United or Wednesday

In the darkness and cold, Sheffield Wednesday fans descended from the Far North, killing all in their path and reanimating the dead.

:)

There's definitely a series of (cheap, not very literary) books and a straight-to-DVD movie in that.

Ahem. Native Americans. Please. It's 2017.......

I assume that you really know that the Washington Redskins are an American Football team.

Fortunately, PC hasn't gone as far as making them rename one of the biggest franchises in the NFL.

The Washington Native Americans wouldn't really work!

Their anthem "Hail to the Redskins" would be a bit difficult to sing as "Hail to the Native Americans" as well!

It would be like making us sing the "Slightly Oily French Fry Sandwich" song!

Hello everyone,
Wasn't quite sure where to put this but I was looking to get your help.
I am currently a college student in New York and have been given an opportunity which requires me to live in Sheffield for a year. I love football/soccer (don't hate on the word, it originates from Oxford University) and have been a member of New York Red Bulls since its foundation as well as playing all my life. Anyway, one of the main things I am looking forward to is getting a season ticket at one of the Sheffield clubs, either United or Wednesday, but I am having trouble deciding who to go for. When I was looking into this last year it seemed an obvious decision to choose Wednesday due to the Championship football on offer although that benefit is likely to be equalled as United look set to be promoted.
Why am I here wasting your time on the forum? Basically I want to get the fans opinion to try and persuade me and give me a reason to choose their club. Due to other sports teams I support in the US (red and white colours) and the fact Bramall Lane will be a bit easier to access from where I am staying I have decided to ask you guys first.
I appreciate any advice given though please keep comments constructive, saying things like they are pigs (I know you call each other that) and hillbillies isn't an argument. Match day experience, fan culture, players, history would be preferable.
Thanks

Hello NYkr, welcome to the forum.

Simple advice is go to both grounds and see which team, set of supporters or atmosphere takes hold of you.

My experience was growing up in Sheffield in the 70's and I nearly became a Leeds United fan. They had a great team at the time and as a 9 year old I loved the white kit and the stars including Lorimer, Jonny Giles and Billy Bremner. My next door neighbour took me to my first live game. Sheffield United v Leeds United in the old First Division. It was a Tuesday Night at Bramall Lane and from the moment I reached the top step of the Bramall Lane stand I was hooked. Not with Leeds but my hometown club, the sights, the smells and the atmosphere. It is unique and very special.

I go to games with a mate and his son, they are Scottish, when they moved to Yorkshire I got them tickets for the Lane and they were hooked from day 1 and are proud Blades.

The other friend I go with is from Hull. His friend went to Uni in Sheffield and they took up one of the offers of cheap tickets and another one was hooked.

The guy who used to sit behind me in the family stand was an Oncology expert at the Uni, he was from Ohio.

It will get into your blood, I assure you.

Both are clubs with biggish grounds that play football, but the character of the clubs is very different. Whilst fan bases are made up of lots of individuals, they do take on a persona. Wednesday do seem to think they have a right or entitlement to sit at the top table and they sing arrogant songs about owning the city. Blades generally are a more humble self depreciating lot with a very typical dry south Yorkshire humour.

The thing that is truly special is when you first experience the Bramall Lane roar. It can come out of nowhere, a bad refereeing decision, a great piece of skill or even a very average player simply giving it 100%. When you hear it, it will make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck.

What is truly special at the moment, is in a modern era of overpaid foreign stars, our Club is managed by a Sheffield United Fan and captained by one. They have bought the heart and soul back to the club and it is a truly special time to be a Blade.

Can't really add to what's already been said but the Blades are just a great club to support. Right now we are on a roll and it's hopefully going to be carried forward in momentum to next season. I'm probably a bit older than you (66) but go with my brother, son and (soon hopefully my grand son!) but we would be delighted to take you to Bramall Lane and introduce you to the experience. After that you'll decide but I'm sure once you've been you'll be hooked on United. Let me know if you want to take up the offer.

The thing to bear in mind about United is that they always, ALWAYS let you down. Often in the most unexpected and farcical ways. It's never boring at the Lane but for the sake of your health I wouldn't get too attached.

If you want to support a team with guaranteed success (cup wins, Premier League & European football, no track record of final-day relegation misery) I'd invest in a young persons railcard and nip over to Manchester.

That should tell you all you need to know ;)

Oh hell, I had a feeling you might say that, something about the confidence of your writing I suppose. I used to tutor at Sheffield University (School of Architecture).

They got rid of me in pretty cruel circumstances.

Despite the 'political' drive indeed the over-arching political 'correctness' & environMental 'religiosity' of your tuition, just know that they are a bunch of people who don't dare say boo to a goose when it comes to defending their colleague's positions when it comes to labour rights. because they are kept in a state of fear for their jobs.

I take it you are doing part II or are you a researcher? IF you need any advice, you can post me a private message using the envelope icon at the top right corner of the page. Honestly, I think I know too much for the job ;).

