How many games did we fail to win when Lord Wilder took charge all those........................................months ago.

Imagine if we continued unbeaten reched the Prem and got hammered for 8 games with no win.

That’s a radical idea. What does the rest of the defence look like? I don’t see either of them doing the marauding overlapping wide CB role, so do we have those two with JOC sometimes carrying through the middle, or go with a four? And would that be JOC and Bash giving us height and defensive solidity at FB or Baldock and Stevens giving us attacking threat from FB?

Considering how we’ve gone from never giving the opposition the ball to leaking goals constantly, and missing Coutts to glue the whole system together, should we go back to a basic well-drilled 4-4-2 / 4-4-1-1 while we get some reinforcements in?

‘Everyone back (except Coutts) solid defensively’ version

Moore
Bash Stearman Wright JOC
Baldock Lundstram Fleck Stevens
Duffy
Clarke

‘Going for it late on’ version

Moore
Baldock Bash JOC Stevens
Brooks Duffy Fleck Thomas
Clarke Sharp/Don
Obviously there needs to be someone in for Fleck for the next two games, perhaps Duffy deeper and Brooks in the defensive lineup and Lundstram stays in the attacking version.
i reckon stearman is a good enough footballer to do the right cb role of the 3.. having the experience of both would be invaluable.. that throw in situation simply wouldnt have happened with Wright on the pitch

i’ll elaborate further.,
we don’t play a classic three when wright is playing if anything it is a two with wright acting as a sweeper for the two.. this is what allows the end cb’s to maraud forward as wright and a midfielder usually coutts would drop in.. wright also filled the gaps in the inside right/left positions where most of our goals have been conceeded recently by either shuttling the line across or more often than not plugging the gap himself
defence is more about organisation and positional awareness than footballing ability..
Bergen??

Well we were and still are trying to play hard ball signing Leonard.

If he does not sign in January after all this time and effort then our approach to transfers needs to change.
If Wilder rates Leonard so much I don't understand why any other clubs have come in for him. I'm not knocking Leonard or owt because I don't really know much about him.

We want overpayment and we want it now!

Gerrumoverpaid and gerrumin.

LOST!- One sense of perspective. Last seen four weeks ago. Reward if found (paid in sour grapes).

Because you think we'll easily make the top half, or because you think I shouldn't complain if this is merely a season of consolidation?

If the latter then I agree, I've no problem with a mid-table finish. A few weeks ago though there were more than a handful of fans who assumed the league was ours for the taking. They have been sorely disabused of this notion.

If the former, then fair enough. Since Coutts' injury, I don't see us as more than a mid table side.

You're of course perfectly entitled to complain but it is the 'spend some money' thing that gets my goat.
As if spending £10m would guarantee still being top. We have plenty of threads about the pigs yet a lot on here can't see any lessons to learn.
They have spunked about £60m (fees and wages) and only have a midtablle position to show for it.

Some people will not accept that spending money guarantees nothing.

I guess none of us realised how important he really was. His loss coincided with injuries to both RWBs and some of last season's other players dipping a bit (JOC, Billy Bash).

Fair enough, you'll not see me whinging about the money spent. Our recruitment in the Summer left us short in cover but I don't think there was a whole lot we could have done about it.

I didn't really expect anything more given the players out.

We're paying a huge price for not getting the players in we needed in summer.

Our first XI is good, but after that we're scrabbling around a bit. They've all been playing out of their skins. As soon as we lost Coutts, it weakened the team a lot as a unit. It's no reflection on Lundstram, but they were so used to playing as a team, that when someone's form dips or a player is out, everyone looks a bit poorer.

January can't come soon enough.

You hit the nail right on the head. Our first XI can match any team in this league. But the backup/wider squad is not Championship standard. A player like Lundstrum is going OK but he's young and been at Oxford recently, so is not the finished article. Others like Samir, have been disappointing (and maybe are not at Championship level, perhaps explains why he finds himself back in L1?).

The board need to look at this in January. Chris needs the support to make this happen.

absolutely spot on and it is WHY Wright works in the defence for this team.

CW may want all 3, Stearman included, to bring the ball out of defence, but for me, Wright just sat, watched, read the game and moved accordingly.

It made us tick and solid in defence - as did Coutts in midfield - they both had rolls that made us very good - something we have now lost.
