Phil Brown on defeat to the league leaders...
Blues Boss Phil Brown was surprised and disappointed to see his side’s unbeaten run come to an end, feeling that Sheffield United’s big players turned up whereas Southend’s didn’t.

Southend were soundly beaten by the league leaders, with goals from Simon Cox and Jermaine McGlashan not enough to prevent Sheffield United winning 4-2 at Roots Hall.

The defeat ended a 13-game unbeaten run in the league which stretched back to October and a defeat to next week’s opponents Rochdale, and Brown’s reaction to the Blades defeat was “more of surprise, more than anything else.”

“The game was set up for a top vs 7th, two in-form teams, but one team turned up and one time didn’t which is the surprise and the disappointment," he said.

“Their big players have turned up and maybe ours didn’t. But I have to say, the way they played they were certainly fired up for it and my team weren’t, and that’s my responsibility.”

The Blues made just the one change from the 0-0 draw against Swindon on January 2nd with Brown replacing McGlashan with Nile Ranger as Southend went with three in attack.

Brown admitted that maybe he was too concerned with what Sheffield United had rather than his own side, but that he could not legislate for the goals that his side conceded.

“We changed the system slightly to incorporate what they were playing and maybe I was looking at them too much.

“Maybe I was looking at the fact they had potency in their strike force, they had a back three and I wanted to do something about it. At the end of the day I can’t legislate for the goals, it’s nothing to do with the system.

“They are a good side, I take my hat off to them. I was disappointed in the way they reacted at times to certain things, but they were probably smarting from the fact that we beat them 3-0 at their place.

“The bottom line is four shots on target, four goals. I don’t like the sound of that.”

Dunno about sore loser, at worst you might accuse him of not giving credit where credit is due.

standard manager speak after being out played

had the grace to say our players turned up and we wanted it more
us scoring 4 from 4 on target is testament to good training

little dig at the end.....s4 blade you describe yourself well

He fucked up....and admitted it by the sounds of it?

Cant stand the bloke, but i see nothing wrong there?

I've always liked Phil Brown and his record is decent. Yes he is a bit cheesy with the fake tan etc but he's a proper manager who managers his team well on small resources. Much rather him that ex players like Ryan Giggs who said he would be "prepared to drop into the Championship"! I'd suggest you drop into League Two and earn your stripes. I digress but Phil Brown's Southend will probably be in the play offs come the end of the season and we've just spanked them! Wonderful stuff!

Presumably this: "I was disappointed in the way they reacted at times to certain things, but they were probably smarting from the fact that we beat them 3-0 at their place."
Not really sore loser but licking his wounds slightly?

Can't see any evidence of him being a sore loser in that to be honest.
Not even this?
"The game was set up for a top vs 7th, two in-form teams, but one team turned up and one time didn’t."
Hardly gracious in defeat. Faint praise from him at best.

This is the only bit I noticed that made him a sore loser

EDIT: opps already been quote:rolleyes:

Why? He's allowed to talk about his own teams performance as well. Maybe we played well and they didn't.

I wasn't there, listened on RS. From that commentary and the bit i've seen, they did turn up, we were just better / stronger / faster. Bit harsh on his own side to say they didn't turn up.

He will console himself with a couple of extra minutes on the sunbeds tonight and an extra layer of St Tropez!

No problem with that, admitted we stuffed 'em

"one team turned up and one time didn’t"

Dear Phil, please take heart from the fact you beat us 5-4 on aggregate this season and whilst your tactic of hoof it into the box as fast as you can to the big blokes and being best mates with the ref didn't quite work today, you'll probably do better against Donny next season, maybe. Southend actually looked quire good today and better than many.