Support us - we're better designed (at least our stadium was never a charnel house).

Give it time, it'll come. Wasn't there some hoo-ha last year about trying to get Exeter Rugby club to drop the "Chiefs" bit of their name. I'm sure someone was going down the "offended on behalf of" & "morally outraged" route.

Fucking hell. Are you trying to push a foreigner out of the country or are you just being a cunt?

Sending a visitor to Oakwell or the fucking Keepmoat. You sadist.
Showed this to my colleague who is a Barnsley fan and he said "yeah but Barnsley and Oakwell is sick"

Architecture

My wife and I went to Sheffield Uni (about 40 years ago). The Arts Tower was (and still is I guess) the tallest building on campus. The story was that it was designed by the architects department, and like all tall buildings was designed to sway a bit in the wind. However, apparently the architects themselves were given the top floor because in a high wind it swayed so much that stuff used to roll off your desk up there! A case of "you designed it, you can live with it!".

The other thing about the Arts Tower was that it had a paternoster lift that just went round and round and you jumped on and off. When we showed new students round we always said make sure you get off at the bottom though. Then, to demonstrate what happened if you didn't, we'd get on at the bottom, stay in right round the bottom and come back up standing on our heads in the lift! Quite a few believed us that the lift turned upside down at the bottom!

A good thing about Sheffield in those days was that there were no real issues between students and the local population. We all went out and enjoyed ourselves together. For 3 years I shared a flat with 2 local guys who were draughtsmen. In many U.K. cities back then there was almost no integration, and clubs would have separate nights for students and locals. I don't know how Sheffield is now with integration, as the 2 Universities have grown so huge. I hope it's still the same, as I think the welcoming feeling of being a part of the community (Blades and beyond) there for 6 years has meant that since then it has always felt like my spiritual home.

Another big night for us tonight in our march to infinity and beyond!

I found Sheffield United later in life after not really following anyone, I went with Mates to all the different grounds around the area, starting with a wet and windy 2 all draw at Rotherham at MillMoor, think it might have been Swindon, but cant be 100% just knew it was a bit rubbish, then went to the shambolic and awful mess in S6, saw an other draw and really was not impressed in fact left half way through the second half as it just felt rubbish really did not feel comfortable, and then I did not go to a match for a while, had some friends who were blades said come to a pre season friendly, thought why not and I remember clearly walking down the steps of the Kop and feeling the hairs on my neck and arms go up, the atmosphere was awesome for a pre season friendly and the lane just felt like home and the Love affair started, Nothing is like walking down the steps of the Kop on match day at the Beautiful Down town Bramall lane.

As a side note I did go to a match at Oakwell as well, but now with the counselling and proper time to reflect I have managed to erase that dirty episode from my mind.

Once upon a time, when my younger son was very small, his primary school (kindergarten) class were among a group of kids chosen to have a halftime kickabout on the pitch at the Sty during a home game against Norwich (?). They must have come last in some school competition or other. So I went to watch, and sat right at the back of the North stand with a friend of porcine persuasion.

From right at the back, it was impossible to ignore the microphones hanging from the roof at regularly spaced intervals, the length of the stand. These mics were being used to recycle and amplify the noise of the "crowd" as the teams came onto the pitch.

As they used to say in M*A*S*H, that is all.

t would be like making us sing the "Slightly Oily French Fry Sandwich" song!

That would be a winner on the songs thread with the new PC version

You inhale my senses (with a non carcienogenic vapour)
Like 4.55 litres of Magnet (safe weekly drinking limit of 21 units = approx 1 litre per day maximum)
Like a packet of nicotine replacement patches (unbranded)
Like a good pinch of fresh air (snuff is deffo banned)
Like a night out in Sheffield
Like a low fat, high in polynsaturates fried sweet potato wholemeal granary sandwich
Like Sheffield United
Come and give me the appropriate portion size.
Ooooooh!

It might just catch on...........

Is there anywhere you can still get Magnet?

I loved the stuff and used to frequent the Dog & Partridge on Trippet Lane regularly for a tipple until they replaced with Wards several years ago. Can’t seem to find it anywhere these days. I assumed they stopped making it.

Just a thought for the OP, being a New Yorker………. Would the obvious choice not be the New York Stadium, just in the next town over?

Another option would be to buy season tickets for both United and Wednesday. Policing requirements mean that we don’t play at home at the same time so you would be able to get to every game and would have one to go to pretty much every week.

I think you need to talk to JonnyRed(WCFC). He's a Worcester City fan who came to Bramall Lane last season for their FA Cup match, and now we can't get rid of him!!!

You should also speak to Jim Phipps on Twitter and get his opinion.

This was an amazing moment. Gives me goosebumps thinking about it.

Thought it was Batman Begins, not The Dark Knight?

What is the Batman blades reference? Seen the films but don’t remember this?
