Bert also on the Kop with the Chapeltown Unitedites.

17 year old Cahill was there just before I joined the RAF. Last match before joining was Derby away ( I think)

My last match before joining the RN was the SUFC 2 - 2 Leicester, 'we gotta win this by 9 -0 or else we're relegated'/'fan runs on pitch and decks player' in May 79.

What. a. night.

Was at the top of the kop as usual.......and yes top of the league. It was a Tuesday night after we had done Southampton at home the previous Saturday.

Following that was a 1 nil away at Everton on the Saturday, followed by Arsenal away on the following Tuesday which we also did 1 nil. P4, W4. In those 4 games we had beaten the Champions from the previous 3 season in Leeds, Everton and Arsenal.

We went on to have a record of P10, W8, D2, L0 and then we met Georgie Boy at Old Trafford and he scored the goal that is still to this day repeated on the TV when there are any "clips" of Best shown. It's a game that apparently had a 55K lockout at 2pm with an estimated 20K still outside.

For our fans that were not fortunate to see those games, THAT United team was just outstanding. TC topped the lot and to see that picture of R&W shirts, black shorts and white socks brings back so many great football memories at Bramall Lane.

Great days to be a Blade

I went to the Everton away game and as an 8 year old kid watching THAT team I thought it was always going to be like this - Unfotunately it hasn't been but I wouldn't change a thing - well ..... maybe a couple of things!!

I was on the terrace that night and young enough and daft enough to think that maybe, just maybe, we might be able to do it.

Not a night to be a Leicester fan.......

Big Eddie and TC waiting for one of Alan Woodward’s famous corners. I remember Billy Dearden hitting the bar with a rasping header in the first few minutes of this game. Revie said after the game that Alan Woodward was the finest corner taker in the country. I believe he tried to buy him but he remained faithful to the Blades.

As good a footballer as Giles was, John Harris had no time for him, describing him as a "dirty little player". Strong language from gentleman John.
Yup. Never mind Ken Naughton, "Chopper" Harris, Norman Hunter, Billy Bremner, Dennis Wise, Graeme Souness et al, Johnny Giles was the daddy of `em all.

Thanks for this Silent Blade this was my first ever game birthday treat 2days before my 7th bday. Walked from heeley remember being a little scared walking into the ground surrounded by alll these blokes that seemed massive to little old me but hooked ever since. Still sit with my dad on the loo to this day.

Agreed , but every fan in the country would have loved to have in in their team ( along with Reaney , Madeley , Charlton, Giles , Clarke ......... )

I hated them as much as anybody ( and Don Revie even more so ) but had to accept they were one hell of a side .

They were, but instead of having the odd 'hard man' - 'Chopper Harris' etc. Leeds were an entire team of dirty, cheating cunts. Their success was entirely down to bending the rules to - and beyond - breaking point. Revie was a stain on football and their fans were - and remain - the shit of society.

No artistic licence, this clip from 'The Damned United' summed up that Leeds era to a T.

Even in the 'Charity Shield' match mentioned in this clip (1974), Leeds targetted Keegan and dragged the game into the gutter. Where Leeds belong.
