United or Wednesday

Hello everyone,
Wasn't quite sure where to put this but I was looking to get your help.
I am currently a college student in New York and have been given an opportunity which requires me to live in Sheffield for a year. I love football/soccer (don't hate on the word, it originates from Oxford University) and have been a member of New York Red Bulls since its foundation as well as playing all my life. Anyway, one of the main things I am looking forward to is getting a season ticket at one of the Sheffield clubs, either United or Wednesday, but I am having trouble deciding who to go for. When I was looking into this last year it seemed an obvious decision to choose Wednesday due to the Championship football on offer although that benefit is likely to be equalled as United look set to be promoted.
Why am I here wasting your time on the forum? Basically I want to get the fans opinion to try and persuade me and give me a reason to choose their club. Due to other sports teams I support in the US (red and white colours) and the fact Bramall Lane will be a bit easier to access from where I am staying I have decided to ask you guys first.
I appreciate any advice given though please keep comments constructive, saying things like they are pigs (I know you call each other that) and hillbillies isn't an argument. Match day experience, fan culture, players, history would be preferable.
Thanks

From your first post on this forum I think I can already see that you are far too decent a person not to become a Blade.
Not too full of yourself, polite, and interested in others opinions.
Just keep reading this site and join in from time to time, there will be a few fall outs and sometimes people spit
their dummies (pacifiers?) out but on the whole it's good fun and you will start to understand our mentality.
Once you've arrived in Sheffield and had a chance to look around, arrange to meet up with some of the fans on here for a few pre match beers and go and experience the unique Bramall Lane match day atmosphere.
I'm fairly certain you'll become hooked, then you can try out the delights of away games as well.
In my opinion you have already found your destiny, don't even bother with the other lot, you will be NYkr Blade.

Hair raising atmosphere at Bramall Lane, or boredom and expense at Hillsborough.

Join us at the worlds oldest professional football stadium for some real football fella.

Just take a punt, got any mates here who are fans? or you going on your own? If United is easier to get to then go United, but if you have mates who are Owls then go with them.
Wait till the season is over, who knows the owls may be going up, but you may be paying Arsneal prices  for a season ticket if that happens.

As the resident Sheffield Wednesday expert I can offer you a great deal of insight to their natural behaviour and mannerisms if it helps.

Eight thousand years before King Robert's Rebellion, the longest winter descended upon the entire world, lasting a whole generation. In the darkness and cold, Sheffield Wednesday fans descended from the Far North, killing all in their path and reanimating the dead as Wednesday fans to fight in their armies.

With help from giants and the Children of the Forest, a great Wall was raised to bar their return, and Sheffield United was founded to guard it and the realms of Men should they ever rise again

While having an overall humanoid appearance, Sheffield Wednesday fans differ greatly from humans. Their grey-white skin is wrinkly but stretched taut across their frames, giving them a somewhat gaunt, sinewy, and mummified appearance. Their most notable trait however is their glowing blue eyes.

Although Sheffield Wednesday faded into obscurity over the centuries, disturbing reports began to reach the realms of man. Despite pleas for support from Sheffield United to the rest of the Seven Kingdoms, a blind eye has been turned to the return of Wednesday, as they remain embroiled in their own civil war. With most not believing that they exist or ever existed, much like Giants and Children of the Forest.

"Pigs gather, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall believe no lies, spout no myths, pretend to be no massive. I shall wear no blue and white, and win no fake attendance records. I shall live and die at the lane. I am the Blade in the darkness. I am the watcher at the lane. I am the shield that guards the realms of Sheffield. I pledge my life and honour to Sheffield United, for this day and all the days to come."

Before you can decide you need to experience "match day" at both, infact while you're at it, take in Rotherham, Chesterfield, Barnsley and Doncaster too, I think you'll be able to choose much easier having taken in a variety of different atmospheres, meeting different sets of fans, watching different styles of football, only you can make the decision, only you know what your looking for and like, you know your answer on here, asking this question will be the blades, it's an obvious answer, as there is a "slight dislike" towards the other lot over in south Barnsley.
The thing with most blades is, we're born blades, it's not a choice or a decision we've made, we are who we are, we are blades, we are red and white, we are united!!!
We haven't decided to support utd cos our mate does, or the bigger boys at school do, it's not cos we want to fit in or look like we know what we're on about even though we don't!
I wouldn't expect you to understand what I'm getting at, you need to experience it for yourself, only you can decide, but remember, you can only choose 1 and you only get that choice once!!!
Get it right pal!!

I wasn't born a Blade, come up as a student in 1982 from the midlands, and decided to check out United in my first week in Sheffield.
One match was all it took and I have been coming back for more for 34 seasons now. Season ticket for most of them, seen the blades all over the place. Absolutely love the club.

You don't need to be a Sheffielder to 'get' United - you just need to love real football, followed with passion by proper supporters. Don't even bother going down the road to the Theatre of Rust - its shit, the football is shit and the fans are shit.

