We need to talk about Sydie Peck

I thought he played well

Agree…..think we have to realise what we have regards Sydie.

Most of the time he just makes himself available….often a really good first touch….then he makes an easy sideways pass.
Some might say he doesn’t do a right lot….he hardly creates chances and never scores, also he’s a bit slow so often mistimes his tackles against quick players.

However Sydie is more of an “enabler”….he always shows for the ball, good at keeping possession allowing other players to produce the killer/ high risk pass.
These type of players are often not rated by fans as they are underwhelming but managers and even players/ colleagues really value this type of player in the team.

Really think Sydies effectiveness is often down to who is is partnered with and how well our others players are playing.

Peck had a good second half, bit like the rest of them, bar Barrie, sorry the lads L1 at best looked well out of his depth I thought he wanted replacing at half time!

One of the rules of S2 fandom is youngsters who come through our academy actually get the worst stick and the least appreciation.

The lads only just turned 21, if he comes out the other side of the chaos of the start of this season he ought to get immense credit.

Edit - our youngest starter again today BTW
The fact that those that stayed behind to applaud the players on the post-game lap sang his name and no one else's, should tell you it's just a weird bunch of morons in this forum who don't rate him. Fans who actually go to games really really like him!

I'm guessing this gaggle of miseries don't go to games, don't have enough attention in their everyday lives, and are desperate for attention.

He's shit.

I'd love to be convinced wrong.

If he was a youth player in a League Two team he wouldn't get game time.

He offers absolutely nothing to a Championship team.
Wow. He is far from shit, what a strange comment. Today, was his best game this season because he had support.

His energy and commitment shone through, and spread to others.

I do not understand the animosity to him. I think he was our youngest player, today?

We stayed to clap the players off, and Peck got the best response of all. He offers aplenty for us, a Championship team. IMO.

Its funny how different people see games in different ways.
He's far from shit, as some people keep insisting!
I commented to family in the UK that he seemed more reserved today and didnt try to get forward as much. As usual, he never shied away from looking for the ball but kept it simple. Pretty much every pass found a teammate, albeit the passes were safe (short, sideways, backwards) but this allowed others to get into the game and Peck was usually the starting point for our attacks.
I thought he worked well alongside Soumare and both offered some protection to the defence resulting in the majority of their efforts (save for a nervy final 5-10 minutes) being from distance and offering little to no threat to Cooper's goal.
A solid performance from him today.

Yeah, he's young.

That's the only thing he's got going for him.

If he doesn't improve quickly he'll be playing for Tranmere in a couple of seasons.

Tidy win today but it was little to do with Peck.

That’s a bit excessive. Peck, along with many other players, have been massively underperforming all season.

One decent performance doesn’t completely absolve the terrible start we’ve had, but it’s a step in the right direction.

There's no doubt that he has shown some ability and he has potential.

However he never scores, very rarely creates chances and assists and gets overran in midfield as his positioning is poor due to lack of experience. He's certainly not a tough-tackling holding midfielder either.

I don't see any particular issues with his attitude on the pitch but Wilder did say last year that 'He thinks he should be playing for Real Madrid and England'. Ok that's tongue in cheek but perhaps he thinks he's already made it?

He needs a strong Souza-type player next to him and better players around him, and its not his fault that several of them have been sold/gone back.

However being ruthless in the cold light of day in my opinion he's presently not adding/contributing enough to merit selection for the first team though would be interested in what others think.

No, we don’t.

Assume you’re taking about Barry as this would be a bonkers comment to make about Peck.

Seriously this lad needs taking out of the team now. He's a weak link, 12 months on he's probably regressed where a talented youngster should have progressed. He might be a good lad, kiss the badge and be a dream to manage - but he's ineffective. He's easy too knock off the ball, he concedes possession far to easily, he can't shoot or dribble and he isn't a creative player or a midfield general.
We maybe light in CM but their are others (Soumare) that are a better choice right now.

I feel sorry for him. Last season he showed up, snapped into tackles, got forward and disrupted things. Now he ambles about playing 10 yard passes across the backline and thats it. That is down to how he’s being coached

Peck was below average today but anyone looking at that tonight and thinking Peck is the issue, clearly has an agenda...

I find it amusing that Peck and Wilder are red rags to a particular section of our fan base.

He's currently at risk of descending into "safe" midfielder territory. Tidy but not especially good at anything in particular at both ends of the pitch. His shooting is atrocious. I thought soumare's touch and progression showed peck up a bit tonight and showed that long term him and reiderwald should be the 2 in the middle. He's still young though.

Another one that needed hooking. Kid looked knackered. Options were Soumare and Matos

Soumare limped off the other day and was knackered after a monster shift. Matos should've come on even though he's looked an out and out stopper so far. Do we have an academy central midfielder that is anywhere near?

He’s not regressed….hes playing exactly the same as last season.
Everyone was raving about him and I was saying his strength is helping us retain control of the game by constantly showing for the ball, good 1st touch and keeping possession with his sideways passing. He never plays many forward passes or risky defence splitting passes….he left that for Hamer to try.

He’s a decent player….thats it….not the best not the worse…he’s more of an enabler to allow other players to do their stuff.
So in a team with good players playing well Peck will fit in well….and look a top end Championship player.
Whereas in a team with poor players or players out of form then he’ll look nearer league 1 standard.

He plays too safe…that’s his style and it’s worked well to date because he’s been able to rely on Hamer to try defence splitting passes.

He definitely has.

Fair enough. But he was none to clever last season in a winning team. Playing in a losing team really exposes him.

I honest think that he will go on to make a premier league player

Always shows for the ball
Puts his foot in
Retains possession better than most
Looks to play forward balls wherever possible and if not knocks it across the line
Would look so much better with Souza along side him, but this season expected to do it all on his own.

An excellent footballer who we are very lucky to have.

Great balance and ability on the ball, good passer and great vision but lacks goals and can be guilty of being a bit overly-ambitious with his flicks from time to time. He's young though and will improve on this hugely.

Second only in terms of ability and work rate to O'Hare at the moment imo.

His biggest problem is that most of the current team are so far behind him ability wise it's untrue. Criticising him when we have arse gravy like Cannon, Barry, Ogbene and the worst defensive three in living memory sums up just how mad as a fan base this club has made us all in the last few months.

Take him out of the team and they'll be a clamour for him to be re-instated within two weeks imo. Who the hell replaces him for what he does on the ball? Soumare may make a player but he's nothing more than a battler at the moment.

utb

An utterly baffling statement?

If he was Spanish, called Antonio Santos and a few inches smaller no one would even dream of calling him a battler.

He's a very nice cultured footballer. Always looking for a pass. Lovely slip through for Burrows today.

He's hardly Leigertwood is he?
