The view from Sunderland is that we play Leeds on Monday and if we lose and Sheffield United win - the gap between us and you lads is 8 points. Leeds will be miles ahead and for Sunderland it will be play out the rest of the season and see if someone cocks it up near the end. That's all we could do - try and win as many as possible and hope that Leeds famously bottle it or Sheffield United implode. Neither seems likely but you never know.

Sheffield United fans will be tuned in and you'll clearly want Leeds to win, which is understandable. So Monday could be effectively where the season all but ends for us as far as the automatics is concerned - thats how close it is for us. We'd still probably be 14 points clear of 5th so we'd be playing to simply consolidate 4rth in the last 13/14 games, with one eye on the play offs.

However win at Leeds and that puts the cat amongst the pigeons - so Monday is a crucial game with huge ramifications for the whole top 4 and it's our last game this season against the top 3. So Monday will probably and realistically determine whether it's a top 3 for the rest of the season or whether there is still a top 4.

For balance, I live near Sunderland and most of them think we have a fantastically strong squad and expect us to see out the rest of the season top 2.

Some even held this view at Christmas when we were against the ropes squad wise.

Of course, some of them are fucking gobshites 😅 but they tend to be the thick ones or the ones that don't go to games

We never want Leeds United to win at anything so I hope you smash the fuckers.

I didn’t know Sunderland were playing Leeds on Monday and doubtful that I’ll be watching. Monday night is like Thursday for football, just a crap day for games to be on TV.

Anyway, I notice your comments are just about Sunderland, Leeds and the Blades, but not Burnley and they just don’t concede let alone lose games.

You play Leeds this week, but we play them the following Monday. There’s likely to be some ups and downs before the season ends and even before Feb is out.

To be fair my op was taken from a thread on their board about us and Burnley.

I dont fancy burnley to go up. I think that Leeds and Sheffield United are the 2 who not only rarely lose but also score goals - you 2 are the 2 to catch. We can catch burnley as we are just 2 points behind them but catching burnley isn't the game here - as they are not in the top 2. One of Leeds and SU has to be caught and this weekend is a big weekend realistically for that. Results clearly have to go the right way for you and if they do then it's realistically over for the top 2 for us.

I just cant see, for example, Leeds and SU losing say 4 or 5 of the last 14 when you have only lost 3 or 4 all season.

All IMHO of course. I'm not being negative just realistic. Clearly though you keep on going - and hope!

Sorry MBH, you couldn’t be more wrong on us all wanting Leeds to win - I’d rather eat glass personally but that’s what growing up in this part of the county will do to you.

You obviously don’t understand the feeling here. Sheffielders….especially United fans can’t stand Leeds.
Using our heads it’s
1st choice score line…..a draw….so you both drop 2 points
2nd choice A Sunderland win would be hilarious…and would put them under so much pressure for when we play them next week.

Using our heart and passion/ instincts then all Blades will be wanting a Sunderland win….we’d find it absolutely hilarious.

And to be honest if we play like we did tonight….we’ll have a great chance of beating them next week …even if they’re in good form.
We’ve got some excellent individual quality players but not really clicked this season.
Well tonight we actually showed clear signs of clicking….we made Boro look so poor…a clear division below us.

Every football fan in the country , apart from those in with a shout of promotion in the Championship, sees how Leeds fail as the only purpose of the Championship.

You may not fancy them but they’re above you and in form that they’re just not conceding goals at all. Pressure is on all 4 sides, less so for Leeds as they do have a buffer. But Burnley are right on us. They’re 3 behind us with a superior GD and they’re 2 above you but +9 goals.

Clearly I'm not aware of your feelings for Leeds - Sheffield Wednesday - yes I'm well aware of your feelings for them - similar to us and NUFC.

I didnt realise that Leeds were disliked so much by you and thought that you may have been fairly ambivalent towards them.
They're our second most hated team after pigs ;)

Ambivalent we are not.

Like us - Burnley haven't been in the top 2 for weeks. their defensive record is clearly extremely good and in fact almost record breaking - but again - they haven't been in the top 2, like us, for weeks. whenever we win - everyone else wins - whenever Burnley wins - everyone else wins. It's very frustrating and at the end of the day you get the message that LUFC and SUFC are ruthless even when they dont play well.

We still have to play Burnley away and Leeds at home.

Burnley might be like you but you have to get past them and one other to get autos.

Personally I’d rather you beat Leeds and us win at the weekend…

Burnley were 2nd last week although they had played a game more than us.

Even putting that to one side, it's hardly a given that we'd why then to win. They are, after all, only 2 points ahead of us.

Gonna be heartbreak for two teams that miss out.
The way these things work is that an outstanding team over the season misses out cruelly on automatic promotion with about 90 points and confidence is shat for the play offs, and some non descript team like Bristol City or the piggy bastards sneak into the last play off spot and end up winning them.

Hadn't though about the maths before and naturally wanted a Sunderland win. If we beat Luton we'll be top going into the game and a Sunderland win keeps us top.

But yes, a Leeds win would put Sunderland further off the top two which is I suppose what we want. A draw would be decent too. Sunderland win tightens it all up.

Do I detect a modicum of arrogance in with the ignorance here ?
The implication being we would prefer a ‘dirties’ victory to enhance our automatic promotion ‘chances’ of coming 2nd
My understanding of the table is that even if we lose to Luton we will be at least 2 points above Sun’lun.

‘Hadaway and shite, marra’

After sleeping on it, I think a home loss might give Leeds fans the jitters. Add some red cards or injuries and they might accomplish their biggest choke yet. We win the league while they drop into the play offs.

People talk about Leeds as though they're invincible but they're only 5 points off 3rd.

I’ve had conversations about how Leeds look unstoppable, and then noticed we’ve won more games than them and have amassed exactly the same number of points up to now - which is mad given how often there’s seemed to be a 50-50 split on whether we’re crap or not.
