Has anybody sat in the home end at Hillsborough, against the Blades?

Yeah, but years and years ago. I'd have been in my teens. It was this match: https://www.espn.co.uk/football/match/_/gameId/49401/sheffield-united-sheffield-wednesday

It was grim. Their ground is a hole, their fans are like whining, groaning, smelly, illiterate, underpaid, greying, spiteful, resentful, deluded, malnutritioned, white lightening drinking, wife-ran-off-with-their-cousin, orks. And that's being polite. If Sheffield City Centre is a bustling metropolis, they are the snidy, jaded forgotten nobodies, living in Scar's Outlands (Lion King reference, for those of you whom are fans).

In the match, McCall had a driven shot from the edge of the box, that was the closest we came to scoring if memory serves. I had to sit on my hands through fear of jumping up. Didn't find it the easiest thing to do, to be honest, but in some ways a damn sight easier than sitting in other home ends, because at least my accent blended in.

My mate sat in their end the other year too, and one of theirs spat on him as he left. He simply replied "Big and clever that, pal."

Scruffs of the highest order. UTB.
You have a Barnsley accent ???

yeah was at both those games up to the september 67 derby at the lane home fans were behind the goal at the bottom with away fans above but united changed that in 67 by going to the top of the shoreham so wednesday fans couldnt be directly above us pigs did same in reverse fixture at the sty jan 68
I would have been at the 68 game but can’t for the life of me remember anything about it. Was that when Carlin scored, ‘cos if it is I’m sure we were above them ?

Cheers

Mick Hill scored from a Carlin cross

Oh ok. Amazed I can remember anything at all from 1968 but recollect Carlin sprinting across the pitch. The Mick Hill memory I have is the goal against Leeds, think Woody was in the nets and the weather was foul. Memories eh !
Your memory serves you well. Carlin ran the length of the pitch at the Pigs and they just let him keep going. He laid the ball off to Hill who had caught him up and he promptly put the ball into the roof of the net right side of the goal. I was directly in line with Carlins run on the Leppings Lane end. It silenced the crowd as they had been rocking about Fanthams opening
goal as the announcer said it was some sort of record.

Fond memories of this game as it was the only one my dear Dad took me to at the Sty. I was too young to go on my own and had badgered him to take me. He'd had an operation 18 months earlier to straighten his leg and was nervous about big crowds hence why we stood next to the Pavilion at the Lane. When we came out we exited by the dreaded tunnel and the crush was so bad I got lifted off my feet. Dad got hold of my arm and eased me forward till we got to the end. Its a memory that resurfaced the day of the 96 tragedy. Looking back now he must have been really worried about the crush and the impact it would have had on his leg. He put that to one side to let his lad have his day out. My hero.

Was in their South for Bobby Davison night with obviously quite a few other Blades on this thread! Went ballistic when we went 1-0 up and got told to shut up and sit down but that was the extent of any aggression from the Wendies...older and wiser I don't think I would do it now though.

One of my earliest memories is watching United at the sty sat on the home end. Was on the stand where the dugouts were. Remember seeing a grey haired Nigel Worthington trotting about. Don’t know what game it was though - did he play in more than one Sheffield derby for them in S6?

Edit. He must have as he played for them for 7/8 seasons. Shame I can’t remember much else.
I think he only played in one at Hillsborough, so must have been the 1-1 draw in April 1993

Flipping ‘eck, you must have a reyt archive !
