Who should take our penalties?

Loads over the first 3 pages saying Gus Hamer, and I understand why as he strikes the ball well.

But, why has he never taken a career penalty? Maybe he doesn't want to?
Some players just hate taking them. I used to play with a lad on Sunday's that had played nearly 200 lower league games and played high level non league for 10 years or so. The proverbial could land a ball on sixpence was true for him, was head and shoulders above everyone every week and barely looked like he was trying. Get to a penalty shoot out in any cup game, any round (we seemed to have a lot over a 4 year spell) and he'd be nowhere to be seen, was shit scared of taking them, face would go pale, be nervous as anything. Free kick 25/30 yard out he'd take every one and scored loads, but 12 yards out and only a keeper to beat he was a wreck.

Duffield never missed at 1st team, reserves and juniors level.
If I remember rightly there's one v Portsmouth in the 1989-90 season, where he badly scuffs it and it barely gets the goal line. He's saved by the keeper having flung himself in the other direction.

2 penalties v Portsmouth, both well hit and keeper dived the right way

Hamer—he strikes the ball so well. Hamer had the ball in his hands on Sunday, and as he gave it to Moore, my heart sank. Moore completely telegraphed it, and even a blind man on a galloping horse could see where he was going to put it.

We've definitely gone from a squad full of good penalty takers (Norwood, Sharp, McBurnie etc.) to basically no-one.

Moore has 7/10, Burrows has 4/4 (all last season) and after that no player has ever been a regular taker. Brewster in particular has a shocking record (scored 6 missed 4) and should be nowhere near the top of the list.

Hamer has taken (and scored) one penalty in his career, not sure why there's a clamour for him to step up.

Over the last 5 seasons, here is our penalty record...

2023/24
5 penalties. Scored 5.
Brereton Diaz (1)
McAtee (1)
Norwood (1)
McBurnie (2)

2022/23
2 penalties. Scored 0
(Brewster & Norwood)

2021/22
4 penalties. Scored 3
Sharp took all 4.

Also had 2x shootouts. Lost both:

-Southampton in EFL Cup - Osborn and Norwood scored. McBurnie and Brewster Missed
-Forest in Play Offs - Ndiaye and Berge scored. Norwood, Hourihane and Gibbs-White missed

2020/21

Lundstram Missed

Also had 1x shootout v Burnley in EFL Cup - Osborn, Berge, Sharp and Norwood scored. McBurnie missed

2019/20
1 penalty. 1 scored
Norwood

You'd have to hold his walking stick, SB, if he took a penalty now.
Nice feller, alus time for Hi! or a few words when he passed us on his morning paper walk whilst living Waterthorpe area.

Didn't he score one in a 4v0 versus Bolton too?
He scored 2 pens in that game. That was the match where there was a strong wind blowing towards the Kop. 0-0 at HT and as soon as we changed ends we were all over them. Agana scored straight after HT. The other goal was an own goal by Mark Winstanley I think.

Jesus, i can't remember if he scored a pen and you know the weather report! 🤣

Cos they are like sheep, who have seen someone good to it before on tele and think they will do it so that they look good too. It's just another example of a lot of footballers being a bit thick. Penalties have been taken and successfully scored for many many years, and upto recently, there was no trend to run up and down on the spot (what what advantage exactly?) before taking it. I suppose in their minds it looks good. Some even do it before they take a corner or a free kick. They probably now do it without thinking. Just makes em look a little bit daft imo.

I like to do it as I get up off the sofa on my way to make a cup of tea, really adds to the experience.

Even great players miss penalties every now and then, Haaland missed one against us last season, Kane missed the second 1 against France in Qatar.

If you have the confidence to step up and take a penalty (even after missing your previous one) then take the penalty, Moore has a good record on penalties so should take the next one, unless someone else is confident enough to take it off him.

Was his name John Matthews?

Scored 35, missed 12 in the league
My favourite was the one against Crystal Palace. Steve Wigley took one and missed. Old Col got brought on in the second half.
He showed him how to do it.

Not sure why YouTube gave this as a suggestion just now, never watched the penalties again since the game.
Why did Simmo go from diving full length to start with to just not going either way and just collapsing to the floor in sudden death?

Posted in the Kieffer Moore thread. But Burrows should be 1st choice for me.

Hamer understudy

Per others, Burrows or Hamer.
Moore, for someone who can strike a ball pretty well, is so scruffy with his penalties.
Even the one he scored wasn't great. Last night's was rubbish and probably cost us.
