I am a GK by trade playing for SU 18’ a Sheffield Poly in my youth.
I still coaching young GK’s here in the US.
As soon as I saw where Burrows was standing, I said to myself ‘he’s broadcasted where he will place the ball.
And if the Hull GK had PK training, he will have known immediately where to dive.
Short run up means placement.
Left footed PK taker on a wide run up means that unless he can do 90 degree body movement turn at the final stride as he approaches the ball, the ball is going in the direction he is facing.
This is what I mentor my young keepers to do: is the PK taker left footed and right footed?
Is the PK taker tacking a wide stance on his run up?
Can the PK taker open his body to play the ball in the opposite direction to his run up?
Alas, all my GK’s would have saved that PK today becue it is exactly what I tell them to look for.
The Blades GK coach should have seen that and forced someone other than Burrows to take the penalty.
Bad, bad telegraphed penalty.
