They're all too busy arguing with each other to push that approval button! o_O

Whilst over here all is calm, peaceful and right in the world.

Seeing as you have a bit more time to savour things Red n White I thoroughly recommend you having a look through the thread entitled 'Old photos for no reason whatsoever...' ..its quite a fascinating little trip down memory lane brought to life by the good folk on here who saw them, they have good memories on here!

What's that now, summat (something, NYkr) like 160 pages?
Allus (always, NYkr) intended to get reight (right, NYkr) into it but I'm leaving that to the closed season (off season, NYkr) since I've not got enough time to wade through that with the attention it deserves. :)

You using the same moniker on there as here?
There may be spies about

May I suggest you apply with the user name, SWFIUA?

It would be an abbreviation for, "Sheffield W*dn*sd*y Fans Information for Uncertain American"

Can't go wrong with that :)

Should work a treat! :)

I am late to the thread, but first of all, a warm welcome to Sheffield (when you arrive).

A few things to note, that I think will stay with you for the rest of your life.

Location - more students come to Sheffield to study, and decide to stay, than any other city in the UK. The reason?, well there are plenty and I am sure some will strike a chord with you, but one is location. You will be living and studying in one of the UK's largest cities, and yet a short 15-20 minute drive and you are in the Peak District national park, one of most beautiful areas of countryside you will find anywhere.

Beer and pubs - we have "craft beer" (from kegs, or cans) in trendy bars and traditional pubs, but more importantly we have "real ale", beer that is pulled by handle, to draw the beer from barrels. Over the last decade, real ale brewing and production has taken off all over the country, and if you try, and like, this type of beer, you will have a wonderful year because there is always something new to try. Sheffield is the capital of real ale brewing in the UK, we have lots of small breweries producing award winning ale. We have proper pubs serving proper beer.

Lifestyle - linked to location and beer and pubs, we have everything you will need on your doorstep; shops, pubs, bars, trendy bars, restaurants, cinemas, theatre, night clubs, live music venues. As a student, you will find certain pubs and venues geared towards you and your fellow students, one of them, "The Leadmill", is a legendary live venue that is a magnet for students at the weekend, where they play classic British pop and rock music.

Football - the reason you are on this forum. The beautiful game we call football, originates in Sheffield. The worlds oldest football club is Sheffield FC, the worlds second oldest football club is Hallam FC, the worlds oldest football ground is Sandygate, the home of Hallam FC, a 10 minute car ride from the city centre. The worlds oldest football trophy, the Youdan cup, was created and contested in Sheffield. The rules of modern football, as played all over the world, were written up in "The Plough", a traditional pub, opposite Sandygate (sadly the pub is closed at the moment but should be open again when you arrive). Sheffield is the home of football.

Sheffield United - If you want to enjoy watching live football while you are here, go to Bramall Lane (it will be walking distance from your accommodation). Go to "The Beer Engine", or "The Cremorne", on London Road, or "The Railway" on Bramall Lane itself, try one one of the hand pulled beers that I mention above, before the game, mix with the fans, listen to the "banter". Watch the game, listen to the fans, listen to the tradition of football fans singing football songs, some that are specific to the club. Get caught up in the atmosphere and passion of Sheffield United. Go for a beer after the game, talk to the fans, you will find they are a friendly bunch.

I would also suggest that you try and take in a game or two at Hallam FC (Sandygate), where just a few hundred fans gather to watch football played with passion and honesty, away from the big money of the professional game.

Most of all, enjoy your time in Sheffield, make the most of it and take some great memories back home with you.

Hello everyone,
Wasn't quite sure where to put this but I was looking to get your help.
I am currently a college student in New York and have been given an opportunity which requires me to live in Sheffield for a year. I love football/soccer (don't hate on the word, it originates from Oxford University) and have been a member of New York Red Bulls since its foundation as well as playing all my life. Anyway, one of the main things I am looking forward to is getting a season ticket at one of the Sheffield clubs, either United or Wednesday, but I am having trouble deciding who to go for. When I was looking into this last year it seemed an obvious decision to choose Wednesday due to the Championship football on offer although that benefit is likely to be equalled as United look set to be promoted.
Why am I here wasting your time on the forum? Basically I want to get the fans opinion to try and persuade me and give me a reason to choose their club. Due to other sports teams I support in the US (red and white colours) and the fact Bramall Lane will be a bit easier to access from where I am staying I have decided to ask you guys first.
I appreciate any advice given though please keep comments constructive, saying things like they are pigs (I know you call each other that) and hillbillies isn't an argument. Match day experience, fan culture, players, history would be preferable.
Thanks
If you want to feel part of the city, the Blades are your team. We are located in the centre, with all that goes with it.

If you want the suburban feel of the area of South Barnsley, Wednesday are your team.

Ok Nykr, here goes.
I too have no connection with the city of Sheffield. I am from Northern Ireland and grew up without ever meeting a blades fan or knowing much about the club. As a teenager in the 80's I became aware of Sheffield united under a manager called Dave Bassett who were making their mark with a brand of all energy, attacking football that allowed them to punch above their weight in terms of finances and resources. I then watched a TVs series about behind the scenes at the club and was immediately hooked. Over the last few decades I have been travelling across about 5 times per season and never fail to be overawed by the lane every time I attend. As someone has already alluded to, the sight when you enter the stadium from the back of the Kop is awe inspiring. The greasy chip butty before the game is arguably the most impressive football anthem on the planet and can have spine tingling reasonance during big games.
This is a football club that is based in a proud, working class city. It is a football club that exudes heritage and tradition in abundance. It is a football club that gets under your skin and draws you in. If you attend a game and emotionally embroil yourself in the experience you will never recover. I have taken numerous friends over the years who support more high profile premiership clubs and they have been instantly impressed. This is a football club where you will run a gauntlet of emotions and keep going back. This is the original United, the oldest professional football stadium on the planet. This is the football club in the centre of the great city of Sheffield.
I was, as you are, an outsider with no affiliation to the blades. I made a fantastic connection that has enriched my life.
Choose carefully but remember - Sheffield is red and white

Am I the only one who thinks this thread is a pisstake?

The cynical side of me says it probably is. Had this appeared a year ago the responses would've been very different. However, such is the mood around here at the moment that we will respond with reduced cynicism, with the attitude of, 'so what if it's a piss-take, who gives a fuck we're top of the league!'

Why is that embarrassing? Love between a man and a beast of the field can be a tender and beautiful thing

Dont get me wrong, I'm a liberal guy. Whatever a man does in their spare time with a horse, a series of pulleys and winches and several pounds of soft cheese is completely up to them.

I used to go in that Starbucks and the atrium behind regularly before, well you know...

To offer practical advice, admittedly having not read the 14 pages of the thread, if you are over here as part of your studies and are registered as a student, I know the Students' Union at UoS had a reciprocal deal with Sheffield United whereby certain match tickets could be purchased from the Union for only £7... and Wednesday tickets a bit dearer. Not been up to the Union for a while so not sure if this is still the case.

Before committing to a season ticket, it may be worth utilising any such offer to ensure you've made the right choice.

O.K my turn.
You are from The UNITED States.
Your flag has RED AND WHITE STRIPES.
That's a connection to start with.

When you do go to The Lane make sure you are not sat behind a pillar on the kop and don't try and purchase anything to eat. (unless you are at the kiosk around 13:45, for a night game)

I know it's not the done thing to quote oneself however, when perusing Twitter this morning I spotted this:

So yes, the Sheffield University Students' Union still do tickets for selected matches.
