We had a mini bus take us to Darlo, we met at 8 o'clock and called at an off-licence and knocked them up and filled the mini bus up with booze. We were well gone by kick off can remember being on the pitch at the end of the match. We were going to stop at Leeds for the evening and I think Leeds had played at home that day so we decided against it and someone said why don't we go to Whitley Bay, I agreed thinking it was close by. God what a great night we had, fantastic place pub after pub full of women, I think we all pulled that night. I should have been at work the next day at 6 we didn't get back to Sheffield until half past ten the next morning

It would be good if Roy could do a 'Retro View from Darlo' . Darlington fans who were there to make a contribution on how they saw the day. Due to the few that were there it mighty be the shortest 'View From....' we've seen.

As it's a retro I'm sure Kitson will get blamed for something!

I got Jeff Kings shirt after the game. They came back out in the Yellow and Brown away strip and after a scum and tug-o-war that lasted about 10 mins I got the shirt. Crazy day, so many memories.

The thing is about these games in the past where there was actually no TV coverage only people that were there can really have memories. No hangers on or glory boys. I remember more of the journey up to Darlington and before the match than the actual match itself.
On the way up there were numerous hire vans with blades fans in the back - no seats just partying in fancy dress - god knows how people weren't killed falling out the back. then in the ground - remember it backed onto the cricket ground - and those of us there early playing football before the game.
In a strange way it is that season that makes me proudest to be a blade - great support despite the disappointment of being in the fourth tier - Strange but the only time I have felt the same was the second half of this season. i can't think of a season where I am entering feeling more positive. As I live in Northampton only a couple of weeks until I see whether it is well founded

I was just thinking about the cricket ground and the football on it near the football end. I also remember loads of Darlington fans coming from the far end and marching towards us with a purpose. When we eventually all saw them we all started to run at them ant they scattered. Just a few continued to chase them but most went back to our game.
There were people up floodlights and police telling them to get down. as soon as someone got down and the police were rattling their ear someone else climbed up until the police decided it may be a good idea to put someone at the bottom of the pylon.
On the way up even some cars were in fancy dress. I also vaguely remember a fan dressed in united tracksuit with number board and another in full kit making a substitute with the linesman and it was number 9 held up. I'm sure Edwards looked puzzled and almost went till the united bench jumped up.
He also had his boots pinched at the end and appealed for them back on the radio the next day. He got them back but bought a pair for the guy who returned them as I remember. I'm sure we never left until Porterfield Edwards and others came out to thank us for support.

I played cameraman that day. We were rich by then, we had a cine camera and a ZX81.

I have some 8mm film from feethams. I haven't watched it for nigh on 30 years, I don't think I shot too much of the actual play, although I did get the second goal, and the aftermath. More crowd footage than anything else. I suppose I should dig it out someday and get it converted to dvd or whatever, providing that I can still find it. :)

Any joy finding this footage?

loads? I thought there was about 12 of em.

It was only then that I realised that I was stood on their end.

Indeed.

This site shows all the games shown on ITV

Our only other televised game in 82-3 was the home game v Preston. The local derbies v Doncaster, Chesterfield, Huddersfield and Bradford were ignored.

Link doesn't work for me, so unless the game it's showing is v Wigan (a), that's another to add to the (very short) list of televised games in 82-83. Think we lost 3-2 from 3-0 down against a very young Wigan team.

Sharrowblade, let me know if you find it and I will convert it for you

Obviously you and me remember it different then.
well it was a long time ago and my long term memory isn't the best.

I do recall a big group stood on a pile of builders rubble or something outside the ground whilst we were taunting them with chants of "you're supposed to be inside"

Feethams wasn't the biggest of grounds, but it was packed that day. I saw 4 forlorn figures walking along from the main stand towards the cricket pitch end, with the taunts of "We are sitting in your seats" ringing in their ears. Never seen or experienced a situation like it, where an entire ground was taken over by away fans and with segregation and ticketing now in place, it will never happen again.

Will do, currently away in Spain but will have a rummage through the attic and see if I can locate it on my return
attic !! attic !!

I am assuming this is code for a, climate controlled, fireproof, under guard, state of the art security facility to store the precious footage .....

Talking of Blades on all four sides, does anybody remember Crewe away that season, when the home fans were stuck in a tiny visitors end while us Blades filled the rest of the ground?
And didn't Jeff king score a late winner that day as well?

Happy days....

I fell over and cut my elbow when that goal went in.

I'm not sure Sharrowblade fully grasps the level of interest in his attic treasure...

Said it many times, we were in seats in the main (only?) stand that had season ticket holders' names on them that they'd sold to TRAWW.
