VILLA CLOSE IN ON NAUGHTON
O'Neill ready to splash out on Sheffield Utd defender

01/11/2008

ASTON VILLA boss Martin O’Neill leads the race to sign Sheffield United superkid Kyle Naughton.

The £6million-rated defender, 19, is being chased by a host of Premier League clubs.

O’Neill made a trip to Bramall Lane last week to watch him and has money to spend in January.

£6 mil? wouldnt have thought we'd be able to turn that down and it isnt a bad move for kyle. i'd be very suprised if he was here come february.....unfortunately

If we had to sell him I'd ask for more:D

Personally i'd tell him to bugger off.

stick a £15million price tag on him.

in this financial climate i think £6 mil is a decent offer and i wouldn't really want to stand in the young lads way. PLUS we could then see the return of a proper right back GEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRY!!!

Kyle is not a proper right back?

We dont need to sell him so why take £6million?

well i wasnt being serious with the proper right back statement.
i don't know whether we need to sell or not i just £6 mil is a good offer, obviously we all want him to stay for and keep playing as well as he is for 10+ years plus thats not realistically going to happen is it?

I think he will be told he is staying for his own good, like Jags was when Wigan were after him. Moving too soon can sometimes ruin a young lads career.

I hope someone took him to one side a few weeks ago and told him straight that this was going to happen... given him chance to have a think about what he wants, possibly told him that if he did want to move, it'd be the summer and no earlier.

If I were Kyle, I'd think... I'm a Blade. My family is in Sheffield. I'm 19 years old. I have a place in the team. There's plenty of time for playing in the Premiership. If I time it right I could be a Phil Jagielka. If I'm not ready, I could end up like Michael Tonge (not even on the bench yesterday.)

From the club's point of view, we have no reason to sell. They slapped a big contract on the kid a while ago as far as I know and he was happy to sign. £6 million is a lot of money, but if we were to go up this season, would we manage to get a Premiership right back for that amount?

I'd also be careful about the message it sends out to other youngsters looking to get into the team. Do they really want to see a kid that went through the ranks flogged as soon as he was any good? Or when they're sat around being ballboys, do they want to see a player that's been through the exact same process as they have and acting as an inspiration? Dunno.

Yes i dont necessarily disagree with what linz has said above i'm just going to offer up a counter argument.
with comparisons to players, jags was obviously a success and excelled after turning down a big money move, but there are others such as woodhouse and wayne quinn who we had gd offers for who never achieved anything once the move didnt happen.
From the clubs point of a view, i think there would be £6 million reason to sell. SUFC PLC is basically a property development company that just happens to operate a football club, and with the housing market and credit crunch a big offer for any player would have to be considered.
As for inspiring youngsters, the message come in, do well, and you'll have the chance to move to a big club, play european football, earn HUGE money and get in the england squad, Theo Walcott for example, could also be inspiring to many.
As i said not necessarily my thoughts, just a counter argument for you to discuss

Wayne Quinn is a slightly bad example to use to support your argument. He used to live across the road from me and it seemed that if he wasn't getting pissed, he was going down to KFC on Woodseats.

He did secure what should have been a big move for him in going to Newcastle but he didn't perform and despite a couple of loans, faded into obscurity and ended up running a caravan park.

Curtis Woodhouse is another one who's got a bit of a reputation for having to sleep in people's front gardens after a heavy night too.

Both of those support the idea of staying grounded and not getting ideas above your station.

Seen it all before, young players chase the money at Premiership clubs but for every Theo Wallcott there are dozens of Francis Jeffers'. Would it really be a good move at this stage in his career to be at a premiership club playing the odd reserve game when he can play first team football and learn a lot more here ???? I'm betting Mellis and Askham never play a first team game at Man Ure and Chelski.

I think it will be a case of looking were we are in the league come Jan.

If were in the hunt for an Automatic place i can see Blackwell not selling any key players.

We are now in the very fortunate and enviable position of not having to sell any of our players when any clubs come calling just because we are desperate for the cash. I think Naughton would be silly to go now, especially to a side like Villa.
If the interested parties were Arsenal or Man United, both of who have managers with a proven track record in nurturing young talent, then fair enough, but Villa?

Having said that, all this talk of big multi-million pound transfer for a lad who is 19 years old and has started less than a dozen games for so far is ridiculous.

Lets keep him for the season and let him develop at his own pace and shield him from all this transfer talk and keep his feet on the ground rather than letting it all go to his head and his game and possibly career suffering from it

Villa for Naughton? Read the title and thought it was a swap deal: David for Kyle! I'd want some cash too, though!! :D:D

I can't believe that there's people who want to flog him, are you insane?

If we are going to build a team we need to keep our best players. Even more we need to keep our youngsters who've come through our academy and are Blades themselves.

I would be extremely pissed off if we sold him as we have no need to sell him. We don't need the money, we need good players.

Spot on.

Although we are still a club that will sell if the right amount is put forward unfortunately.

I don't think anyone really wants him to go, but if a player wants away to go and play in the Premiership, there's nothing we can really do to stop it. All we can do is make sure we get a good price.

I get the feeling the club don't want to sell, with the media black-out and and massive contract they made him sign.

At the end of the day, the ball is in his court though.

That's exactly the same with any club, the main issues lie when the "right amount" is unrealistically low in the opinions of fans.

Can you think of any recent examples of this being the case?

Villa is the best place to go these days for young English talent.

Agbonlahor
Young
Davies
Milner

To name a few.

um... this is all speculation, BB. United have, if anything, shown ambition here by apparently trying their hardest to keep hold of the lad.

If I was a young player I'd want to fully realise my potential with the club I started at.

How can these players want to go sit on the bench/playing reserve games when they can be an instrumental piece in a team that has massive potential to go places.

By all means once you are proven and you fully expect to be playing 1st team football at one of the big clubs then it's time to think about moving on.
