One of our u23 lad's.

He's got off to a great start in National League for Barrow. 3 goals, 1 assist in 5 apps.

any of you lot seen him play?

Sounds like he could be a quality young striker at 19yo and one to look out for in future - and if he really does do well - maybe even in Jan when his loan is up.

It’s a big jump from the conference to the championship. I think it would be more sensible to send him out to L1 for the second half of the season if he keeps doing well at Barrow.

You might have to wait a bit, due to Tory cut backs they are only doing emergency really silly duplicate threads.



But don't worry if Corbyn and Abbott get in they have promised another 10 million thread Police paid for by a windfall tax on Money given in birthday cards.

I've seen him play a lot for the U23s over recent years. He is a much improved player. I didn't rate him much in earlier years. But, he's done well & scored a lot of goals at Professional Development League level. He's got a simple game - runs the channels well, looks for the ball, got a bit of pace, can shrug defenders off, and is calm when it comes to the finish. He's not a big, tall, target man type of striker. And.....

He's Miles Off our First Team Squad. Miles Off. He's got a lot of work to do at Barrow & maybe even a loan to a higher league before he gets anywhere near contention. We are an Academy Blocking Club anyway. No Academy player has any chance of making the SUFC First Team in my lifetime. That is because we have become a never contented with our lot club. We are always striving to go upwards to the next level. Or desperately trying to avoid going down a level. To do that we constantly sign player after player after player. Each one we sign goes ahead of an Academy player "in the queue". I was there on 7 March 2015. Dominic Calvert-Lewin had been sub & around the first team. We signed Steven Davies, Dom dropped all the way down to the U18s that day & scored two in S6 in the first 15 minutes. Subsequently, I saw Dom score the winner for England in an U20 World Cup Final. Steven Davies - yeah.....
Look don't misunderstand me. The pathway for young players is - you have to be good enough - no argument from me. No special treatment. But, while ever we're having a crazy turnover of players, Slater, Norrington-Davies, Parkhouse, one day Tyler, they'll all get within sight of the first team. Then, we'll buy someone to push them down the queue. It never gets to "how good are they". It's always "how many in the queue in front of them"

In your opinion, in the last say 20 years has there been a striker who you thought might have made the grade but was blocked from coming through. Either due to us signing a journeyman and/or the player himself losing interest and thinking fuck it. Genuinely interested to hear your thoughts on this as the club have brought a few defenders through but never a forward.

snootyfenooty Of course, that is not only a fair question, but it's a great question. It calls my bluff a bit doesn't it - and correctly so. I'm aware that my blocked in a queue argument is a bit dodgy. It's very easy to list signing after signing after signing - who are really no better than what we've already got. Carruthers, Holmes - they're just the latest. But, it's much harder to make a claim for someone in the queue. I'm shooting at easy targets. I know that. And, I do feel uncomfortable doing that. I just want to be strident in explaining that some Academy players do get close - Slater, Norrington-Davies - but there really is a queue in front.

No striker, who I thought good enough, was blocked. Dominic CL is a good case study though. Essentially, strikers are currency. Get one. Get him young. Get him some games. Some exposure. If the moneybags from the Premier League come calling. He's gone. They can afford to buy him, take a chance, see what happens. Very similar argument I feel for Jordan Slew. I'm usually careful about talking about an Academy Players longer term prospects. Predominantly because I essentially know Fuck All. What I do know is - he's had a blinder today, he's head and shoulders above the rest, he's doing that week in & week out. What he'll be like in two years - I know Fuck All. Danny04 asked me about David Brooks for his Vox Pop piece for The Star. He said summat like - "would he be the best Academy Players you've seen?" No - that's Diego hands down. Week in. Week out. Putting the opponents on their arses. Running 'em ragged. Scoring for fun. Running the show. That's my bag - in the moment. (I never saw any with my own eyes evidence of any "attitude problem" by the way - never).
I'm going all over the place - because it's a good question - and I haven't got an answer. Dom I loved. He got to the fringes of the First Team, so he wasn't really blocked, we blocked him a bit after that. but if Everton come, he goes, blocked or not.
We're not unusual - we don't get many of our own youngsters to the First Team. And, those we do, are often so outstanding, they're off sharpish. Yet ALL our current First Team were Academy Players somewhere.

Yes, I`ve seen him. Looks skilful and a handful for the full back. Got a decent chance of making it if he keeps his head down and works hard.

Brilliant reply, I wasn't trying to catch you out by the way. Very often on forums such as this opinions such as yours tend to get shouted down as you get the stock reply of how can a mere mortal such as a spectator of thousands of games at all levels possibly know as much a an "expert" who has stumbled into a managerial job (and subsequently bombed spectacularly).

Keep up the good work. Even I find it difficult to argue with you!
 
I saw Ian Evatt a few weeks ago and he rates him highly and said he’ll give him a lot of games but thinks he’ll ultimately make a Blades player as Wilder also rates him.

It's "interesting" that throughout 2017-18 at U23 Professional Development League level Tyler Smith was neck & neck with another young player for the Golden Boot - the leading goalscorer. Remember, that is at his level - we are one of 20 teams at Professional Development League level - there are two Divisions of 12 (ie 24 Clubs) above us at Premier League 2 level. I'm not talking about the Golden Boot for all U23s in the country. Anyway - Utd U23s had a great cup run - so played a lot of games. I'm going with - Tyler started 35 U23 games & had 1 sub appearance and ended with 17 League Goals and 5 Cup Goals - 22 Goals. The young lad who was neck & neck made just 26 starts, 2 sub appearances and also ended on 22 Goals.
That other young lad with 22 Goals played for Bolton Wanderers U23. His name was Connor Hall. Yes, that Connor Hall - formerly of Sheffield Utd Academy. We let him go. He was neck & neck with Tyler's Goals last year. He's played in the Bolton First Team in the League Cup this year. It's fine lines ain't it?

A mate of mine knows Pemberton well and you may remember when he was head of our academy. He said unequivocally that Diego was the best 16 year old he had seen anywhere in football. Ever.

Injury aside he never delivered at first team level, under one manager who believed in him and one who didn't. He's been to plenty of other clubs and not delivered there either.

No hatred for the lad but it just exemplifies your point; it's a fine line. A very fine line.

We never brought him through though did we? We jettisoned him before he had a chance to establish himself and left it to Scunny to complete his development.
 
Sounds like a great prospect give him a a full season or half in national league then give him a chance in league one .

If he can bang in 20 a season at 19 in any professional league he will be a talent with a big future
