pool - who with both wipe the floor with our lot.

I didn't even know that bit! That makes it much worse..

Maybe cost cutting - flights too expensive? - Or maybe he is overseeing some clandestine transfer activity and it is a smoke screen, planned not to arouse suspicion.
Nah. cost cutting it is.

I think some people will say or do anything to have a pop. When there are other things so very and deeply wrong with the club is the Manager flying back to the UK (how do you know he wasn't signing a player or somesuch?) and not seeing a friendly a big deal. FFS he has an entire team of people around him who can tell you who played well and who was khark. He may have been really sneaky and used that dark magic called video.

Perhaps he has seen all he needs to and is flying back to make 11 signings because the team is that shit? Who knows? But some will make a holy shit storm in a thimble if they can.

I'm actually generally happy with how things are going with DW - having not wanted the appointment, I'm much more optimistic than I thought I'd be. That doesn't make this, on the face of things (and given he's very new to the club) look a bit odd. I'm hoping there is another (good) reason behind it.

We probably can't afford the extra fare for a return flight.

If he flew home to attend a personal engagement, I would expect him to pay his own extra air fares anyway.

I thought my original posting was quite mild really. I did suggest it might be a cover story and I did say simply changing the fixtures would have avoided an issue arising. If you think that's a "holy shit storm" you wait until we have a bad result or two and less reasonable individuals start wading in.

Pretty much my thoughts exactly.

Somethings are more important than football as long as he prepares for the last 2 home friendlies it shouldn't affect much.

If he doesn't know enough about the players without seeing them have a run about against some Maltese waiters then we are in some deep shit.
Pre-season matches mean Jack Shit apart from getting people fitter than they'd have been sat on their arse in front of Loose Women.

I wouldn't be too worked up about it, but it does seem strange that he has to be away for several days, Malta's only 3 hours and there's plenty of flights and we're on good terms with the local tourist authority.

Of course he's right, his daughters graduation is an important famy occasion, I personally would have done exactly the same.

I attended my sons graduation (passing out) on Friday and apart from the birth of my kids was the proudest moment in my life. I would be disappointed in him as a person if he hadn't flown home. A bit sad that other people wish to use it as an alternative way to form more negatives.

Just to clarify, I didn't say he should have missed the graduation.
I said the fixtures could have been arranged around it and there's no need for him to miss the second match.

With you entirely on this one DD. Barlow eluded to that fact the even though he isn't there for the matches he's still picking the sides.

He'll be in charge for the two friendlies here, which are closer to the start of the season. No problems from me

Soton - can't you take a leaf out of Matbianco's book and replace the banana dance?
It's no where near as good as the melon dance you had before.

Doesn't bother me he has gone back home. Very important day for all the family.

The Malta trip in my eyes is pointless anyway. We should be playing sides in England that can give us a challenge. Like the Donny & Blackpool matches. Get a few more of those in rather than playing some mugs in Malta.

Ditto. I'd think much less of the man if he didn't go back. I'm yet to see anyone come up with a logical reason on the face of it though as to why he isn't returning for the 2nd match, given a graduation should not take up more than a day. Some might argue there's no point, as the Malta trip is fairly pointless - in which case, why are we wasting money sending the squad there?

I'm not wanting to argue for the sake of arguing, as there are plenty of people that have attacked DW for some ridiculous reasons. But I imagine he's still learning about the squad, so any time actually seeing them all play between now and the start of the season is actually pretty important.

A logical reason is he could be speaking to targets and may want to speak with them in person. Or dealing with other transfers, Ched's hearing was today too maybe he wanted to attend and show his support?

Like Firth said, this is all about conditioning, he doesn't have to be there to oversee that if he has other matters to attend at home, he has a capable backroom staff that should be able to take care of the second game.

No problem with this at all. Wilson has not done much wrong as yet, apart from not getting shut of bloody Collins!!! ;-)

I think with all this talk about whether or not he should have flown home/missed the games, we are missing out on the more important issue here.

Is she fit?

When I graduated from Sheffield Poly i made the mistake of telling my mum she didn't have to come if she didn't want to. She didn't.

Dude, regardless of her aesthetic qualities, she's 50% danny wilson. Think about it.