Come to Bramall Lane and watch the mighty Blades. I'll be in NY in July for a few days, if you see a handsome chap in a Blades shirt at the top of the Empire State Building on the 5th then that may well be me. :D

Without reading all the other posts here's what I think mate. If you're the sort who likes to follow the more "established" club that I would say is seen by fans of other club as the bigger of the two (that's my understanding from fans I know of other clubs, not my own view) then Wednesday is probably where you want to go. You'll pay more for the match day and watch football that is very much the continental way, sideways and backwards possession and that's from a Wednesday fan. If on the other hand you prefer the underdog mentality as I do and prefer substance over talk then I would say United is where you want to be. Also we're playing the more exciting football at the minute and are likely to clinch promotion as opposed to playing out the season and really their season will only get exciting if they make the play offs.

Back to the big club thing, its my understanding that fans of other clubs and the media are always impressed with Wednesdays big day out following which they show once or twice a season - I.E the play off final or the play off Semi etc. Generally they get a 25,000 average but they prefer to focus on the one or two games a season they do sell out. In essence that leads to them inflating the view of how big a club they are which is why they call themselves the "Massive" which some Wednesday fans see as a joke to wind us up and others actually believe they are on a par with clubs like Villa, Everton, Chelsea, Newcastle etc. Just recently I heard an ex Wednesday player saying they are as big as Chelsea!

Atmosphere wise, the main difference is they generate much of their atmosphere via their band which is appreciated and despised in equal measure, by Wednesday fans. They tend to currently sing songs about them coming back to the Premier League which as last season, only makes them look rather silly when they don't get promoted, but here in lies a crucial difference between the two sets of fans. Wednesday have a good start to the season and they think they're on the verge of the Premier League. United have a good start to the season and we're more likely to say it won't last! Saying all that I don't think its true that United fans are negative and Wednesday fans positive - just listen to local radio show for proof of how negative Wednesday fans are right now.

As a Blade who wasn't born to it or dragged here by family in some ways I am like you, just from a bit closer. Over the years I have been to many grounds. Lots have an aura about them that make them quite special and could have drawn me to them. Despite this I am Blade and always will be.

I was drawn to United for a number of reasons not least of which were some ex-players but part of it was Bramall Lane with all it's brilliant imperfections. If I can put it US terms I'm a Red Sox baseball fan because once I'd been to Fenway no matter what other parks I went to they all felt like they were pale imitations. I feel the same about BL.

Welcome to the Forum - great opening post!

I'd speak to one of your compatriots if I were you ;)

To answer the original OP...it's a personal choice and it always will be. Not to say that I (and others) won;t hold it against you if you pick the dark side...to be honest we will.

Why pick United as an outsider? Simple really, we welcome anyone and everyone to our ground and our club, with no lies or delusions to try and persuade you. We are an honest, traditional, working-class club, and we are proud of that. We have no airs and graces, and we don't exaggerate our status to try and make friends with other clubs/fans.

We are cheaper to watch than the other lot (important if you're a student), and our ground is close to the city centre, and surrounded by a world-class selection of pubs for pre (and post) - match refreshment. It's also the oldest professional football (soccer for you ;) ) ground in the world, and a piece of history that is worth seeing if you're a genuine fan of the sport.

At the end of the day, you make your own choice. But I'm pretty sure that if you attend one match at each club, you'll make the right choice :)

You've just started a sentence with 'but'. If you're such a pedant that you think there should have been a full stop, when a comma was perfectly adequate, you really shouldn't be starting a sentence with a conjunction.

Good point BushBlade, although you shouldn't really have a capital letter in the middle of your name, should you?

He who lives by the sword, dies by....
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGHHHHHHH

It's a name though so I can spell it how I like. I generally don't care about spelling mistakes and typos, providing the message is clear. When it isn't, I just ignore the post and get on with my life.

They seriously cannot fit another fan into their overflowing massive stadium.
We only accept people who are willing to take their shoes off in the car park.
Have you not considered Manchester University,I hear they have some great clubs to support.

The Sheffield blades play some awesome soccer ball if you want to see head kicks into the score bag, awesome offence a great goaltender and the shut out kings in defence it's the place to be. We get the go ahead goal and just keep putting the soccerball in the scorebag you won't see many games end zip zip

The south Barnsley owls suck dude
He forgot to say we are the winningest team in our conference.

As an American perhaps you should contact Jim Phipps.
I'm sure he would advise you on why you should choose United.

I think you will find we are all leading intelligentsia on here, just try misspelling a word or using txtspk and prepare to witness the fury of the mods

Shouldn't that be a full stop after 'here' and a new sentence? :)

You are all wrong except for I Should Coco. The correct punctuation would have been a semi-colon after the word "here" in NSB's post so that it read "we are all leading intelligentsia on here; just try etc etc."

There is a dreadful dearth of semi-colons on this forum at the best of times and I really don't believe we should be leading our American friends astray by the use of poor grammar. Your homework for this evening is to find examples of proper usage of the semi-colon, and I don't mean for creating winking emogees. I'm sure that your parents will help should you find this task a struggle.

Simple choice, if you cut yourself what colour do you bleed.
