Academy POtY - Marcus Dewhurst.

Young POtY - David Brooks

Sheaf Valley SUSC POtY - Mark Duffy

Essex SUSC POtY - Mark Duffy

SUSC HQ POtY - Chris Basham/Leon Clarke (joint)

Mark Duffy incidentally was at the Handsworth SUSC awards last night. Here he is receiving his award from Steve, a great man in his own right.

I have started to put together the end of season review and my initial grades (could change with 3 games to go) would agree with above.

Duffy at a push just ahead of Fleck, Baldock, Basham and then maybe Clarke as an outsider with O'Connell. Those 6 have been the outstanding players for me. Blackman just outside that group as are Stearman who started season poorly but has ended well. Stevens the inverse. Sharp and Brooks done it in patches but neither played enough for me.

If Coutts had carried on and stayed fit he might have won it comfortably.

The entire team were at the awards, as it was the supporters club awards evening.

Handsworth alone has 1,400 members, combined with others and I'd say you've got a decent sample size.

But how many vote?

Why have these scattered awards from various 'supporters clubs' that replace and effectively erase any proper, undisputed supporters' award?

Every season ticket holder should be able to vote. No reason why not, and it would be incredibly easy to organise.

Yes that's right. Meant to say Steve from Handsworth but my brain's turned to mush and I wrote it all in the wrong order. Apologies.

They're not individual stand-alone supporters clubs, they're branches of the main SUSC.

As for how many vote, I couldn't say for sure but needless to say a sizeable portion. Exit polls for general elections are only based on a few thousand respondants and they tend to be an accurate representation.

For the record, I'm all in favour of putting it to a generalised vote as well.

In that case shouldn't all the votes be combined to decide the winner? Or is that what's happened with Duffy winning, with 'SUSC HQ' being separate from the rest? Either way, it should be clearer.

Each branch votes for their nomination and the leading nominee becomes the official POtY. SUSC HQ I would imagine is the smallest, comprised mainly of the administrators for the group.

Funny the second top goal scorer in the league isn’t in with a shout of the awards?

Only 1 player has scored more championship goals than Clarke and that’s the 10 million pound Vryda.

Not bad considering Clarke doesn’t take penalties!

So how do you become a member of SUSC so I can vote for a POTY in future? It’s not right that only certain people get to vote out of 27,000 fans?

It's the SUSC supporters player of the year, so representative of SUSC, not the entire fanbase.

He's not taken a single penalty has he. Very noteworthy. No one's scored more from open play than him. Diogo Jota and Bobby Reid have the second most on 15, 3 less than Leon.

As I said in another thread, he should be right up there because the workload on him this season has been unbelievable.

Good point, probably down to the fact his form dropped dramatically. To be fair the amount of gilt edge chances we've laid on a plate for him this season he should have had 30+

Well I'm a bit confused because earlier on today I was told he wasn't as good as Billy "blindfold " Sharp

You must be confused, because you forgot how yesterday you got shown up whilst trying to slag him off yet again.

Going back to our recent League 1 days under Clough and Adkins I believe player of the year was given to whoever turned up on the night...... nice to be spoilt for choice for a change.

Thought I’d have a look at how his total compares. Our top league goalscorers at this level from 1996/97 onwards (because that’s as far back I can check via soccerbase), current squad in bold.

Beattie 22 (2007/08)
Clarke 18 (2017/18)
Brown 16 (2002/03)
Marcelo 16 (1998/99)
Bent 15 (1999/2000)
Gray 15 (2004/05)
Beattie 12 (2008/09)
Cresswell 12 (2009/10)
Henderson 12 (2009/10)
Katchouro 12 (1996/97)
Lester 12 (2003/04)
Sharp 12 (2017/18)
Walker 12 (1996/97)
Asaba 11 (2002/03)
Devlin 11 (1999/2000)
Shipperley 11 (2005/06)

Some things I’d note from that:
  • Sharp only needs 1 more out of the remaining games to pass the other 6 on 12 goals.
  • In the 16 seasons I looked at, we’ve only had 2 strikers reach double figures in 5 seasons other than this one (96/97, 97/98, 19/00, 05/06, 09/10).
  • I probably still don’t give Gray enough credit for that 15-goal haul. For me selling him was an important part of our success the following year, when Shipperley topped the charts with 11.
  • That Clarke total is bloody impressive, and really I don’t think we talk enough about how remarkable a season he’s had.

Only one 20 goal a season striker in the past years 20+ years is pretty terrible.
