Some players just hate taking them. I used to play with a lad on Sunday's that had played nearly 200 lower league games and played high level non league for 10 years or so. The proverbial could land a ball on sixpence was true for him, was head and shoulders above everyone every week and barely looked like he was trying. Get to a penalty shoot out in any cup game, any round (we seemed to have a lot over a 4 year spell) and he'd be nowhere to be seen, was shit scared of taking them, face would go pale, be nervous as anything. Free kick 25/30 yard out he'd take every one and scored loads, but 12 yards out and only a keeper to beat he was a wreck.Loads over the first 3 pages saying Gus Hamer, and I understand why as he strikes the ball well.
But, why has he never taken a career penalty? Maybe he doesn't want to?
If I remember rightly there's one v Portsmouth in the 1989-90 season, where he badly scuffs it and it barely gets the goal line. He's saved by the keeper having flung himself in the other direction.Duffield never missed at 1st team, reserves and juniors level.

Keeper saw it coming a mile off. No power = no goal. Very poor penaltyI'd say it's a good save, not a bad penalty.
GK has done well to get down that low

Not including shootouts...We've definitely gone from a squad full of good penalty takers (Norwood, Sharp, McBurnie etc.) to basically no-one.
How many pens in total was that please?Duffield never missed at 1st team, reserves and juniors level.
Didn't he score one in a 4v0 versus Bolton too?2 penalties v Portsmouth, both well hit and keeper dived the right way
You'd have to hold his walking stick, SB, if he took a penalty now.Duffield never missed at 1st team, reserves and juniors level.
7 in first team games. How many pens in total was that please?
He scored 2 pens in that game. That was the match where there was a strong wind blowing towards the Kop. 0-0 at HT and as soon as we changed ends we were all over them. Agana scored straight after HT. The other goal was an own goal by Mark Winstanley I think.Didn't he score one in a 4v0 versus Bolton too?
Jesus, i can't remember if he scored a pen and you know the weather report! He scored 2 pens in that game. Edit - posted before I’d seen some other chump post the same![]()
Cos they are like sheep, who have seen someone good to it before on tele and think they will do it so that they look good too. It's just another example of a lot of footballers being a bit thick. Penalties have been taken and successfully scored for many many years, and upto recently, there was no trend to run up and down on the spot (what what advantage exactly?) before taking it. I suppose in their minds it looks good. Some even do it before they take a corner or a free kick. They probably now do it without thinking. Just makes em look a little bit daft imo.
Funny how I allus remember him slotting and never missingScored 35, missed 12 in the league

My favourite was the one against Crystal Palace. Steve Wigley took one and missed. Old Col got brought on in the second half.Scored 35, missed 12 in the league
Surely Hamer, Davies, or O’Hare would all take a better penalty
