At present fans are waiting anxiously for new signings to lift the club away from the relegation fight.
We see all the departing players which NC told us to expect but we have seen just the modest loan signing of Paynter, sound but modest nevertheless.
The announcement about the prince's arrival was deliberately timed after the end of the previous transfer window "so that deals could be done without other clubs getting a whiff of new money in the air" or words to that effect. I never understood the logic of that when for weeks Weir had been signing players for peanuts under instructions to reduce the overall wage bill, but hey ho. The arrival of the prince and the careless comments of one of the younger McCabe's have encouraged thoughts about "game changing" expenditure on new and better quality players and the whole football world knows that now.
The Financial Fair Play Rules do affect the amount of funds allowed to be spent this month and no doubt the club have explored ways and means of inflating the relevant income figure for when the time is ripe to create the bigger budget. We have moved away a number of players and presumably there is a headroom within the budget to sign at least a couple of players now, even without new money. There is a case for waiting until the summer when the choice of players available is much greater I suppose but we have a real fight on our hands to stay in this division.
The point of this OP is to plead to the club to communicate as far as possible what the strategy is. This will presumably help us fans to understand the conditions our manger is working under and it might encourage fans to be patient. It is now the 15th January, half way through the window. Clearly we didn't enter the New Year with any players lined up. Some fans are beginning to doubt whether there is any new money available yet or even whether there ever will be!
Obviously it is not possible to spell out chapter and verse about the full details of our finances, but it is possible to say enough to indicate why we have not been more ambitious right now and broadly what to expect and when. I think most fans are expecting at least a couple more significant signings this month. Maybe many fans were underwhelmed with the Paynter acquisition and expect better. If that is not going to happen then the fans will need to understand why. It is not just about the number of signings, it's about the quality, and if that is not forthcoming we deserve to know why, particularly if there is a financial reason. If there is limited activity or if the signings are modest it can affect NC's image with the fans and we all have a vested interest in him succeeding with the fans onside.
This is also the start of the era of the new club ownership and we all need to be singing off the same songsheet. At present we fans are not quite sure what the songsheet has on it; is it a blockbuster musical or a bit of a gig in a village hall?
