Matt Philips record holder? Matt Philips scored for Stevenage on Saturday in the game that Billy Sharp scored. Philips is 35 now and it prompted me to look at his record. I remember him coming on a one month loan from Blackpool to United in October 2011. According to Wiki he scored 5 goals in 6 appearances …. Or in the same wiki entry - 6 goals in 6 appearances. I don’t know which is correct - either way it’s bloody good but is it a record goals to appearances record for United? Anyone know?

Here is his United Career. 5 goals in 6 League apps. Plus 1 in 1 in the FA Trophy

He came in on loan with Billy Clarke.
Clarke scored 1 goal and got 4 assists in his 5 games.

I remember being more impressed with Clarke overall than Phillips at the time.

Sure we'd have nailed promotion if we'd been allowed to keep them for the season.

Really poor string of results there!

Draw with pigs, draw with Leyton Orient, draw with Exeter, loss to Stevenage(!) draw with bradford…

We forget how bad things were!

Strange season this, it was actually one of my favorites as a Blade but couldn't have actually ended any worse.

Clarke and Phillips looked a cut above everything in L1 but we were only able to have them for 2 months.

That season looking back we had some real quality in that team for L1. S.Quinn, Maguire, K.McDonald, Williamson, Lowton.
And a Ched Evans in red hot form before being sent to prison. (Would this ever happen to another club?)

Wilson did well that season but we did have some players like above who were really more suited to Championship or even above. We made a mistake that season in not investing in another striker. C.Porter, Cresswell and Beattie were not good enough to replace the loss of C.Evans. Had we had a better striker we might not have slipped out of 2nd.

I don't think I've ever seen a loan player who looked more obviously miles above our level at the time than Matty Phillips. Certainly made an impression on me. It was a crying shame we didn't have him for longer.

True. Andy reid and Greg Halford as well for me - AR at times couldn't hide his disappointment that none of our other players were on the same wavelength!

I’m fairly sure that Clarke went back to his parent club and did his ACL. Both looked very good for us though.
