Tuesday Night is more important. I'd pick the following team today.

Freeman Collins McGahey Wallace

Ryce Reed Hammond Flynn

Adams

Sammon or Calvert-Lewin

Travelling fans would not agree and I'm not sure Adkins has got the "bottle" to be so focused and professional. Wigan have a free weekend.

Speaking to an Ipswich fan yesterday, McCarthy made 11 changes for their game there last September ( lost 3-1).

He'd get absolutely slagged from the vast majority of fans for selecting that team, accused of letting down the travelling fans and face demands for ticket refunds.

A complete non starter.

Can't agree at all. Pick your strongest/best side for every game. We have to get consistency of performance so as few changes as possible for me. I can see the the only change Adkins may make(subject to the other players being fit) would be Baxter for Sammon

I understtand the sentiment and have wondered if the club should rotate the squad and use some of our many many many fringe players .. But .. As the first couple of posts personally think you should be playing either a 100 percent full strength squad or very close
You could look at someone like billy sharp and whilst opinions vary about him he is our leading scorer . You could say rest him for Tuesday in case got injured and was out for the season or some daft logic like that .
Play your best 11 all the time and if shit happens deal with it then .. In my opinion.

It might be different if we weren't playing till next Satdi, but with Tuesday's game I'd go for mainly squad players.

They have had a weeks rest and though they're may be the odd change I doubt we will see too much. Flynny might get a shout at the expense of Sammon I reckon in a 5 man midfield with Coutts moving just inside. Sharpy up top alone. Keep it tight and hit them on the break with our blistering p........

Ok maybe not

Tuesday may be the bigger game. But do we really buy the argument that young, fit, strong, ultra-mollycoddled, fabulously-paid professional athletes can't play two 90 minute games of football in 4 days ?

Tournament tennis players sometimes play 4 hour matches, in blinding heat, on consecutive days. See also professional cyclists. Granted, the demands on the body are different in tennis and cycling, and neither of these are "contact" sports. But then, football isn't really a contact sport these days, either.

What was a bit silly, with all the free weeks between now & the end of the season, was rescheduling the Wigan game 3 days after the trip to Old Trafford. But c'est la vie.

See the reasoning in the O/P but it's an impossibility, for both fans' & players' sake. No chance.

Fair comment but tennis players play on a " level playing field" although some have harder draws than others.

If I was Brayford ,Long ,Basham,Coutts or Sharp ,I would smack Adkins and seriously think of moving on.

1. Let's not be the first team to get absolutely battered by Man Utd this season

2. Tickets cost at least £37

3. 8,500 of us are turning up

4. What would the first choice players like Sharp think of being left out of this game?

I'd go with this...

Long

Brayford Edgar Collins McEveley (yikes!)

Flynn Coutts Hammond Basham JCR

Sharp

Yep. ,agree with that sentiment and very much think that team is the one to put out too.

If it were a less glamorous tie, not on tv, it'd be a goer. See the defeat at Fulham in the league cup.

Setting aside all the mollycoddling, I don't see that this is the point.

On Tuesday both teams will be playing near the limit of their physical capabilities.

Anyone who plays today will likely tire towards the end of the game Tuesday.

Science.

At 9.21am this morning Woodwardfan looked pensively out of his window and thought 'wished I'd got a ticket for today's match.' He kicked the cat but still felt bad.

His disappointment was turning to envy at those who would be attending and so to make him feel better he hatched a cunning plan in order for those who were going wouldn't enjoy themselves.

And so we have a team selection that has no chance of winning and it's all hidden behind an opinion that Tuesday's game is more important.

Don't worry WF these are common human traits. The most important thing is you've been able to talk about it.

33 minutes ago you took the time to post what you did. The most important thing is you've had the chance to talk about what I'm talking about if you get my drift!!

No cat by the way but I have got B.T, Sports and I'll be at Wigan on Tuesday.

Probably first time but I agree with every bit of that post including the team ,however I think he will find a place for Woolford ,if he does in place of Flynn or Jcr I would reluctantly go with that too.

Well, I think it's the point. We have become socialised to a number of things in early C21st pro football: outrageous prices; weekends where only the minority of top flight games kick off at 3pm on a Saturday; absurd hype; two or three new kits every season, four or five if you include goalies; the chicken balti pie; etc, etc.

Another thing we have become socialised to is the idea that professional athletes at the very peak of strength and fitness cannot play more than 90 minutes of football in 4 days.

Oh, and the modes by which we are socialised to accept certain propositions as natural or right are also "science". Or, at least, sociological :)

Right, enough of this bollocks. Off to the game ...

Actually, biology.

I agree with the proposition:

The players will likely tire towards the end of the game on Tuesday. The opposition will tire less and therefore have an advantage.

We are not going to win the cup, however sadly we are not going to catch the top two in the division so that means promotion is off the agenda again so we may as well play our strongest team as there is not much to save them for.

It's not up to the clubs to agree now, the FL says you must play at the first available date after the postponement. This of course suits Wigan more as they had a tv game against Gillingham brought forward.

Each game as it comes ,isn't that the football mantra ? right my lift is here :) UTB

I don't think to many of the fans will be thinking about Tuesday, I would expect after parting with a decent wedge of money they expect the strongest team possible to play today not a watered down version. It still might not be good enough but at least give it your best shot, the fans making the trip deserve that.

How do you think the 1st team regulars would feel about not playing in front of 75,000 fans, they'd really be up for the next away game don't you think.

Might piss 'em off and make 'em want to jump ship January, sounds like a well thought out plan.
