Ways to make the play offs fairer?

I don't really agree with the play-off concept. We play a 46-game season to decide the best 3 teams - just leave it at that. I'd love us to win the play-offs, but it can't be right that a team can finish with 20 more points and not go up.
If we have to have them, then use a system that gives the team finishing 3rd more advantage. Maybe adopt the Rugby League system, or something similar.

always said dont have penalties , 3rd v 6th and 4th b v 5th , both one off home games a reward for being higher , and after extra time the higher place club goes through on league merit same in the final . if its 3rd v 6th if it ends a draw , highest placed team wins on winning more points , over 46 games

penalties are too random a goalie can go the wrong way and the ball hit a foot and stay out

this actually decided a shoot out play off in italy s 3rd division

I have said this before, but I think we can learn from Aussie Rules/Rugby and do this:

3rd vs 4th, 1 game - winner to final
5th vs 6th, 1 game - winner plays loser of 3rd/4th game for place in final.

This makes each place worth more than the one below (in terms of 2nd chance and/or home advantage).

I don't like the playoffs personally (I don't think any Blades fan does) but I can see that they bring value to the game and keep seasons interesting for more teams than a simple 3 up system does.

To be honest I didn't expect anyone to come up with a much better solution, but I really like this idea. Especially the fact that each place higher you finish has a distinct advantage.

This exactly!
