The views of fans are often based on emotion and not intelligence or facts.

How many times have you read on here “player X is rubbish because he doesn’t run around aimlessly” completely ignoring the fact that the very same player is actually quite good at football.

Why would a professional scout/coach take that on board?
Why shouldn't someone, as one small part of a recruitment team, take some time to listen to what the fans are saying?

You give the example of someone saying Player X isn't good enough because they don't run around. A skilled researcher would be able to take that comment, along with the hundreds/thousands of other forum comments, hours of podcast material, and other fan content, give each data point an appropriate weighting, and come up with a report to share with the decision makers. Roy collects fewer than 50 comments whenever we sign a new player, and I'm struggling to think of a time when even that basic level of searching hasn't given us a decent picture of how the player turned out to be.

I'm not saying sign players on social media responses alone, but at least listen to the alarm bells as part of a wider decision making process.

Why shouldn't someone, as one small part of a recruitment team, take some time to listen to what the fans are saying?
Because you could go to multiple corners of the internet related to the same club, and get vastly different opinions about the same player.

Just as an example, how contrasted were people's thoughts on whether we should re-sign McBurnie or not? How much agreement was there over whether the Osula deal was good business or not?

Plenty of people want us to sign Cooper from Plymouth. Others disagree, and want the lad on loan from Brighton instead, etc.

It's a waste of time listening to a fan base that 99% of the time is not unified in its opinion. Better off to do what a scout is actually supposed to do, and scout the players themselves.

Don't those examples support the value of such a role?

The researcher could produce a report that effectively boils down to: many Sheffield United fans saw value in McBurnie as a striker, but were reticent to offer a new deal because of his poor injury record. This would surely back up what the scouting data say.

How much agreement was there over whether the Osula deal was good business or not?
'Good business' makes the question about money, which is not directly related to how good a player is. However, a Newcastle researcher would have seen that, in general, Sheffield United fans were disappointed to lose Osula. Again, this would support any promising scouting data.

What's that got to do with this question? Our fans haven't seen these players, so they are obviously not worth listening to. However, we definitely should be interested in what the Plymouth fans think of Cooper, because they have watched him play a lot of games for them.

It's a waste of time listening to a fan base that 99% of the time is not unified in its opinion.
No fan base will ever be unified, but that doesn't mean there isn't value in taking a considered approach to listening to what they have to say. Social media sentiment analysis is not a new thing, and it is everywhere in modern business.

Better off to do what a scout is actually supposed to do, and scout the players themselves.
Scouting should obviously form the vast majority of the data behind a transfer decision, but it doesn't have to happen in a vacuum.

Yeah I thought that........

From Peter O'Rourke (very reliable source) saying he's signed a 3 year deal, to absolute radio silence for 48 hrs since. A bit weird.

He is just doing some photo shooting for our new car mat sponsors, currently cleaning a few cars as we speak

Dunno why but feel really excited about this one. Feel like he's the sort wilder could get the best out of. I reckon he could turn out to be a shrewd signing. Hopefully he can find his finishers boots like his dad.

Moore needs someone to play off him and Brewster is not the answer, so it'll be over to Mr Campbell to bother biz.
