I thought the whole point about Hamer is that he does both well - he's creative yes, but his Coventry heatmap had a lot of touches in front of defence as well?

For me, Souza is like Kalvin Phillips without the LUFC baggage; he's there to disrupt in midfield and I thought he did that well yesterday. From what we've seen from Hamer so far he doesn't quite have the accuracy of an on-form Norwood (though who does?) but he has that bit more quality linking up with the strikers.
Souza and Hamer are both box 2 box.

Hamer is an upgrade on Berge. Has good vision and drives well with the ball as well as making good passes, albeit over shorter range than Norwood. He tired in the game though

Souza really is a bit of a disruptor / enforcer. He needs to be fitter and that will come, whereas Hamer gets sloppy when he tired, Souza had parts of the game passing him by, a bit like Berge

Norwood was getting a bit of flack yesterday but needs those around him getting into the right spaces for him as well as moving the ball a bit quicker at times. I think it’ll blossom a bit in the coming games

It is to be hoped that Hecky and co. can get more out Souza than the levels of performance he has shown so far .

At best these have been mediocre , characterised by long periods of anonymity and a worrying lack of commitment in certain situations . His challenge for the header back into the box which led to Everton’s first goal was feeble in the extreme and there were a number of other instances where greater determination on his part could have produced a better result .

Imo , such shortcomings are more to do with a player’s mental approach to the game than rather than fitness levels or game time and as such , can be a tougher nut to crack .

To a large extent , they achieved this with Sander Berge and I sincerely hope they can have a similar affect on this player and if he is to be an integral part of our team , it needs to happen sooner rather than later.

Thought he was poor today but most, it seems, think he had a good game. Hardly touched the ball in the first half. You can tell there’s a player there but not sure why people think he had a good game?

I have to say I agree; I thought I may be being harsh, but for someone with his size and stature he should be dominating that midfield area more and not letting large chunks of the game pass him by? But recognise that he needs time to get up to speed with things.
Not surprised with the 3 giants in the Everton midfield...

He ran the game at Forest from 30 mins to coming off with cramp - City it’s hard to judge as his role was quite different
I thought he was quite subdued Saturday especially first half improved second but I don’t think he expected the physicality Everton offered

Hamer was box to box at Coventry, and not an attacking midfielder (from what I gather).

this guy looks incredible. you have as upset as i was to lose berge, you have to wonder was it a masterstroke. because we sold a player that would he be a fringe player. Hamer Souza Mcatee Norwood might have been ahead of him in pecking order

I really like the look of him but there's a lot more that he needs to show. The promising thing is, he's shown an array of talents in flashes. He's shown he can read the game, get his foot in, progress up the pitch and knock it short and long.

Now it's about putting it together consistently over 90 minutes (fitness still lacking) and putting his mark on games.
Still seems to pass him by a little bit. Sure it will come. Big test today against Maddison.

I think you're right here. He's building his fitness with games but also trying to get up to speed with the English game which is more physical and faster than many other leagues. So it will take some time until we see him at his best.

He's showing flashes as you say, but we need it for full games, it'll come. Looks a classy player

He looks like a Premier League footballer, which is promising. 6'3, strong, athletic.
We don't look a soft touch with him in there which is progress on some of the midfields we've put out in recent PL seasons.

JLT and Thomas impress PH in training.

JLT and Anel overlapping, JLT throw ins, with Archer, McBurnie and McAtee scoring.

Hoping arrogant Spurs fans take the blame for losing against an attacking away team.

Adventurous Hecky line up. Up and at ‘Em from the start. 1-3 win for blades.

Yeah the midfield looks much more athletic and dynamic now as we have players there in Hamer and Souza that are good on the ball, strong and can put a foot in. We have more physicality and protection for Norwood/ McAtee.

Our central midfield is evolving nicely

Mmm

We will see

Not seen much that really impresses me about Souza but early days

Big test for him today - big test

Just some things he needs to work on. One time he misplaced a pass backwards.

Instead of tracking back he crouched on the ground with his head in hands... While the ball was still in play!

Definitely wears his emotions on his sleeve tho which isn't an overall bad thing as long as realizes still has a job to do!

Good article, seems a top lad.

Must say though, the stats don't quite marry up to the eye test yet for me.
He looks promising but he needs to be doing a lot, lot more. He's not really dominated in any of our games yet.

To be fair, he admits himself he isn't quite 100% yet. He knows he can do better.
