There are a few reasons why Sheff Utd fans hate Leeds.
1: The unfair Leeds bias both from the national media and local news channels (which are all based in Leeds).
An example is when the Sheffield clubs gain promotion to the Premier league thereās a 5 minute news report about it.
Where as when Leeds are promoted to the Premier league thereās a separate 30 minute promotion special about itā¦..itās so bias.
Another example was the 1991 league cup final Sheff Wed v Man Utd on ITV.
Sheff Wed won and literally 3 minutes after the match endedā¦.Yorkshire TV ended the transmission and showed āwar of the monster trucksā programme.
Where as in other parts of the country ITV showed the full celebrations interviewing the manager and players etc.
The Wednesday fans complained and Yorkshire TV apologised, we all know if it had been Leeds playing the whole afternoons TV would have been re-arranged
to show the match build up and post matches interviews etc. So itās a general Sheffield (including Wednesday fans) that have noticed the discrimination.
Iāve noticed the same how the national media have this ālove inā towards Newcastle often calling them āa giant of a clubā
Where as Sunderland are always understated, classed as this provincial club, down on its times with good support.
If clubs like Bolton or Blackburn drew a crowd of 30K, they would receive massive publicity calling them a huge club etc
Sunderland get 40K every match and the media never bat an eye lidā¦..they donāt care so thereās little recognition of Sunderlandās fantastic support.
Like Sunderlandā¦ā¦on a national level Sheffield doesnāt receive the credit it deservesā¦..itās where organised football started.
In the mid 1870ās half the organised clubs (about 60) in the world were based in Sheffield, itās the 1st place where they had organised league and cup football.
The 1st place ever, where fans were charged money to watch matches. The 1st knock out tournaments well before the FA cup.
Sheffield is the true hot bed of football where as West Yorkshire is a rugby league hotbed.
For example Leeds United were formed over 50 years after Sheffield Wednesday were formedā¦.yes 50 years later.
Until the mid 1960ās Leeds United had no history and poor support..they are an older equivalent of Wigan Ath...a rubgy town that eventually played football.
2: Feeder club for Leeds
The United hatred is stronger than the Sheff Wed hatred because over the decades weāve had a few big crowd favourites that went to Leeds.
The big one was Tony Currie in the 1970ās, but thereās been Mick Jones, Alex Sabella, Keith Edwards, Brian Deane etc.
3: They generally have an incredibly arrogant dislikable fan base.
Probably different now but Iāve met a few Leeds fans in the 90ās and 00ās and they talked like they are one of the biggest clubs in Europe.
Iāve found that their arrogance and delusions has been astounding, almost shocking.
So when they are struggling I think back to those types of fans and smile thinking itās karma.
