Was just looking on twitter and saw this. I was there at this game and was about 13. I just remember thinking why has their player been sent off? He didn't do anything other than getting continously smacked.

Those two tackles were perfectly acceptable in those days, would be red cards these days.

I was there that day, stood on the John St and Burnley brought the largest away following I have ever seen to this day. They had the whole of the Bramall Lane end and gangways A & B on the South Stand. We were losing with 5 minutes left, Hodges got one and Beasley equalised in injury time.

I was a forward but still enjoy seeing a good solid tackle in midfield or defence. It's a part of the game that is sadly being outlawed when a decent tackle is not dangerous.
They still allow the snidey stuff - that pisses me off

The game was started to see how it would go but we were soon losing. Game continued and we scored two very late goals.
Sure the replay saw Deane and Littlejohn given lots of racist abuse and when one goal was scored Littlejohn celebrated in front of the home fans.

The objective of tackling is to dispossess the opposition. So if you outlaw the good solid tackling that we used to see, then it is inevitable we will see an increase in the snidey stuff to compensate. Previously the snidey fuckers would have got their comeuppance with a good old fashioned cruncher. Now they get away with it and thrive. The snidey footballers are cowards and cheats and wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes in games like that one highlighted above.

Burnley were 2 up and with 10 mins left Hodges missed an easy sitter that hit the post. I was fuming with the casual way he did with the chance but a minute later he scored a superb goal to make it 1-2. Many Blades fans had left the ground by then. Then there was this sending offs and then in injury time Paul Beesley hit a lovely equaliser with a cannonball of a shot.

Which reminds me, watching the Arsenal v Palace game last night, the commentator said that the palace subs were given hot water bottles! Surely if they're cold then they go for a warm up!

Absolutely spot on mate! We used to jeer at foreign player for diving, feigning injury and pleading with the ref to get players sent off and now our players are as bad if not worse. There must be a university somewhere for synchronised squealing and grimacing!

I do mate, it made my eyes water for another reason.

I often wonder exactly when the changes to acceptable tackling first started to filter in. I also wonder who were the first British team to deliberately dive, surround the ref and and bay for players to be sent off. My guess would be ManU under Fergie, but I recall Franny Lee was a bit of a diving two hat for City.

I remember going to the game – the first cup tie I'd been to – but have no memory at all of this incident. I do remember going two-nil down and the late Beesley equaliser. Deane had I think been rested to the bench – he got a hat-trick in the replay, and then got a further hat-trick that same week at home to Ipswich.
