Why can't we defend set pieces ?

Alcock has a great leap and usually does a marking job at our set pieces. Barnsley had Cole, Nyatanga, Cranie, Ramage, Bailey and Hourihane who were all taller than Winnall, so we may have thought others were bigger threats.

unfortunately, we don't have a similar amount of players taller then Alcock. I see what you're saying, but we are conceding too many goals from set pieces and the only noticable difference is that Howard doesn't seem to come for the same amount of balls than he used to. I think that's what got us out of jail on a number of occasions last season. Back to the subject, I wouldn't have Wallace marking Winnell on their best striker who is more of a threat than the guys you mention.

Ok, yes that looks like Wallace not Doyle. The closest United player did not get off the ground to challenge. I know Winnall ran on to it but the closest player must at least challenge.

I've just looked at the TV replay again and it is definitely Doyle right next to Winnall when he heads it, yet he doesn't seem to be in this photo. It doesn't quite catch his full run so it could have been Wallace who was marking. He got very high in meeting the ball but he got no challenge from any direction.

Yes, strange how Doyle is almost completely hidden on that photo! On the photo you can just see his head/hair above Wallace's left shoulder. It's typical again of BladesPlayer to zoom in so much on the corner taker that we can't see what's going on in the box.

From what we do see I think Doyle was marking Winnall, Alcock was marking Cole and Wallace the other guy.

Sometimes that can happen, but with the amount of holding and shirt pulling that take place at set pieces, you can't rely on centre halves doing much more than marking the biggest threats. Having a tall zone man centrally placed and free to attack the ball is a good idea in my opinion.

and he is called.....................BASHAM - but in yesterdays sort of team there is np place for Basham, unless you drop Doyle or Wallace. Doyle is IMHO playing too well (never thought I could write such a thing) and Wallace appears to be a golden boy.

Tough dilemma for NC - but then again that's why we are paying him loads a money!

Our centre halves usually mark the biggest opposition players. If the ball were not aimed at them we have to look at our height and marking ability among the rest of the side.

I've not seen the goal yet, but doubt McEveley or McCarthy were marking Winnall.
spot on bergen every one has a man to mark and it looked to me Doyle was the one who winnall impeded to score
doyle should have been stronger.
