I do think they'll be scared to do it and we'll just limp on unless we go on a 6 or 7 game losing streak or there is a takeover. The fan base is split down the middle so the board are going to be unpopular whatever they do.

The reason it's quite different is that would have been correct a year ago, and is clearly miles off right now.

And the reason why it wouldn't matter is that regardless of whether there is more reason to sack him now, there are still many many blades behind him to the very bitter end.

Well my eyes are deceiving me then. And in the most recent poll, almost three quarters want a change.

I'm really not sure what you're looking at.

Of course, nothing's ever unanimous.

And the reason why it wouldn't matter is that regardless of whether there is more reason to sack him now, there are still many many blades behind him to the very bitter end.

I think the people who want him to stay fall into 4 camps:

1. The people who feel this is a terrible moment for even more upheaval. With the club already in a transitional season, and with little trust in the current owners, they see Wilder as a stabilising force and believe change now would only make things worse. The likelihood of the board getting the next appointment right is very low based on what they've done so far.

2. His mates. This group are the most ferocious for obvious reasons. Personal loyalty to a friend gives them even more emotional investment in the situation. We'd probably all be like this if our mate was manager.

3. Those who are struggling to let go of the nostalgia of his first spell. Wilder gave most of us the best years we have ever had as Blades, and that creates a deep emotional bond. A win under Wilder simply feels different because it carries the echo of that first era. No other manager can replicate that feeling, so people cling to it.

4. The ones who fear the unknown. Wilder is a Blade, he gets the club, and it clearly means more to him than it ever will to an outsider. If he goes, we’re stepping into uncertainty just like we did with old Ruby Selles. Whoever comes in won’t love United the way he does, and they won’t have that built‑in connection. Losing that kind of loyalty is a huge safety net to suddenly be without.

I get all of these positions to be honest, particularly the first. My own thoughts are we should never have gone back the second time purely due to camps 2,3 and 4. I don't like how a lot of the fanbase are so emotionally connected to a manager for reasons that have nothing to do with what's actually happening on the pitch. I don't think you'll find many fans who genuinely think he's doing a good job at the moment but there is so much emotional baggage that comes with Wilder being our manager. It clouds judgement and makes any conversation about change feel far more dramatic than it actually is.

That was a much longer post than I intended when I started writing it. To be honest I've wasted my time and I've wasted your time

Do you really think the polls on here are representative? And this is no insult to here nor the people on it of course.

Go to Twitter and see what people are saying under posts from the club and interviews with Wilder.

And what do we think that very bitter end looks like?
Odd question as 'bitter end' is obviously hyperbole. But the point being that they would follow him and find blame in many other places first before Chris... even in the case of relegation.

"he's been knackered by the owners"

"the players haven't backed him"

"the support didn't get behind him"

"he's the best man to get us back up as he knows the division"

"he's a blade and understands the culture"

Are they acting in his best interests though, or their own? There appears to be a lot of sycophancy around him, and I think a few of them enjoy the status that they think, wrongly, being the manager’s mate gives them.

Not I don't. Especially after a defeat. But there's clearly an enormous shift on the opinion on him compared to when they sacked him after gaining 92 points.

I haven't actually voted or called for his head myself, I'm arguably a 1 in Roygbiv 's category.

But there will be a very large proportion of fans who aren't calling for his head that would consider it far more understandable than last time.

And I'm the same in terms of being a number 1.

There may be a larger number who would shrug their shoulders if he went, but the louder group would yet again decry it as an outrage that we're sacking a bladey blade legend.

Although I believe he should have gone at the end of last season, since the legal disputes I have been in the first camp. However…

As the games go by (and the interviews), I just can’t see any progress being made, nor do I see any potential for it changing either.

It’s not just the results or the performances - his comments, decision making and post match assessments give me no confidence whatsoever for future improvement.

I used to love listening to his comments before and after the games. Sadly, that drive he once had seems to have gone.

I thought Rosen’s interview and his acceptance of the mistakes they’ve made along the way gives a little more confidence in future decisions.

As much as I wanted it to work out with Wilder, I just can’t see it happening, and I think it’s only going to get worse the longer this goes on.

It’s time for a change.

Ah Twitter. That absolute bastion of reasoned debate.

No one speaks for the fan base as a whole, so there can’t be a single channel to point to as evidence of X or Y, however the poll on here has changed significantly since its inception. At on point I believe it was 90/10 in favour of him staying.

All we can hope for is that people start looking at the evidence behind their reasoning and make informed judgements. I won’t hold my breath as fact checking and reason is the enemy of the quick dopamine hit of social media, where you can easily find ten other people who agree with your underlying thoughts.

