In a nutshell they are a strange delusional set of supporters, who constantly create myths, this is the latest myth:

"If they think their current squad is good enough for mid table then they're in for a nasty surprise. When you look at some of the clubs fighting to stay up at the minute, some with pretty healthy budgets as well, and bigger crowds, more fans, bigger grounds, etc etc.
They've done well this season but will need to make huge changes in the summer.
Survival should be their only target next season"

So lets get this right we are not only in for a nasty surprise and have to make HUGE changes we are competing against teams with bigger crowds, more fans and bigger grounds. Well by my calculation there is probably only 4/5 teams who will get bigger crowds than us next year if we do go up and none of them will be in the bottom 3. But don't let that get in the way of a good story!!!

Perhaps JimPhipps could give an insight... Obviously without any sort of bias whatsoever :)

Only 8 teams in the championship are averaging more than us THIS season so as you say Robbo, they never let the facts get in the way of their beliefs. If we do go up, they may get a bit of a surprise when it comes to attendances next season. Especially if they don't go up!!

Hello everyone,
Wasn't quite sure where to put this but I was looking to get your help.
I am currently a college student in New York and have been given an opportunity which requires me to live in Sheffield for a year. I love football/soccer (don't hate on the word, it originates from Oxford University) and have been a member of New York Red Bulls since its foundation as well as playing all my life. Anyway, one of the main things I am looking forward to is getting a season ticket at one of the Sheffield clubs, either United or Wednesday, but I am having trouble deciding who to go for. When I was looking into this last year it seemed an obvious decision to choose Wednesday due to the Championship football on offer although that benefit is likely to be equalled as United look set to be promoted.
Why am I here wasting your time on the forum? Basically I want to get the fans opinion to try and persuade me and give me a reason to choose their club. Due to other sports teams I support in the US (red and white colours) and the fact Bramall Lane will be a bit easier to access from where I am staying I have decided to ask you guys first.
I appreciate any advice given though please keep comments constructive, saying things like they are pigs (I know you call each other that) and hillbillies isn't an argument. Match day experience, fan culture, players, history would be preferable.
Thanks

You will be welcomed. Sheffield is a great city and I hope you enjoy a successful and enjoyable time here.

Clearly you are a sports fan and want the best from your 'match day experience' Honestly? you would get something from both venues. Realistically, short-lived or otherwise, next season has all the hall marks of being up there with the best we've ever enjoyed so your timing if you decide Bramall Lane over Hillsborough couldn't be better from a potentially 'best match day experience' point of view.

In some ways, it would polarise your choices if Wednesday did go up this season. Positives for going to Hillsborough would include seeing the best that this country has to offer in the way of players and managers every other week. The worst of it is that you wouldn't be experiencing the proper, traditional sport as a whole, but a money-driven industry/play thing that has changed the game from what many ordinary supporters want to see/be involved in. If both are in the same division, the reasons already mentioned in other posts would hopefully have provided you with enough reasons for you to be able to make the choice that's best for you.

Why am I here wasting your time on the forum?
It's not a waste of time at all, you can see that from the number of responses. It's a sensible thing to do and I hope it's been a useful exercise for you.

As a supporter from an early age, I have seen many ups and downs, some exhilarating, some heart-breaking. The one thing that never leaves me though is the love I have for my club and the enthusiasm I have for every game we play. It's great to be with like minded people who you have a connection with, even before you speak a word. Many times, particularly when I didn't have a season ticket and sat next to strangers most games, I'd find myself hugging someone I'd never seen before after we scored.
I truly believe that Bramall lane cannot be bettered for a match day experience. Tuesday night games under the floodlights, whether playing a routine league game or one of those very special nights for example when we played Tottenham in a cup semi-final recently, will remain with you forever.

Fan culture
Honest, working class individuals and families who have a passion for their team.
Appreciative of their team when they give their all, whether they're successful or not.
Although there are a few 'over-enthusiastic' youngsters there is a fantastic unity about the club which gives a true meaning to the club being 'United'
You would be made to feel genuinely welcome and instantly become 'one of us'!

Players
We have some fantastically talented players at the club who give great value for money with some wonderfully entertaining football.
The manager has an eye for what works well and his players give their all for him. Long may it continue.
There is also the promise of further financial investment for the players necessary to make an assault on promotion from the Championship next season.

History.

I've nothing to add to what some great posters have already said, except to reiterate that, not just with SUFC, but with the whole city around the ground, that you have an enormous amount of history and culture that you will do well to cram in in your short twelve months here......assuming you'll ever want to leave ;)

I know it's not the done thing to quote oneself however, when perusing Twitter this morning I spotted this:

So yes, the Sheffield University Students' Union still do tickets for selected matches.

At Hallam Uni and students can buy tickets for any home match during term time for £7. In Westfield Corner. Only have a few hundred so usually you've got to be quick.

Edit - Just seen your first post Linz and it is still the same. :-)

Nay,

its the Wheatley area of Doncaster, you can see the tower of what we used to call the Red church on NetherHall Road and I think St. Mary's behind.

The big white building is the old ICI factory on Wheatley Hall Road and the Power Station is Thorpe Marsh.

They have demolished the ICI works - what a beautiful building that was - perfect for a conversion into flats and the cooling towers were razed about 2 years back.
It must be some easily accessible BBC archive footage because it crops up every now and again when they want to illustrate some 'its grim up North' programme.....

Tell me you're not from Donny Penthouse ;)

Which way did the fella go in the end? Red or Blue?

I want to cut to the chase.

Tbf I wanted to reply to this thread the other day and checked NYKr profile and he's not been on since march.

He probably realised Sheffield also has a decent ice hockey side and plumped for that. Bit more in line with US sports.

Hello again everyone,
It's been a while since I've jumped on this forum and I'd just like to say thanks to everyone who has taken the time to give me info/their opinion on why United should be the team for me. As I think I have said before, I'm not basing my full decision on the forums but I appreciate all the insights that has come my way. You certainly make a very strong case.
Through the uni, over the last couple of months, I have made some connections with people who are also doing my course or are at the uni in gerneral. They were certainly all football fans and after telling them how much I wanted to dive into the culture here, they were very intent on taking me to their ground and showing me the ways. More importantly....they were Blades! I have also made contact with a couple of Wednesday supporters and I did tell both sides that ultimately Premier League football would sway me towards Wednesday. Their loss in the playoffs resulted in a heated but friendly debate from the two sides but I have to say because numerous factors I won't go into and reasons that were very similar to the comments on here, I will become a BLADE next season. I am unsure of timings just yet as to how my arrival will correlate with the start of the season but at this point, I have chosen my team.
May the off season be prosperous for the Blades and I hope to see the team firing when I arrive.

Good choice! :) You won't regret it (well, only sometimes).

Never know what the season will bring, but I can guarantee that with Wilder in charge it won't be boring.

Welcome aboard.
