those of us who were there often recall what a day the darlington promotion party was, but i have never seen any video footage of it, does any exist?
There used to be a big photo at the lane of the crowd about to erupt after one of the goals, i used to look at it for ages and reflwct on what a great day it was.
It doesn't matter what division, the memories of united actually achieving something never fade

No video, but took this picture on my kodak !

Is that the photograph showing the fans behind the goal, just before I think it was Bob Hatton scored? If so, I'm on that photograph :)

I was stood next to a Mackem, who had decided not to watch Sunderland in a meaningless end of season game miles away, but instead decided to go to Darlington because 'it might be a bit more interesting!'

Just before the final whistle he said he was leaving to try and get away quickish, he then turned around to us few he'd stood with and said 'the most amazing, surreal experience I have ever had watching football!' :D

I would love to see that game if anybody has any footage, unfortunately before my time but my father does remind me of it at least once a season. I'm sure those of you who attended the game still talk of it now and have good memories, must have been a great game.

The other one he always mentions is when we beat Leicester City 5-2 away.

It's actually quite interesting that people assume there would be some footage!

Us oldies can remind everyone that this was the age when to have a video recorder (remember them?) was the height of techical sophistication. We had just gone from having 3 TV channels to the unimaginable excess of 4 and if someone had said a day would come when you could take videos on your mobile phone, the reaction would have been "what the fuck is a mobile phone?"

The only football games that were recorded were the ones that would be shown on MOTD that Sat night or on ITV on Sunday* , maybe 5 or 6 each weekend. Given that 4th division games were hardly ever shown**, video footage for games that season is very rare. Darlington was not videoed.

* with the odd exception when local TV news went to the expense of videoing a game - see Boxing Day 1979.

** To the best of my knowledge 3 of our games in 81-82 were shown on TV:

10/10/81 Port Vale A ITV
6/2/82 Colchester A MOTD
24/4/82 Bournemouth H ITV

I was at both but sadly I don't remember that much about the Darlo game - just that there was so much encroachment on the pitch I wonder how they managed to complete the game. Can't remember seeing any Darlo fans at all - just Blades on all four sides of the ground - can't be right but that's about all I can remember - that and the plethora of fancy dress going on.

I played cameraman that day. We were rich by then, we had a cine camera and a ZX81.

I have some 8mm film from feethams. I haven't watched it for nigh on 30 years, I don't think I shot too much of the actual play, although I did get the second goal, and the aftermath. More crowd footage than anything else. I suppose I should dig it out someday and get it converted to dvd or whatever, providing that I can still find it. :)

Think we can add the game at Valley Parade as well. Edwards (with his elbow strapped up with what John Helm called Tennis elbow) and Neville scoring in our 2-0 win.
I still have that game on video somewhere and it include just about the worst ever introducing job by Derek Dougan. He's as wooden as you could possibly get and his introduction and interview with Ian Porterfield is comedy gold.

Ah yes, you're right, I missed that one.

81-82 was the last season YTV had his own football coverage. The following season they had Granada's programe (introduced by Denis Law), so we only got coverage when we played Lancs teams - hence our 3-2 defeat at Wigan was televised.

Get it converted Shazzler, that would be quality footage.

I never had YTV down as a "he" Dazzler. Although, thinking about it, the coverage looked like it was done by a complete Cock end.

Indeed.

Our only other televised game in 82-3 was the home game v Preston. The local derbies v Doncaster, Chesterfield, Huddersfield and Bradford were ignored.

Bloody hell, got that one somewhere as well.

Porterfield had gone a bit mental at the time and I'm pretty sure we had Edwards, Morris, Towner, Young (oh dear) and Cunt Curran all on the pitch at the same time.

That was in the Lincoln game on 7/5/83. As I recall we played with Trusson and Edwards up top, Towner and Curran on the wings, Morris in centre midfield and Young as centre back. We lost 1-0

The Preston game was our first home game on 4/9/82 and did feature Young and Edwards up top and Morris and Curran on the wings.

Towner was signed on loan on deadline day in March 83 as Curran was about to sign for Everton and "Tiger" was his replacement. As it happens, Curran changed his mind and we had both of them...

Alan Young suffered concussion just before half time but had to carry on for the rest of the game as Morris was already subbed due to an injury. After the game Young couldnrt recall anything that happened in the 2nd half

One of my clearest memories was of the Darlington barmy army being escorted out of the ground before kick-off, presumably for their own safety. They subsequently appeared on a garage overlooking the ground but couldn't be heard. And there were Blades in all 4 corners of the ground - there were Darlington season ticket holders but I'm sure that it was pay on the day (incredible) and, having arrived so early, the Blades bought all the tickets before the Darlington fans got a look in!

I probably went on one of the official supporters club trips which would have included coach and a match day ticket.
Too far back in the recesses to recall - most of the away trips I did then were on the coach or the "football special" train - and boy, did they save the "special" carriages for us footy fans?

More M'boro fans there , than Darlo fans , my mate Steg got his flag nicked by em , but boy did they get a shock when they tried it on outside the ground .

To be honest, just telling him he played shit would just about cover all the halves he managed to play for us.

I do have distant memories of an overhead kick against Oxford being his sole contribution to us. Could be wrong though.

Astonishingly he got 13 goals for us including a HT v Boston in the Cup on 14/12/82.

That overhead kick was at the Lane on 19/3/83.

A bit of an Andy Gray for the 80's then.

That was a great goal. We won 3-2. He got a hattrick in the cup against Boston as well.

Young has a book out. There's a chapter or so about his time at United.

A chapter? An actual full chapter? Bloody hell, that must be one shit book (or a lot of very short chapters).

One decent goal, a hat trick against none league opposition and constant injury, do not a full chapter make. Chris Guthrie will probably bring out a suite of memoirs and we'll be three volumes out of 16.

Young was the Helios of his time, Grecian...

Oh, as for TV coverage, don't know if it's still there but a full video of our 3-1 defeat to Barnsley in the league cup in 1982-3 used to be on YouTube.

Much as I am loathe to defend the ever injured one, but his strike rate was not that bad, 13 goals in one season when he only played about half the games. He wasn't far off a 1 in 2 rate.

He got 6 in the Cups, 5 against lower division opposition.

7 in 26 games in the league doesn't look so good (though of course it would be outstanding in our current side!)

Fun fact - King Keith scored 23 but was not top league scorer. He got 5 in each cup, and Colin Morris got one more in the league.

Trivia time: Edwards was top league scorer in 5 of his 7 full seasons. Who was the other player to out score him?

Would Hatton be the other?
If not Hatton then I suspect it will have been in his first spell with us - but can't think who
