Where would sending Wednesday down next week rank?

I get loads out of it. With United it’s never dull and typically a white knuckle ride, with many highs and lows. I just think sending Wednesday down in their present state, when they’re already down, is nothing to get excited about. If you do then you’re setting a really low bar.

What do you consider to have been a high then if relegating your local rivals doesn't bother you ?

Boxing Day was put to bed in 2017. It was also 47 years ago. Most of the fans who sing about it don't remember it and a lot weren't even born. It was a third division game too. I get why they'd brag about beating us at Wembley but a third tier game from almost 50 years ago is the definition of tin pot.

We won't know where it ranks until we do it. There's lots of backslapping going on for something that hasn't happened yet. They don't get hammered often and we've got some brain-dead players who could quite easily get sent off early doors. We obviously should win but until we do, we won't know how good it will feel. The manner of any potential victory will determine how high it ranks. A boring 1-0 won't feel the same as a 4-0 hammering. A last minute winner to send them down would be a great story for the history books.

We'll see next week how it compares to other derbies. We need to win first

Since I was there at the BDM, it was definitely put to bed when we did the double over them in the old first division with the Bobby Davison game at the Sty. Those 6 points prevented them from getting any real glory that season.
Doing it in their own back yard was perfect.

On this game I shall be overjoyed if we can relegate them. I don’t think it will be a massacre since they have shown a level of resilience that ensures they don’t get completely dicked, despite not troubling the opponents goal.

Having said that. The pressure of a derby at Bramall Lane could well be a key factor and may be too much for the faint hearted.

So let’s be honest, it’s going to take an unrealistic combination of results elsewhere (currently in which the bookies are offering 59/1 to all come in) for us to NOT send them down. So the realistic chances are; we will send them down next week with a win..only that’s what I believe.

Question is; where would it rank for you? Does it finally put Boxing Day to bed once and for all? Is it on par with the finale of 89/90 on that sunny day with Leicester?

Personally, I can see both sides to it. Yes they were down before the season started, but when will we ever have a situation to directly relegate our neighbours on our own turf? This is once in a lifetime stuff that the police etc tend to avoid which is why we never play them last game/2nd to last game of the season - same goes for the other derbys around the UK.

I just looked and think it would be this combination at 17/1 to happen next Saturday and that is providing that Pompey haven't beaten Charlton when they play in midweek.

If Pompey do beat Charlton then it is only a 11/4 shot on the double.

for me 5 promotions to the top division, being top of the league, several cup runs, stuffing chelsea and spurs in the Prem. Relegating a non-entity doesnt rank anywhere near those.

I don’t understand the notion that relegating them would be irrelevant. In the grand scheme of things, perhaps so but football is so much more than winning or the end of season standings.

Having grown up around them, listening to their unfathomable sense of self-importance, listening to years of jibes about ‘little brother’ or Boxing Day or whatever else the deluded arseholes banged on about for decades, to have the opportunity for a first in the 130 odd year history of the Sheffield Derby is a delicious thought. Yes they’re shit, yes they’re going to get relegated anyway, but to have the opportunity to confirm it at Bramall Lane is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

I’m relishing the chance to see them fall in front of 30k+, laughing in unison at them and will never let them hear the end of it for as long as I exist.

The perfect scenario would be a game where we relegate them and secure promotion on the same day, but this is so unlikely I’ll take just relegating them.

Brentford and Fulham to most young uns nowadays are regular PL. How times have changed.

This for me. So was I. Duffy bouncing day was second imo. The significance of Bobby Davision night cant be understated. It was in the top division not a third division Christmas non entity game. They were riding high and had an outside chance of the title. Our six points stopped them getting the runners up spot. They had much better players of international standard. We were struggling near the bottom. The game at BDTBL we rode our luck but Deane who had literally got off his sick bed struggling with glandular fever scored the second and the shock waves in S6 started. They couldnt believe we'd won. Palmer started the narrative wait till we get you back to our ground. Pigs everywhere repeated it saying the defeat was a one off.

Fast forward to Bobby Davison night and Basset got his tactics spot on. Shame it was his team selection a year later in the Wembley semi cost us the game. Paul Rodgers had Palmer in his pocket all night. We outplayed a far better team all game. For me it has to be the best derby performance I have ever witnessed having watched my first in 1966. Add in Blades were in all four sides of the ground and the atmosphere was electric.

Pigs will never admit this game put Boxing Day to bed. That low division result is engrained in their DNA. We have to win by four or more goals for that to happen such is their warped logic. Deep down those who were there know it really hurt. A double and ultimately the end of their title dreams. More important they didnt lay a glove on us and to see Blades everywhere celebrating in the stands was the stuff of nightmares. Typically in true pig fashion they were on the radio scapegoating Woods within seconds of the final whistle. They had to endure it again an hour later as Yorkshire tv played the game. Bobby Davison and those flourescent away shirts are part of Derby folklore.

Admittedly I've not looked that hard, but I can't find any example in the football league of a team being relegated in February, add to that it gets confirmed against your major rival. It won't happen again, particularly not this early. We'll song songs about it for years to come. My reasonable Wednesday supporting mates have said that's what they're most worried about.

It might not be a difficult achievement to accomplish, it might not make much difference to our own season's outcome, but it's certainly something that will be celebrated, including by me.

I keep hearing this. They weren’t down before the season started. Yes they had a poor side but Big Chan was largely covering the losses, paying wages late but the players weren’t all excising their right to walk. Those really getting fucked over were the staff but no one seems to care about them in all this for some odd reason.
So they had a poor but solid squad, a few youth players who needed to be blooded around them, and they weren’t going to buy too many but were loaning at a decent level for the squad they had. He was covering that.
They forced him out, maybe understandably, but it’s entirely based on their ingrained sense of entitlement and because they genuinely believe they’re bigger than what they had. More spending, more losses that’s he’d have to cover and if he didn’t want to loads would fall over themselves to own them. Admin would sort it all out they’d soon be back to their natural place.
So here we are. They can’t cover their running costs with the attendances they get or the merchandise they sell. There are no big fish interested in them and they can’t afford the players they had.

This is on the fans and their delusional view of their club and its financial state.
