Who should take our penalties?

For me Hamer has the best shot on him so should take the next penalty . Its the second time this season we have had a penalty saved. Itwasn't an awful penalty from Moore but didn't feel he was going to score. I think Moore has done OK for us today, but wouldn't be my first choice for penalty taker.
Moores pen was terrible

Post match Wilder said he'd scored 9/9 penalties. Not sure that binning him off because of that one is sensible.
According to transfermarkt, before yesterday he'd scored 7 of 9. Missed one for Yeovil vs Gillingham in 2014, and one for Rovrum vs Shrewsbury in 2017 (against a certain Dean Henderson)

Missed one 10 years ago?
I suppose they aren't big number of pens to decide either way. Still think it's a bit typical forum knee jerk.

We seem to have been crap at penalties for a few years now (basically since Billy stopped taking them).

Moore had scored 7 in 9 before today, would keep him for the next one.
Hamer would be next obvious choice. Imagine Burrows could be option, not sure if he ever took pens at Peterboro
My concern was it wasn’t a particularly good nor confident penalty. If that’s how he takes them when he’s on a good run it’s concerning.
It lacked any real power and he kept it low so if the keeper guesses right he’s going to save it.

If the keeper had dived the other way😉 It wasn't hit hard enough if the keeper went the right way. If he'd done a Nick Blackman and waited for the keeper to go one way then roll it in the other corner it would have been the ideal penalty.
Keeper had always got a chance with that one if he goes the right way

The penalty yesterday wasn't terribly struck by any means. Decent power in the shot and it's placed well. The problem comes from the body shape as Moore is setting up to strike the ball. The act of "opening the body" as it's called (Thierry Henry-style), makes it very easy to work out where the ball is going. It's not inherently wrong to go to that side of the goal with a pen, but when you telegraph it like that it makes the keeper's job miles easier.

I would actually pick out Norwood's penalty vs Wolves last season as an exceptionally well taken pen. The way the ball is approached, makes it nigh on impossible to accurately predict where the taker is aiming for. Moore's approach of the ball yesterday was not great, but it was definitely not the worst I've ever seen. That award goes to Gibbs-White in the shootout vs Forest. Multiple stutters, during each of which MGW looked exactly where he was going to shoot. Forest's keeper may as well have walked to his right-hand post and just sat there, it was that obvious.

All that said, if Moore can address that iffy technique, he should be fine. I get the feeling he probably goes that side of goal a lot with pens, so perhaps should try going the other side next time to try and break the habit. If we change taker, then I know Burrows has scored a few, and I'd fancy Arblaster to take a good pen as well.

I'd say it's a good save, not a bad penalty.
GK has done well to get down that low

Not that I could but being a fan watching it, if going that way it should have been a further foot to the keepers left, properly in the corner with power. To be fair it was a decent enough save and I certainly couldn't have done any better but least it didn't cost us.

Am I the only one that thought Moores pen was actually quite good? Thought the keeper made an excellent save.
Not a terrible pen. Kept it low, in the corner, on target. Sometimes the keeper just guesses right and it was a decent dive and strong hand. Maybe Moore could have hit it with extra pace but I’ve seen a lot worse.

if he’s still confident I’d give him the next one.

Just to note that Billy missed a couple early on when he returned in 2015.
He was criticised at the time for just smashing them down the middle.

Acquire big piece of wood
Cut down to 24' by 8'
Draw line parallel to longer side in the middle
Mark off 5' in from each end, draw lines through that point perpendicular to one side
Cut off those 5' x 4' corners so wood looks like a big flat T
Stick it in front of one of the goals at Shirecliffe with the open bits in the top corner
Tell players to take pens at it
Whoever scores most often takes the pens

Can't beat a Harry Maguire penalty, lash it into the top corner. Though this shows he can vary it.

Get Tony Kenworthy or Peter Duffield to take the next one. Don't think Duffield ever missed, and he took a number of them for us.

I'm surprised Hamer hasn't taken one.
Would he do a skippy run up and gentle clever dink one, or just fuckin twat it? Hard to tell.

In respect of striking a football with power and accuracy , Gus Hamer must surely be our best exponent of these qualities.

Call me old fashioned , but I would have thought that these attributes would put him in pole position for the role of penalty taker and like you , I am surprised that this is not the case .

Ideally whoever takes free kicks or good corners. I'd pick Hamer as our taker but he might try and do something flash/clever. Otherwise Burrows. Or Steve Simomsen 😂

End of the day everyone should use Pembertons technique vs Blackburn and just smash the fuck out of it.

Out of interest, I wonder why players do that shuffle/run on the spot before taking the pen. I appreciate everyone has their own ritual but I can’t see how that helps the striker get set and as mentioned above to my mind allows more time for the keeper to spot the eyes.

Got to be Hamer. Any keeper getting in the way of his shot may end up in the back of the net with the ball or end up injured from the impact.

I agree, busting the net is best .
I'd like to bet if a ball hit with the speed Gus shoots at makes sit un-saveable. Let's say Gus puts the ball where Kieffer did, but at his pace. Can the goaly even get there in time?

Having said all that, I'm not a fan of the thread concept, based on one below standard pen from the new lad.

Cos they are like sheep, who have seen someone good to it before on tele and think they will do it so that they look good too. It's just another example of a lot of footballers being a bit thick. Penalties have been taken and successfully scored for many many years, and upto recently, there was no trend to run up and down on the spot (what what advantage exactly?) before taking it. I suppose in their minds it looks good. Some even do it before they take a corner or a free kick. They probably now do it without thinking. Just makes em look a little bit daft imo.

Other examples, players taking a deep breath and breathing out heavily when they are about to take a free kick, even though play has stopped for a minute or two beforehand and they have been stood there waiting for the wall to be set (they must think they are trained snipers who need to take a big breath, exhale a small amount and then hold their breath for upto 10 seconds as they pull the trigger).

Another being, the cutting of socks to show their calf muscles, and let's not thr forget the best of the lot.... a player comes on as a sub and instantly spits on the floor. I mean.... why? Swallowed a fly or something just doing a gentle jog? Dirty gets.

Loads over the first 3 pages saying Gus Hamer, and I understand why as he strikes the ball well.

But, why has he never taken a career penalty? Maybe he doesn't want to?
