Pleased as I am with that win ratio, it is a third division win ratio and he has not got us promoted yet.

So no, I do not think he is our best ever manager.

Being the best ever manager should be based on the win ratio in top division matches. Would that be Harris? We didnt have a proper manager until Ted Davison in 1932

I looked at the Blackwell thread and an urge came over me to look-up his managerial stats which lead me to this schedule, and provided a bit of a shock in the win % column.

Wilson 57% win ratio the best in the history of the club.

Sorry I have to go back to John Harris who was by far our best manager in my Blade watching career.

Dave Bassett is a very close second.

DW has only performed in the lower divisions but don't get me wrong I like many enjoyed last season apart from the end,he now has to rebuild minus Ched,Lowton ,Willo

He will play football providing he can keep the key players fit but I worry he panics when things don't go as planned

I agree Wilson hasn't won anything, so just can't be regarded as the best. (yet)

Although, his stats are based on a year or so in the third tier of English Football, you have to accept he has achieved his results on a modest budget, with an average set of players, unlike the resources available to other managers on the list.

Wilson has done an excellent job to my mind, all things considered.

Whilst it's very difficult to choose 'Best Ever Manager' given how football has changed over the years records suggest that John Harris was head and shoulders above the rest - I thought he was excellent as he was in charge during the glory years when we had the likes of Jones, Birchenall, Joe Shaw, Alan Hodgkinson, Doc Pace et al but my sentimental vote would go to Dave Bassett - he took us from third to first (Premier) in three years - and brought us the likes of Deane, Agana, Tracey, Kelly, Rees, Hodges, Bryson etc -Danny Wilson has a long, long way to go to be discussed alongside such top managers!

I saw that stat before and have to say it is pretty impressive. However you have to factor in the division. Plus there is more than just the win ratio as the mark of a good manager. There the sucess factor (promotion primarily, staying up too, cup runs etc). There is also circumstances and what they had to work with. For example if you look at Kendall and Spackman's win records then the latter is ahead. However I would rate Kendall as a much better SUFC manager than Spackers. Kendall took over a team that was destined for relegation, kept them up, turned them around and got them playing good football very quickly. He then went on to get the team (on a pretty low budget) to the play off final. Spackman took over a team that was pretty good, quite confident and was given plenty of cash to play with (although he did have the rug pulled from under him a bit later).

What Basset achieved on a shoestring is absolutely incredible. Warnock's record is pretty impressive too. Especially when you factor in that he was never given any money (until 2005).

Not by a long shot, lets see what happens at the end of his 3 years, in charge. Has to be ''Harry''
Bassett also thought for his time at the club ''Porterfield'' did a good job, Harry Haslam's only plus point was ''Sabella '', thought Kendall & Spackman had us playing some good stuff, Robson/Adams best forgotton about.Uncle Colin, took his time to get going but almost as good as Bassett. Uncle Colin good at getting teams up but not very good at keeping em there. Think
he would have taken Q.P.R down as well if he was left in charge. Bassett, Warnock in that order FOR ME.

Used to like warlock but to hear him talk now i hate the man, his best cup win now to hear him is that lot beating everton reserves, did he not say that when we beat le ds here when Jags scored?
Harris is the main man for me.

How can Bassett be a very close second if Harris is by far the best?
Yea you right that does not make sense

However Harris was the blades best manager and he did it with home growns and shrewd signings

Spot on summary for me Olle, but everyone will naturally favour the ones that they remember the best...

They will, but some of us are (sadly) old enough to have lived through more than others and our views might, therefore, be a little more authoritative?

Harris by a distance!

Anybody who remembers how crap we were when bassett took over, then how amazing we were with deane agana and the rest would find it hard to get too excited about wilsons team. his signings were legendary. nevermind all the long ball nonsense, we played fast dynamic exciting football. it only went wrong when we did our usual old trick of selling our best players.

did danny get us to thrash the piggies home and away? he hasnt even managed to get us out of division three yet. getting 90 points is useless if you dont go up, may as well have got 50 points. winners get over the line. ok ched didnt help, but were we good enough to win those games at the end of last season to get over the line? of course we were. but we didnt.

Both Bassett and Warnock deserve praise for what they did. But Harris also worked on a shoestring and produced the best sides to grace Bramall Lane in the last 50 years or more.

To be fair though when Harris was manager, there was much more equality amongst teams and the likes of Burnley, Derby and Ipswich could all win the league. Relatively speaking, vis-a-vis the top teams, Harris had much greater resources than Bassett and Warnock when they managed in the top division.