For me the writing has been on the wall during and since the 92pt season, watching turgid performances that were masked by narrow wins for the majority and then being found out in the worst possible way.

Last season was more of the same, and the fault was laid at Selles door, despite being in charge for a mere six games.

It was obvious this season would be more of the same, but the slim hope I had was that CW could recruit wisely on a budget, and at least make us hard to beat.

Instead, we’ve got his little black book of former players, who struggle for fitness and are passed their best. There’s a reason there was no competition for most of these signings.

Replacing Hamer with BBD, not replacing O’Hare, chasing Souttar for up to £10m, sacking off Jairo and then crawling back with a reduced offer and wondering why he doesn’t look arsed anymore, chasing Anel, signing Phillips, fucking Hamza and Ayew, I mean what the actual fuck is he thinking with these signings?

Wages alone we could’ve signed 3/4 hungry lower league players and the worst case would be that we’d be losing games. Shock horror, we’re losing games anyway.

CW will be here til the end of the season, like others have said we need a big reset and the board don’t have the knowledge or resources to make that happen. Dropping to L1 won’t change anyone’s minds either, as they’ll hark back to us getting 100pts in that league, so CW is obviously the right man in charge.

That’s his legacy now.

This is a great post, I am also in number 1 group and if you could guarantee that we won’t get relegated then I would leave Wilder in charge until next summer then have a clear out of staff, players including Wilder. The problem I have is I am beginning to doubt whether he will save us from relegation

I was the same until this last week. I thought he'd keep us up and see us competitive. Unfortunately, I genuinely think we look like the worst team in the league right now. We haven't deserved to win any game in what's been a kind start to the season. Only Wolves of the teams we've played will likely finish top 6. I have zero idea what the plan is in terms of attacking

i put the stats i found last night into AI to ask what it would conclude from a Hypothetical championship team
------------------------------------------
This team is surviving—and possibly overperforming—via an extreme, hyper-efficient low-block style, but their process is fundamentally unsustainable over a 46-game season.

Key Conclusions

  • Complete Lack of Territorial Control: Ranking dead last (24th) in shots and touches in the opposition box, and 22nd in possession, indicates a team that spends almost the entire match pinned in their own half. They offer virtually no sustained attacking threat or pressure valve to relieve their defense.
  • Severe Deficits at Both Ends: Being 20th for Expected Goals (\text{xG}) generated and 19th for \text{xG} conceded means they create very few high-quality chances while giving up a large volume of quality opportunities to opponents.
  • Catastrophic Defensive Exposure: Ranking 1st (worst in the league) for shots faced means their defense and goalkeeper are under constant siege. Conceding the most shots in the division inevitably leads to heavy fatigue, higher risk of red cards/penalties, and opponent set-piece opportunities.

Likely Scenarios

  1. If they are high in the table: They are riding an unsustainable wave of variance. This typically means an elite goalkeeper having a career-defining season, opposing teams finishing poorly against them, or an extraordinarily high conversion rate on rare counter-attacks and set pieces. Once regression to the mean hits, their results will drop off precipitously.
  2. If they are in a relegation battle: The metrics explain exactly why. A team that allows the most shots in the league while generating almost no box presence or xG will eventually be overwhelmed by numbers over a full campaign.

Again the Sheffield United obsession of just being better than Sheffield Wednesday.

Wilder is shit now but we're still better than Wednesday so we should be happy.

Whoop-de-fucking-doo.

It's the same as the "We've been shit before so just accept being shit again" crowd. Some fans seem genuinely more comfortable with being shit because that's just us

I don’t think Wilder is racist or xenophobic for a second, but I do think the insistence on focusing on UK based players is massively hamstringing us. It also gives teams and agents the chance to rinse us knowing our list of alternatives will be smaller than our rivals.

We’re apparently following David Moyes’ Everton blueprint from his first stint which started… a quarter of a century ago.

Surely the owners can’t pay all this money for us and then not be worried the plan is to copy something from a completely different time. In what other professional sport would progress be following a strategy from 25 years ago?!

Some people are comfortable with us being shit because there's a Blade at the helm.

Probably the same people whose eyes were popping out of their heads when we kept losing under Selles.

Unfortunately we've had 600+ votes on here but it sounded like every single one of the 1,900 sung he's one of our own yesterday, when will they stop maybe when we're in league 2

The chant was incredibly half hearted. Lasted for about 30 seconds with only half joining in. He's definitely lost a lot of away fans but I do agree the majority of them are still behind him.
