The accompanying thread on Danny Wilson got me thinking about those players/coaches who have made the 'conversion' on the road to Heeley.

I get the impression that when people have gone from Wednesday to us it has worked out better than the other way around.

Ones that I know have gone this way since the 70's include Derek Dooley (probably unique in being genuinely respected both sides of the city), Danny Wilson (signs are good), Terry Curran (total failure at United), Bromby (did ok by us I thought), Alan Quinn (so so) and a few I can't remember.

In the other direction there was the legendary John Harris (manager here, scout there), Imre Varadi and a few odds and sods on loan like McGovern and I am sure a few others too.

It's not so much who the people are/were but the relative success they had (or didn't) at the second Sheffield club they served.

Thoughts?

Frank Barlow coached at Wendy under Trevor Francis. Teddy Davison was Wendy's keeper in the 1920s (smallest keeper to have been capped for England) and our manager from 1932 to 1952. Theres loads more players who have played for both sides

Anyone that sees the light and comes to the red and white is always welcomed by me. This is what wound me up in the summer.

So everyone of them is a success. Ryan France included, he chose us over the pigs and didn't even bother playing for us.

You might want to include Cresswell in that list

Just an amazing coincidence, but I only found out earlier this morning (whislt googling Gordon Banks, as you do), that Davison even played for Wedmesday, nor that he was a 'keeper, or that he played for England, let alone that he was only 5' 7".

The connection with Gordon Banks was that he was managed by Davison at Chessie, in his second spell as manager there, having managed them before he managed us.

Felling a bit like Silent's apprentice this morning :-)

There was also Ian Porterfield who has been one of our more successful managers since the mid 1970s. And I thought Jeff King (signed by Porterfield) was also quite good.

Terry Curran did have at least one blindingly good game or us - away at Stoke in the FA cup (I think 3rd round replay) where he took their defence apart. Still can't believe we ended up losing that match.

Alan Warboys ........ shite for both Sheffield clubs

Bernard Shaw sold to Wolves and played in the UEFA cup final before moving to the pigs was decent for both Sheffield teams

George Underwood, Walter Ricketts, Joe Cockcroft are the three in the long list I am thinking of. I remember my late Wendy supporting Uncle telling me that we had signed Joe Cockcroft from Wendy in the 1948-49 season (we got relegated at the end of the season). The Blades fans werent happy that we had signed a 37 year old from the unclean and to make it worse, he missed a penalty in a vital game

Jeff King was 100% pig, even scored on Boxing Day, but crossed over. I remember people being wary until he scored a last minute winner at Crewe that provoked scenes of wild celebration.

I think, not certain, but I have been told that Mr King has always been the only one missing from their 26/12/79 wankfest reunion.

Imre Varadi & Simon Stainrod both started as pormising youngsters with us, who much later in their careers signed for the grunts. Varadi only made a handful of appearances befre we got the 'big' offer.

makes me laugh ,150 years of history and all they can celebrate at hillsboro massive is a win at home in division 3 , against a team that got relegated to div 4 a season later, thats up there with any liverpool european cup remembrance evening

David Ford played for both teams. Was seen as a prospect at Wendy but by the time he reached us his star had faded.
He also held the record distance for throwing the cricket ball at my old school.

Since this thread was made over a decade ago, some more to add to the list:

SUFC>pigs:
Marvin Johnson
James Beattie (Pulis' assistant during his stint as their manager)
Danny Batth

Pigs>SUFC
David McGoldrick
Caolan Lavery
Gary Madine

And of course, Paul Heckingbottom (playoff winner with them, did summat here, can't put my finger on what though...)

Was Hecky a player or coach?
