What is Wrong With Wilder?

Hecky should have gone after the 8 goal Newcastle defeat.
This for me is why I don't enjoy the Premier League and sometimes debates like this as it's all about perspective.

Newcastle were on their upwards spike at that point in terms of spending and what they could afford, we had offloaded N'Diaye and Berge weeks before and had 3 free agents playing for us, along with 2 loans. The value of our squad that played that day in terms of how much we spent in transfer fees (unsure on loan fees) was £69 million initial cost without any add ons. That is vs the squad value of transfer fees of Newcastle of £452 million initial cost without any add ons. How we are supposed to be competitive against a team like that is anyone's guess. Although they didn't play we had Seriki & Brooks on the bench that day, Newcastle on the other hand had 0 academy products of their own. This football malarky is easy when you can splash out close on 1/2 billion £

I still think there’s no way we can change manager with the even more inept owners..

This team completely lacks the fight and desire to see out games when winning, or to roll their sleeves up and get themselves back into games.

Does that flow down from Wilder? Not sure but even if it doesn't, he clearly can't fix it.

Im a wilder fan. But his tactics today were stupid.
Hjelde was the perfect guy for this game and wasnt used.
Poor
I said when Jairo went off for Davies we lost the game.

Then he takes off Peck and brings on Ollie you have no ball winner in the middle.

Just stupid tbh, and that's before we get onto playing Ogbene and Chong at full back.

I don't care anymore, I can no longer defend him after that capitulation. The trouble is, I just don't trust COH to get anyone better in to replace him. Damned if we do, damned if we don't. We're fucked.

COH won’t, it’s Wilder’s mate Bettis that is calling the shots and he’s no intentions of changing manager despite it being needed. We’re saddled with the two of em…

Bringing Ogbene on at RB was his piece de resistance today

Todays rip roarer from our manager, 'we should have been out of sight'!

Well there it is then! Play 2 up front & we might have a chance to be.

He's a flat track bully who isn't anywhere near what he was.

And it's sad.
its very sad i know we will keep wilder for the start of next season but for me hes not going to take us any further absolute shadow of the dynamic manager he was 10 years ago i really think the premier league has ruined a once fantastic manager

Issues I have

I cant work out the tactics, one up front suggests a defensive approach yet we are anything but solid

Played OK first half but any goal we score playing like that will be on highlight reels for decades because its all fancy flicks and miracle passes, no basics

Wrexham looked woeful in first half but then hit us with most basic tactics of long ball down the side and quick cross and after that dominated. Our response was to bring on like for like apart from reducing average height of the team.

He can't go all Bill Big Bollocks after Brum after getting justified criticism, and then after serving up that shower of shite not expect any blame!

We are dull to watch when we play how he wants us to, and most teams habe his playbook sorted

I wouldn't go as far as saying we're fucked but I agree with your sentiment.

A sizeable amount of the fanbase won't cope with Wilder going and won't give anyone else who isn't massively proven a chance, how many of us are confident that the owners would make the right choice to replace him, none of us know for sure what the financial situation will be in the summer apart from the loss of parachute monies......

It's far from an ideal situation. I'm not advocating getting rid of Wilder and we can certainly done worse but I do feel his best days are behind him.

When Hjelde is on the bench and Soumare isn’t even in the squad.

Now I'm not having that. Some things to note:

  • We were not winning the game when Ogbene came on, and were losing when Chong came on
  • Davies was playing so deep that we were effectively playing three at the back, hence those two were de facto wing backs, increasing attacking options when (checks notes) we were not winning
  • The only options we didn't use were Faxon, Hjelde, McGuinness and Cannon. Only one of those offers any attacking option at all, and he's a pure 9. We had one of those on already, and brought another one on. You can't play three at the same time and taking Bamford off for Cannon would be crazy. Yes you could try Cannon instead of Ings but that's still the same argument really

There's a lot that you can criticise Wilder for, and I'm usually the first to do so, but given the options he had there's really not much else he could have done

Changing manager is literally pointless. Because we'd be where we were last summer. We haven't invested (knowingly) in the infrastructure of the club, and so until we do so, I would trust Wilder the most to hold the ship as steady as possible. But we aren't likely to be competitive.

Why?

Our issue is, we're far from the finished article. That's why we create but are wasteful. Then, we lack the depth like-for-like, to keep the same tempo. Chong, Blaster, Ings, Davies. None bring the same fitness as who they replaced. The try, they are honest pros, but they have all had significant injuries in their careers. I won't take any of that "useless wanker" or "their on the beach already" crap. That's just laziness that shows the individual poster up. They are clearly trying.

The issue now, is that we're unlikely to have the resources needed to address the issues at hand. And what positives we do have (Cooper, O'Hare, Hamer, Seriki, Brooks, Peck) are likely to go.

Like I say, this isn't so much the opposition fighting their way back in to games, but us fading out of them. There's a difference. Combine that with easily knocked confidence and it explains why we are where we are.
